I bought a different les paul that had been recovered from a flood. Top was split, binding missing in some spots, and neck was coming off. Great checking all over, pups were not damaged, pots were ok so I bought it and worked on it. Its now one of my favorites

Id glue it, and leave it alone.
I was waiting for a back story involving a ship sinking and the guitar being the only thing they had for an oar to paddle the lifeboat to shore! It looks like someone steamed the guitar!

it sounds like a good story.....and that is how Rory Gallaghers music career started off......
I'm gonna be completely honest, I love the vibe of this Les Paul (I'm not even a Gibson kinda guy), I would just reglue the neck so it doesn't fall apart, and remake the missing wing
Fix the seam separations and leave everything else. Cool story for a cool guitar 😊
That first LP definitely spent some time under water for a while. IMO I would be a easy pass at any price for me even as a husk. I have had some flood damaged guitars come across my bench none were worth repairing but I did what I could do just for a few friends. When the wood swells from the moisture and separates then drying out it's usually not just a simple glue and clamp repair. Depending on the grain there could be high and low spots in the separations that won't let it close up well enough to get it back to near original or even passable. Just way too much work to make it worth while repair you would just be into it for too much money. Now as far as the electronics I would replace everything, tuners replace and the truss rod depending on how far the water got into the wood could be one solid bar of rusted metal. Until you open everything up you have no clue what can of worms your getting into. A good bang while shipping could make the gaps open up or snap completely off. I would love to see vids of someone repairing this if anyone does actually buy it.
These make me wonder - what kind of financial deal did the current seller get on these models to do the modifications in the first place? Would a faithful player attempt a modification on his Gibson; not knowing exactly what the results might be?
So what's the mini toggle switch for? That's also on Noel Gallagher's '78 Les Paul gifted to him by Johnny Marr.

@@synboy nice try.
I have a 78’ LP that I bought in 91’ and the neck is actually starting to do this (separate at the wood seems). I haven’t decided what to do about it yet.
Defuniak Springs is on the gulf coast. The town is probably 30 miles north of the gulf of mexico in the Florida pan handle. Plenty of humidity 10 months out of the year.
If I had the extra cash right now, I would definitely buy that first one I would take a chance that the neck isn’t shot. That last one was gorgeous I know lots of people hate the Khayler trem but I am a fan of them. I can’t stand Floyd roses being that this guitar was already hacked up. I would jump all over it.
I own a flamed maple three piece top Standard from 1995. Never seen another one from the 90s.
That guitar would cost more to restore than it could ever possibly be worth, in my opinion.

Yeah, it would be a labor of love to be a keeper.
Nice project. Would love to fix a ‘78. No trem though. Ad says it is stable for over 10 years. Neck will be fine I guess.
I see that the seller is out of Defuniak Springs, FL. They had a series of real bad floods in that area 10 or so years ago, not to mention the occasional hurricane. I was buying a shotgun from a guy there when those floods hit and he got flooded out of his house, moved to another property he had, then he got flooded out of there a few days later, and had to move in with his son. took me almost a month to get my shotgun. Also props to him for laying down the crunchy riffs in the grandpa sweater.
Good luck finding someone to refresh that artist. I had a 77 RD Artist with the original Moog Electronics in it (fully functional). I thought about ripping it alll out and puting new humbuckers in it but couldnt bring myself to do that after looking into what it would cost to take it back to stock if I ever wanted to. After months of calling around, no one would touch the electronics with a 10ft pole. i decided to let it go and eventuall find one thats already modified or try to find a husk to mod.
The headstock looks sus.
i have a 79 Artist i love it but i ripped the Moog stuff out. now are the mini toggles split, split and out of fase
I would repair the separations and keep the top as is. It tells a story and this guitar has gone through something serious. I doesn’t make sense to fully refinish it and make it look like every other non-character Gibsons. This, minus the repairs is perfect now it is.
Yes. Yes they do have to know this history. If a guitar has been damaged that badly you have to tell the buyer.

Volute. Yes, it is.
The listing listed the condition as “fair” 😂
I'd glue the seams, fix the binding, and maybe put a floyd frx on it
Looks like someone took the "boatanker" theme seriously....😂
What a fun episode and I loved what that guitar originally was a lovely P-90 Equipped tobacco sunburst model which I never knew existed! Great detective work Trogly!
It having a new case and being in that condition I can almost guarantee that the guitar was in the case in a flood. Probably fresh water due to the lack of corrosion on most of the metal parts and had the old case thrown out and put into a new case, definitely would need to be examined closely to make sure no warping has happened and if it can be reglued relatively easily.
I always imagine how a 3 piece AAAAA+ flame top would be like. The same as those 5 piece necks
That first guitar is a true relic.
Somebody really did use it for a canoe paddle.
Definitely would be a fun project, if you could get it at playing workhorse level.
What size frets are those?
Carefully glue it up and leave as a playable relic. Looks great. Distinctive
Likely a little more then glue and clamp, most likely the wood has shrunk
The guitar looks like the rest of the background shots of the house haha! Love these "theoreticals" episodes!
There are so many videos about people buying Chinese Gibson fakes and "upgradig" them that I never will buy a second hand Gibson on line. Sooner or later they will enter the second hand market (for instance if the owner dies and relatives sell the guitar as a real Gibson ) That is the main reason I bought a new Gibson Les Paul standard 60's instead of looking for a used Les Paul custom. (what my original plan was)
Some glue and tatoos and a chew..it can live w me😂
Did Trogly just advise someone not to disclose damage to THAT level?

you guys are reading WAY too far into that. You know me, I'm the 100% most honest dealer ever that discloses way more than most. I'm not saying, refinish it and say it is original. I'm saying On a project REFINISHED / REWORKED guitar to an artist spec (IE making a Neil Schon replica or Hetfield Iron Cross), the average buyer for that kind of guitar doesn't care about the past as long as it is "right" now.

It should be free. Firewood would be more valuable
I think you were spot on that it was submerged. That wood is going to be so damp and unstable. I just don't understand collectors sometimes. You could buy a cheap guitar for a couple of hundred dollars and just do that up instead.
Did someone use it as a combination boat oar/weapon??
Could drill and pin those seams with some glue in between
Nashville flood victim?
Thats a flood victim.
It's clear as day that you can't just glue the headstock, it has a bow to it, as you can see the seams are closer together near the headstock veneer vs the serial side, you'd need to steam bend it back and glue it in order to be flat and stable again.
That thing has been under water.... for a while.
Wondering if it was kept in an oven with that level of peeling and serparation then you said water damage...
The stories that that guitar could tell - swimming in overflowed river flood water. I'd hate to see what the original case looked like! Given the shear forces that caused the separation at the headstock, it is not looking good for the rest of the neck concerning straightness. Save the body, pull the fingerboard and headstock veneer to make a restoration. Some creativity will be needed to save the serial #. Electronics are probably toast.
Love that 70’s craftsmanship. No wonder the Japanese builders got their chance.
Saw that few days ago, was gonna buy it till I saw the GIANT splits lol
Insane. I’d have to think about taking it even if it was free
Can’t imagine that thing smells very nice.
That thing looks like it spent half its life underwater 😂
would be fun seeing the Gibson repair quotes for these.
Would love to see you make over a guitar like that.
Neither is a Murphy lab play wear .
Guitar Village usually know their stuff, but in all honesty, they are renowned for being very highly priced. That 1973 is pretty much “Trigger’s Broom” (IYKYK). That ‘replacement’ neck looks an awful lot like a Greco or other MIJ neck.
the relic on that split-seamed LP is fantastic. why would anyone refinish it? what a cool guitar.
Would love to see what you make of Emerald guitars. Made of carbon fibre, they’re beautiful 😍
The heel on the refinished one looks like every Matsumoko guitar I own. I’m not saying it’s not a great guitar though. You could probably get close to what they’re asking, for the same guitar, if it said Ibanez or Greco on the headstock. That’s a real head scratcher for sure…. New top would hide the holes from the original bridge too, because it would have had a harmonica bridge on it originally if it really is a Matsumoko.
It looks cool in that dudes house
You gotta document the Rex Brown Thunderbird Bass
First one, damage looks worse than it is. Might be worth it. Last one too.
It got wet...hurricane survivor?
If you put a Floyd in but keep the finish it’ll look like Scotti Hill’s Les Paul from Skid row, he’s been using it on the reunion tour
If someone gave it to me I could certainly fix it but I would have a hard time putting the effort in any other way.
I'd say a $1000 max for that '78. If even that. But it sure sounded nice and fat.
I dig it but for 450
mmhhhmmm...i think i't leave all those guitars shown well alone....let alone pay ANY sort of money for them
THAT WILL BUFF OUT.
Needs a refret too
And they are so freaking heavy! I have a bad back, neck and shoulders thanks to the Les Paul Pro Deluxe!
It's the new "slash" signature model...
Lot of instruments out there recovered after the nashville flood.
Looks like a Matthew Scott project in the making
I disagree if your gonna refinish it, pull the DiMarzio, make a template from the neck pickup route to put the bridge pickup back to it's original spec.
This guitar was retrieved from Titanic's wreck. True story!
how much water??? for how long???
They cheapened on every aspect of the guitar.... 2 piece bodies, 3 piece tops, 5 piece necks.... i dont get the demand for norlin.
