Great video gents. I too do Tremolo before Reverb and everyone tells me to do after but to me it sounds less abrasive. My signal chain: Gretsch Hollowbody > Boss TR-2 Tremolo > Boss DD-3 Digital Delay set to Slapback > Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb set to Spring > Orange Crush amp on Clean Channel. 🤠🏄🎸

The more I experiment with tremolo, the earlier and earlier it ends up in my chain. I love the sound of tremolo into fuzz! Also a low depth, high speed tremolo into a chorus or flanger sounds very rich and complex.

Loved watching the demo and the Carlo crack up, very infectious guys! I've been sittin so long tweeking my pedal board now I have a bit of Carlo.

What, no Strymon Flint? Admittedly, it's not just a tremolo, but it has great vintage tremo-tones. Aaargh! Mick's guitar speaks Dalek!

Source Audio Vertigo! It's stereo and can handle line level effects loops after your delay ;) it does harmonic, bias, and normal trem and also has an app where you can do tons of custom stuff like leslie sim and presets, etc!

I'm in the middle of Trem shootouts atm. Flint, and SA Vertigo are included, along with many others. The grand scheme is to divide the shoot outs by type, Bias, Optical, and Harmonic trem. I've collected over 40 trems so far, so if you are interested and a tremolo nut, check out and stay tuned to my channel. So it was mentioned the Boss TR-2 offers sine wave, I don't believe that is correct. It is not pictured on the pedal, the triangle wave is pictured, and it morphs to square wave. Good show! Would love to see more on Tremolo.

Just wanted to say I only recently gave tremolo a chance and it's totally started to dominate my sound. It's gorgeous, and can honestly I believe be used in any genre. Just such a great effect.

I know this is an old vid but I love that you talk about your picks, after a year of playing I have tried everything now I am stuck on the jazz 3 XL prime tone, nothing beats it for me no other pick is the same as that. I can get away with the Ultex jazz 3 XL. You guys rock!!!!!!!!! LOL, I'm such a huge fan!

Boss fixed the "Volume drop" in 2006 or so. A new TR2 doesn't have the drop. You can check the serial number online on a used one.

Mick, you should really check the boost trick on the SupaTrem where you use the Soft/Hard switch to get Trem off/Trem on. Just set the Mix to zero and you have a great boost and/or a great tremolo.

Great video guys. I was giddy when I saw this posted today. I broke down and bought a Boss TR-2 earlier this week and it arrives today. Perfect timing!! I'm going to be trying to emulate all of these sounds this weekend!!

Dan and Mick........you guys ROCK. I discovered your channel about 2 months ago, and I cant stop watching. I started playing guitar about 6 years ago ( I'm 54) and pedals always mystified me. Before watching this show I had a Boss ME-70 could never seem to make my own sound, and I surely didn't understand what each effect "really" did. After watching you guys explain the what why and how, I really get it now. I sold the ME-70 and now have 17 individual effects pedals (and ain't done yet) and oh the tones I can make now. Exploring what I can do has transformed my playing.....and enjoying like I couldn't have imagined. I've moved up to my next level of playing. Thanks!! Oh yeah my amp is an Ibanez 2004 TSA15H which I just re-tubed with some vintage NOS pre amp and power tubes, into a 2X12 cab with Celestion Cream Backs, and now I feel like it comes close to your Hamstead! LOL Plus watching you two and seeing the "fun" you have is awesome!! I hope you keep doing this for a long time!! Cheers!!

I love putting anything that boosts level in my effects loop(boosts, overdrives, distortion is out front of course) but eq, comp, preamp etc. They are so great in the loop cause they stay clean. It's my secret weapon for cleans and people always think my amp is just amazing (which it is in my opinion lol, its a marshall DSL100HR an I couldn't be happier with it) but I have my compression in the loop so I get more clean comp from it and it really makes cleans so incredible and clear and full. If the comp is up front it brakes up too quickly especially with higher output pups. And comp in the loop can also simulate tube sag which is great for when you can't really crank your amp but want that natural sag tone. I also use my eq in the loop to do some post preamp tweaking like you'd be able to do on some mesa boogies, and last but certainly not least I just built another diy kit a Zeppelin Design Labs Quaverato Harmonic Tremolo(I build pedals from scratch also on veroboard but the quality and cost of the Quaverato kit was so good that I could match it without spending at least twice as much, Pretty much all of their components tested to within 1% tolerances) . It's an incredibly versatile trem that sounds excellent but I also use it cause it has tons of gain on tap if you want it. It has a volume control on the front of the amp but it also has a variable resistor/trim pot inside that you can use to set the amount of gain with. That way you can get 12 o clock on the volume control to be perceived unity gain. It was such a fun build and I love using it just as a boost as much as a tremolo and harmonic tremolo. You also have internal trim pots to set the high and low frequency levels so you can make the pedal brighter or darker based on preference and if that wasn't enough you also have a dip switch internally for both the high and low signals that sit right after the optocouplers. With the dip switches you can set the high and low pass filters cut off frequencys. With frequencys further apart you get more phasing sounds in the harmonic mode an with the frequencys closer together you get more of the mids/high mids back into the signal. Like I said it's an incredibly versatile tremolo that sounds excellent. If your able to solder and follow directions you can build it yourself for $89 or a little over $100 if you choose to add the midi upgrade which I did even though I only use midi with my DAW lol. Check it out!

I've got an EHX Super Pulsar and it is very cool. It has an amazing feature set, but my favorite thing about it is the envelope controls for depth and rate, based on the amplitude of the signal coming in. So the trem can be set to automatically slow down or speed up or go deeper or shallower as your notes decay (or as you adjust your volume knob). Very musical and awesome.

From the FULLTONE website & the way I personally use the SupaTrem: Cool Trick! Turn the MIX knob full CCW, make sure the HARD/SOFT switch is set to SOFT, and your pedal becomes an amazing Clean Boost device when you turn it on... simply set the VOLUME knob to how ever much kick you want. NOW, if you want to add tremolo, simply step on the HARD/SOFT footswitch and you’ll have a normal sounding sine-wave tremolo.

SwingCordDestroy Yes. This. Some of my venues require using a radial SGI to route to my amp in a doghouse way back stage. I put the supa-trem last in the chain and use this trick to boost the output and compensate for the tone suck.

how is your experience with volume drop using the lovepedal tap tremolo?

Ive been watching your videos for months. Only subscribed now because of the reminder at the start of the video haha

First comment in ages... but relevant because these videos are timeless! I bought myself a Strymon Flint so that I could free up some space on my pedal board (I took out two separate pedals and replaced them with just the one). The Flint is amazing, but damn, I wish the nobs on the front were dual-turn nobs. The volume boost is hidden away as a secondary feature, which requires you to push both pedals down at the same time, which is completely impractical when you need to adjust things quickly to suit a mix. Besides that, it's a wonderful tremolo with 3 tremolo options - harmonic band filtering, power tube bias, and photocell. Maaaan.... it's so good.

*Great idea about a show on pickups. Please include various ways to "make up" the difference between pickups in different guitars live

The section of the show where you guys used the boost of the Fulltone pedal and the MXR overdrive, is a great example of the myriad number of hidden ways a player can discover a great sound and potentially make it their own. Magic stuff.

I know there's been a few comments about topics being repeated, so I thought maybe I could air an idea I had. Maybe it would be cool if instead of focussing on an effect type, maybe one specific effect pedal? Almost like when you had a video on the Strymon Deco(?) way back. Move it around in the chain, try all your guitars through it, combine it with different amps, pedals, effects. Give an in depth study of one pedal and some uses, and in turn allow it to be extended as one tremolo will sound similar to another, for example. Another would be if you bought, say a Fuzz. You could demo the fuzz, review it as it were, and then show off its strengths and weaknesses by moving it around. Try putting delay first, after, really showing the difference. Putting it into two different amps, etc. Then you have both a review, and a question being asked and answered - "how exactly can I use my fuzz?"

Yes! Been waiting for this one! Thanks guys! Tremolo, particularly in an old Fender amp or on a Wurlitzer 200A, is my all-time favorite modulation effect. I crank my Carr Rambler amp to 10 with a touch of spring reverb for my sound and I love the sound of that amp's tube bias tremolo when the power section is cooking. It feels different than the tremolo being before or after the distortion, because the overdrive is happening from the power section which is modulating in bias (or something like that). Not sure about all the technical details around that, but it's such a lovely sound.

Funny that TPS has shown me that I prefer not having a board and running as few pedals as possible. I've been running a vintage Thomas Organ Crybaby, Chicago Iron Octavian Plus, and EP3 Echoplex into a cranked amp with reverb and tremolo. No board, all batteries. Works for me! Happy days!

Totally get the low output pickup thing. My best sounding guitar is my 62 reissue tele, closely followed by my tele part-caster with 6.2 and 6.5 PUs. I look forward to the pick up video.

Another great vid. I always look forward to Fridays. Best channel on youtube for sure! Can I make a request?! I love that you show us your base clean tone, straight into the amps, at the start of each show, but could you perhaps try to show each amp individually and then together when you show us your clean sound? Even if it's just a few seconds! You've done it on some episodes and not on others, and I always find it fascinating to hear each amp, and then together... Not a biggie, but I always find it an interesting moment of the show!

with some great analog circuitry... yeah... you are right... who am I kidding... But it's a great delay right!!

For a couple of dudes obsessed with stereo, I can't believe you didn't consider a good stereo panner, like the old PN-2, the new SD Shape Shifter, or my special Young's Pedals The Looker with tap tempo and volume boost. I use a Nova Repeater, stereo out to The Looker, stereo out to Strymon Blue Sky. I'm planning to get a good stereo chorus for the longest stereo chorus chain I can make!

Great episode fellas... Comment on the Boss TR-2 - Years ago I was getting great sounds with it in the basement then wondered why it never 'worked' in gig scenarios... Apparent or actual, it disappeared in the mix and I stopped using it live. I then discovered Analogman, got it mod'ed and was blown away. It became a fave pedal and this naturally led to a dangerous GAS-path of KOT, BiComp, Chorus,... plus more recently, the Boss GE-7 mod which is also fantastic. TR-2 at end of chain, after delays & just before reverb is where it works best on my rig.

Hey Dan and Mick!! I'm almost sure Joe actually uses the Fulltone Tremulo (based on the Demeter tremulator just like the Mooer) in front of all his amps, since it comes before his switching system. You can barely hear his tremolo until he turns down his guitar and you hear a slight pulse. He keeps the depth at zero and when he wants obvious tremolo he steps on the hard/soft footswitch. He uses mostly as a clean boost to thicken up his tone, as Tremulators were famous for doing so well. I do the same with my boss tremolo in fact with the depth at zero, very decent boost plus saves space on the board, you just need to turn the depth knob down with your foot. This is what Joe wrote on his forum: "I use the supa trem for just that purpose... A little amount of trem in the quiet parts but a good gain boost on the bottom end.. It acts like a fat switch... A very interesting pedal.. Been in the rig for years now.... Joe B"

Now, if we tie in last week's wet/dry/wet episode as a bit of inspiration, stick the Carlsbro in between the two bottle amps with just a hint of trem as the clean sound we could be onto something. Then again, might sound like nails on glass but you never know 'til you try it. Looking forward to the pickup episode too. Just discovered that inside an old 70's Les Paul copy with its weird not proper humbucker pickups is a tone surprisingly reminiscent of Gilmour doing "Any colour you like" from 1974. Tone moves in mysterious ways. Great show as ever. Always good to see Dan laughing so hard he's crying.

+fletches40 I love the old carlsbro amps, was my first amp when I was 10. It can be great to mix an SS amp with a valve amp as well.

Thanks for covering this topic. I think tremolo is my favorite modulation effect. So useful and expressive.

I don't want to be pedantic but... wait, yes. Yes I do. Ring modulation is just very fast tremolo (>20Hz), so that buzzing sound from the tremotron is ring mod. Great show as always.

Great episode, a lot of laughs and daftness to make us smile but also a ton of info as usual! Re - Type of effect, I always thought of tremolo as a gain based effect as opposed to a modulation based effect. Whilst the amplitude is being modulated, the result is a perception of level change of course which to me translates as a gain based effect...the same way an EQ is also a gain based effect/control.

For a brilliant and creative use of tremolo check out Buffalo Springfield's""For What It's Worth". Also check out "Nowadays; Clancy Can't Even Sing" from their first album.

Fantastic selection of pedals here. I love the section on ordering as well. Makes complete sense if you think that originally reverb and tremolo were amp effects. They sound great at the end of the chain. Well explained and demonstrated

ya it is a great pedal but now I'm thinking of the Diamond tremolo. I'm changing my mind like the wind. I like the idea of a tap tempo on a tremolo
