Christina was probably shaking her head after the messenger left and saying to her maids "I dont know what King Henry's been smoking but I sure as hell would like some"🤣

    Actually it was about to happen regardless of what Christina thought. The initial plan to marry her to Henry came from her uncle Emperor Charles V. to secure am alliance against France and Christina would've had to obey her uncle. The marriage was called off when Charles made peace with France and marrying Christina to the Duke of Lorraine provided him with a better alliance. Instead Henry chose to marry into a family that was an enemy of the Emperor: He chose Anne of Cleves whose brother Duke William the Rich was at the time defying the Emperor over the posession of the Duchy of Guelders.

    Christina of Milan (she was Danish, but was the widow of the Duke of Milan) never said this, but she did say that she found it hard not to start laughing at the proposal. She was more polite in her "f**k no" answer. Throughout Europe, everyone knew who Henry was and yes, they also saw him at the time as a wife-killing psychotic tyrant. Even though the ambassadors at Henry's court had to be polite, in their correspondence they describe Henry as a monster. Chapuys, the Imperial ambassador, who hated Anne Boleyn felt bad for her, remarking that he never saw a guy who had been allegedly cheated on be so happy. Chapuys didn't believe Anne was guilty of the charges. The French ambassador (Marillac, I think) around the same time as this scene is supposed to take place, told Henry who wanted to meet a whole bunch of French noble ladies at an event to pick his next wife, something along the lines: "Wouldn't you also want to just f**k all of them and pick the one you want to keep, while you're at it?"

    Good on her for rejecting Henry. He blamed everyone but himself for everything wrong that's happened in his marriages. He divorced his first wife in favour of his mistress & lack of a male heir, had his second queen beheaded on false charges because she only gave him a daughter, his third wife died shortly after childbirth, divorced his fourth wife for being "too ugly and looking "like a horse", beheaded his fifth wife because she cheated on him because he was a fat, sickly man that couldn't satisfy his husbandly duties in bed and, almost executed his last wife due to an argument about religion.

    Ok... Some context... This line of "I would gladly marry Henry VIII if I only had but two heads." Was said by the princess of Denmark as she was getting her portrait painted for him to preview (before the engagement) and the Emperor is referencing the fact that the Holy Roman Emperor was Charles V, the cousin to the first wife Catherine of Aragon. Who also screwed Henry over on a lot of international deals (taking over France without Henry, refusing to marry his daughter Mary despite having a betrothal contract... Basically her cousin screwed her out of a marriage). Also in case anyone's wondering, the order goes ... Divorced, beheaded, died Divorced, beheaded, survived. Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour. Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard (Anne's younger cousin I believe), and Catherine Parr.

    Christina had very little say in who she could marry. She was of royal blood, but her father lost his throne, so her marriage prospects relied on the needs of the Holy Roman Emperor, her cousin Emperor Charles V, not her own heart. It was however the done thing then for a woman to use feminine terms when talking about such things, even if a dynastic match was proposed.

  • @laurendearnley9595

  • @peadar-o

    @peadar-o

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@laurendearnley9595 From his foreign policy (dynastic manipulation), Charles was not keen on having favourable matches for his enemies unless they suited him and his family. I think he knew that England was already lost to Protestantism while both Henry and Edward were alive, so did very little to help Mary, and would therefore not have supported a match between Henry and Christina, because any children from that marriage would have been raised Protestant (or at least Henry’s version of Protestantism) and it would have caused a division in Habsburg family between Mary and her supporters and between Christina’s (and her children from the match) supporters. Mary’s status was still as precarious as Elizabeth’s as the marriage between Catherine of Aragon and Henry had been declared invalid. The one thing that Charles could not live with was division in his own family because that would cause the fall of his house. Initially Habsburg marriages were to gain territory, but later Habsburg marriages were between cousins, and uncles and nieces to retain territories (because dowries often consisted of lands as well). The odd thing is that this chronic interbreeding caused the fall of Habsburg in Spain anyway and caused the Habsburg of Austria-Hungary to continue through the female line thanks to Maria-Theresa (mother of Marie-Antoinette).

And during the Blackfriars trial when Henry was trying to get his marriage to K of A annulled, one brave soul yelled out "Back to your wife!" at Henry when he was riding by.
