Life too short for long KZread videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we explore some of the basic topics you’ll be thinking about when building your pedalboard… via the medium of Mick's recent pedalboard build. We talk about choosing pedals, layout, physically attaching pedals to the board, signal cabling, power issues… all that fun stuff.
Clearly there are a tremendous number of choices you can make in every price bracket, so we pick up the quest as it relates to Mick’s build, before getting an initial listen to the results. Scroll down for some time guides to the various sections/topics.
Please note that the first half of the video is all talking and doing stuff - no playing. The playing and sound samples happen from around 27:45.
If you'd like to hear more of Mick's board you can hear it here with Mick's Gretsch: • That Pedal Show - Our ...

Mick’s post-video thoughts… 31 March 2017 “I’m writing this after a couple of weeks’ worth of getting used to the board. It may also answer some questions arising, so it might be that you’ve been directed here after asking a question in the comments section. “I’m still a long way from having this all dialled in exactly as I like it, and it’s a learning curve every day. Every rehearsal, gig and messing about session opens up something new. But hand on heart I have never had a set of guitar sounds that have this level of ‘depth’ and ‘integrity’, for want of better words. All that stuff we keep saying about clarity, articulation, definition and so on may not be instantly obvious in the video, but hearing it in the room is amazing… and it’s important to say that it isn’t for everyone! It’s a question of personal preference, taste and experience to date.” Preamps & Drives “The combination of Kingley preamps with regular OD/fuzz pedals offers a level of tweakability for every shade of gain and/or headroom that I could ever want. The flip side of that coin is that there are some ugly sounds in there too, and we stumbled around the edge of some of those in the video. We’ve noticed a issue or two with levels and impedances combining the pedals, preamps and loop returns - you can hear that a bit in the video from time to time. In fact the FX loop return sensitivity is probably the biggest issue of all. The Lone Star and V40 are fussy with their loops it seems, and I’m genuinely not sure why that is; the Two-Rock Studio Pro 35 is the best performer in this regard: literally no issues at all. It might be that the ultimate solution is a stereo / dual mono power amp, but we’ll see how that develops! “We’ve also just acquired a MkI Boogie which I think might be the ultimate wet side of the rig… It never ends!” Delay “The what-delay-pedal issue is ongoing. As good as the Reptile 2 sounds, again there seems to be an issue with the input level/impedance from the preamps, so it’s been swapped out temporarily for a Strymon El Capistan since we shot the video. I like it, but I can never get the wet/dry mix how I like it, so I really want to see if an Echorec works, maybe the new Belle Epoch Deluxe when it arrives!” I’ll add to this as time goes on….

+That Pedal Show. Happy Belated Birthday wishes Mick, from Australia. It's great watching these videos. You learn so much about better ways to do connections etc. as well as seeing the pedals demoed in your usual videos. Pedals were starting to hit the market in a big way (1970s) when I was a kid learning and you just never knew exactly how to connect them up or how they worked with others you may have. It taught me some bad misconceptions too. Now as an oldie, I'm kinda envious younger players can see videos like yours and jump 10 years in experience in one video sitting. But that's great as it also teaches us oldies how to do things properly and get a better sound. For me, it's helped to go back to older settings and re-jig things in a better way. Also keeps my mind open to new emerging pedals and sounds.

hey i have a custom version of the Maiden because i asked Simon to include a boost that actually acts as eq lift, in line with the Dumble amps. Simon used a Juggler enclosure so that the boost can be footswitchable in the same unit. The amazing thing is i used this preamp, and the Page Ods, with the Fryette Power Station. Kingsley preamps with the Power Station used as a power amp sounds amazing. Please try it i think it is a better result in respect to using the return of an amp. This combination sounds amazing at low volumes too! I also have another custom preamp from Kingsley based on Vox TB preamp plus an OD side. Amazing!

Fascinating vid guys but as I am a complete novice with pedals and boards etc, so much of what you discussed went right over my head. What is the 'wet' and 'dry' that you kept referring to? How about a vid about making up your very first board with say, no more than five or six pedals. Great show though guys and please keep doing them.

+Paul Twiselton We are planning a 'basics' series Paul to cover all this and more, but we don't want to call it that because it sounds a bit condescending. Any thoughts?! Wet basically means 'with Reverb and delay (and sometimes modulation)' Dry means without all that stuff. So one amp (wet) carries the reverbs and delays and the other doesn't. Sounds huge! Cheers and thanks for watching!

I wouldn't worry about being condescending. Look how well the "For Dummies" series of books does. I have a shelf full of them for various subjects, my pride be damned! The important thing is I know that the material will be (should be) presented in a way that I can understand and I've learned plenty from them. That said, you should call the series, "Pedals for Plebes".

Dan, you're a genius. I'm amazed by your attention to detail here, even having thought out what would be the best way to stick the velcro/pedalboard-tape to the pedals. Very, very awesome. You guys are great! Thank you for posting this, much appreciated!

Wow... brilliant... There was so much there to absorb, especially in the beginning. Honestly, this episode deserves a second watch. I love the technical and assembly/organizational aspects of this video. I'd love to see more of your velco techniques (the triangle, riser, etc) and would have loved to seen an overhead view of the board in the build room (and yes, I realize how complex it is to make these shows, so I'm NOT complaining); some quick tutorial vids could fix all that! I can't believe the tones I was hearing. I wear decent headphones while I watch the show, and will have to re-watch with even nicer phones. I was awestruck. Well done, mates. You have definitely done it right. Thank you SO much!

Hey guys I just want to say thanks for all the videos you've done to date. Today was a great example of how a proper board should look and sound. You've helped me completely rebuild my 15 year old pedal board from the ground up and redefine my 'sound'.I am getting plaudits from my band mates for this change as well. just need a D&M drive to finish it🙂

Thanks for this, as I'm rebuilding my board at the moment and looking at power solutions to make it as easy as possible. Dan's GigRig stuff looks like it's just THE best you can buy. I've got the G2 and all I can say is that it is just amazing... I can send midi to my AxeFX and midi pedals as well as switch on and off any pedals I want AS WELL AS change any midi presets with one foot switch! Dan is an absolute genius and deserves all your money. Voodoo labs, MXR, blah,blah,blah... don't worry about that garbage... GigRig power is where it should be and where it should stay... and no this is not a paid advert. Cheers and thanks to the guys for being them, and cheers to you for caring about your tone. Much love to Dan and Mick
