That One Time They Turned Metal Gear Into A Turn-Based RPG...

Ойындар

So after the overwhelmingly positive critical reception of Metal Gear: Ghost Babel for the GameBoy, Konami decided it would be a good idea to let the game’s director, Shinta Nojiri, take the helm on a new handheld spinoff for the series. And this was a very exciting time for handheld gaming, with Sony’s new PlayStation Portable being just on the horizon, and thanks to Konami’s strong relationship with the PlayStation brand, this new Metal Gear spinoff would end up being a launch title for the PSP. So the team sat down to decide what this new title would be, and they of course chose the most natural fit for the Metal Gear franchise: a card-based tactical RPG. So, did Metal Gear Acid manage to stick this bold landing, or did they stray too far away from what the Metal Gear franchise is supposed to be? Well, let’s talk about it.
Full Metal Gear Series: • A First Timer's Journe...
Metal Gear Acidメタルギア アシッド (Metaru Gia Ashiddo) is a turn-based collectible card tactical RPG video game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan for the PlayStation Portable. The game was first unveiled at E3 in May 2004, and was released in Japan on December 16, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005, and in Europe on September 1, 2005. It was a launch title for the PSP. A Java ME version for mobile phones was released by Glu Mobile in 2008 titled Metal Gear Acid Mobile.

Even by Metal Gear standards, the plot of Metal Gear Acid is completely batshit. It's like the writer looked at the number of twists in Kojima's stories and said to themselves "you haven't seen anything yet!"

My brother once told me the exact same thing. He had played Acid 2 first, and when he tried to go back and play 1, he was immediately repulsed by the lack of certain quality of life changes that he said made the gameplay experience of 2 much smoother and less frustrating. I never got around to playing 2, so I'm curious to see how far that statement goes in the next video.

Acid 1, visually, felt more MGS than Acid 2. But Acid 2 did 95% things better from mechical additions, balance, or just straight up new content/changes. It honestly blows Acid 1 away, and I say this as someone who refused to play Acid 2 for years for its cheesy art style alone... Until I finally gave it its worthwhile shot. And It absolutely earned a sorely needed apology from me after I realized what I was missing out on. @@notcole

I felt like this game was made for the fans who got into MGS1 or prior because the way the special cards were presented with short cut scenes from the source game kinda adds nostalgia to the Nintendo MG series and add more lore to those who got into it during the PS era. I fell into the latter and even though it wasn’t canon it was a game that gave me more understanding of the Metal Gear Universe.

This was my very first game on the PSP. I remember grinding the first two missions, getting myself as accustomed to the VERY strange game as much as I possibly could, before I just plowed on through the surprisingly difficult campaign. (and spamming Running Man's card whenever I could, since that particular card was busted and I was VERY lucky to draw that one). The story was also bonkers. More bonkers than any Metal Gear game up to that point, and the prior two mainline entries featured a romanian "vampire", a bullet repelling witch, an entomancer that could make bee granades, and a literal ghost.

I've heard of this game but didn't give it any attention. I didn't know it had this kind of a story to it. It's very interesting and I think I know why it's called Acid, given the way hallucinogens' are used to mess with Snakes mind. Kind of like how the drug Acid is like. Since this game takes place in a different continuity, I want to say this takes place after Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. Mainly as from what i saw Roger visited Snake at his home, which looked to be in Alaska. And in Metal Gear Solid we can watch briefing tapes where Snake talks about being a dog musher in Alaska, plus a part where he cuts his hair. Yet from what I can see it's long. So in a way this is a Alternate continuity where the Shadow Moses incident never happened (AKA Metal Gear Solid)

@@notcole Yes that’s what it’s used for. It creates a checkpoint during a level before kicking you back to the title screen. Now at the title screen you select continue instead of load to go to the checkpoint. The checkpoint is never erased unless you overwrite it with another checkpoint save during a level. So if you die or quit out of a level you’ll still be able to load it. This is really handy if you want to try doing something risky in a level. Also during boss fights the game won’t let you save. Probably to make it harder to cheese the fights.

the cool thing abt MGS Ac!d is that at the time when it released a lot of people didn't really know what this game was trying to be. a lot of players were taken aback by how unorthodox of a MGS entry it was. card game players might've not been interested in MGS at all. and MGS fans might not been into TGC games at all. *however* this perspective is mostly a westerns view. collectible trading card games are MASSIVE in Japan. if it's an intellectual property it likely has some sort of TCG attached to it. so from my understanding this game while not the biggest seller in the east either was received a lot beter where both fans recognized the fun handheld spin-off full of fanservice and regular player saw just a fun bite-sized MGS spin-off on the PSP. in retrospect it's commendable how the AC!D series has remained untouched by the wave of F2P monetized card games that have blown up in the years afterwards. it's almost weird that Konami of all companies didn't monetize the living daylight out of AC!D spin-offs on mobile phones. for what it's worth that at least has me happy that AC!D wasn't the biggest seller out there. we still have our fun unorthodox MGS card-game without it being soured with how Konami tends to handle properties in recent times. as always great video mate 🙏 there's a few entries coming up that I'm curious to what you'll think of them

I always loved the ACID games, and was disappointed that there weren't many more games like them that I could find. The one I do know and have played a good amount is Warhammer 40k: Space Wolf, but it's not as good as even ACID 1, which it is much closer to than ACID 2. Additionally, it's not a stealth game, so a lot of battles devolve into "play card with bigger damage numbers and hope for the best," with just spending so much time killing waves of enemies. At this point, I kinda hope that the MGS Master Collection Volume 2 has the ACID games on it along with MGS4 and Peace Walker. I mean, the first one had Snake's Revenge of all things, so ACID has at least a snowball's chance of showing up.

All I know about MGS AC!D is it's a non-canon card game. It lost my interest at "card game". For all I ever knew, it was a really good game, but I have zero interest in "Metal Gear Solid, but it's a card game".

@@SnakebitSTI It sure would be great to have publishers release original concepts as their own thing and not strapped to an existing license. Especially because once portable ops was out, AC!D felt like an even harder sell to me.

@@Rubafix989 Yep. But publishers know slapping well known names on stuff helps it sell. And sometimes developers genuinely have wild and crazy ideas for where they want to take an existing concept.

it's kinda confusing when you talk about things like "Codecs" in these videos XD like you seem to use the term Codec and Radio interchangably, which...is not how it is. When you say "take the Codec from someone" I end up thinking "...what? How'd he-...did he rip it out of the guy's ear?"

@@notcole lol that is very odd XD the Codec itself was invented by Mei Ling who isn't even a part of things in this timeline. I can only assume it must be like a different version of the Codec then since the normal Codec starts off in Solid 1 as an implant.

Dude the reason why you and many others couldn't understand the story is because all y'all played the game wrong... And I already know what some of you are thinking "How do you play Metal Gear Acid wrong?" Well, I'm gonna answer your question with a question which is the answer by asking you this: 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 Have you tried being on "ACiD" while playing Metal Gear Acid? If the answer is NO then that proves you played the game wrong.😊
