It's mindblowing to me how we as black woman find a million excuses to relax our hair. Maintaining a house is difficult as well, are you gonna move now?? We spent time getting our nails done, toes done, getting waxed, caking up our faces with no hesitation. We have no problem spending hours watching shows like Love and Hiphop, catching up on what celeberties are doing with their lives. But natural hair takes too much time and is hard to maintain? Come on..

Girls will spend 2 hours doing their cut crease but complain that black hair is hard to mantain. No its not, you’re just lazy. At the end of the day if its so difficult to have your hair out, you can put your hair in braids or dreads or weaves or wigs. There are so many protective styles that can temporarily change your hair and can help make it more manageable. Relaxer is more or less permanent, I agree with the notion that relaxing your hair is the same as bleaching. It’s chemically stripping your hair from its natural form, you’re sitting at the salon with your scalp burning just for ‘maintenance’. It doesnt make sense. KZread is such a good platform for learning and sharing ideas, can you not find a KZread video teaching you about easier maintenance of your type of natural hair? Anyway, this was such an evocative video, really enjoyed the debates😁.

The girl in the “woman” hoodie was PREACHING! That’s why I personally do not advocate the wearing of straight/blonde weaves and relaxed hair. I feel like we have a duty as black people to put our natural beauty on a pedestal cos clearly no one else does. I truly believe not enough black women are honest about how they feel about their hair. I’ve never relaxed my hair, but I straightened it and ruined the curl pattern, so I locd my hair and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever done. If you truly love your hair, you’ll find other ways to manage it.

I 100% agree with zoey on this one. Some people relax their hair because of maintenance and because they hate their natural hair texture. HOWEVER, many people wear wigs for the exact same thing: because of maintenance OR because they hate their natural hair and will never show it. If being pro-black is wearing your hair in it's natural state, you can't necessarily cover it with wigs all the time. I believe being pro-black isn't always to do with how you wear your hair. It's about accepting who your are and being happy within.

Yes pro black is not a look but then don't complain when you see tv hosts, CEO's and actresses who look white washed. Pro black does not exist in a vacuume. yes you have a ceo who is helping the black community. But when a little girl sees her she's still observes that her hair is not good enough even for a ceo. As a group of people if we can't collectively agree to throw that stuff away and respect ourselves then we will just go round in circles. Lastly miss me with the it's hard to maintain (and then be rocking a frontal) well kept relaxed hair is hard to maintain. I won't have my children born thinking there is something wrong with their hair because they watch me damage mine.

I agree with Beverly in the sense that black hair (mainly type 4 hair) is not the standard of beauty in society. Many of us are shamed and ostracised because of the natural hair that grows from our head. Therefore we do have an obligation as a community to promote and celebrate our hair to combat the underlying self hatred. However with that being said how a woman chooses to style their hair should not be an issue, ideally. But, because of the society that we live in, it has forced us to politicised our hair texture

The conversation discussed pro black as a form promoting and elevating blackness (not supporting), this includes aesthetics. It means if you are wearing any form of straight hair and your natural hair is not naturally straight then you are not promoting your authentic self and are not visually an advocate for pro blackness. There are amazing pro black female role models such as maya angelou, Oprah, Nina Simone etc who didn’t always wear their hair naturally but they are from a different time. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said that if Michelle Obama had wore her hair naturally, Barack would not have won the US presidency, Wether you like it or not your hair is a political statement and we have these discussions because of what we want to see now and for our future generations.

forever young Do you not understand that black girls are bullied everyday by both white people and their own for being ‘bald headed bitches’ or ‘nappy headed’ when they do attempt to wear natural hair? It’s never happened to me because fortunately I’ve always had longer hair however for girls who were forced to relax their hair at young ages and now have broken unhealthy hair - why would anyone want to deal with that all the time? It’s not for anyone but a black woman to talk about what we decide to put in our hair/do to it when we are told everyday in society we are not good enough regardless if we try to embrace our hair or not. You sound ignorant and I highly doubt you are west African the way you are worried about all these other cultures🙄... next.

forever young Who said that? But everyone has coping mechanisms and again you wouldn’t know how it feels having to deal with your identity being questioned and shunned everyday no matter what you do. Therefore, if a woman decides that she wants to wear extensions or wigs (the same way every other race of women does) then it is her decision. And again at this moment in time I am wearing my natural hair and have been for a long time but I don’t judge any other girl who decides she wants to try new hairstyles other than her natural hair/natural texture. Especially when you have just proved that when black women wear extensions that emulate their own texture you have mocked them because it has not grown from their scalp as if we don’t know white girls have been wearing clip ins and extensions from day. Clearly you just have an issue with black women doing it so you should probably look into where that comes from. And lastly we all know the race is doomed when black men decide to throw their own women under the bus instead of listening to the video and at least trying to understand the black woman’s struggle that stem from a place similar to their own😂 Bye

forever young Loool. A big lie, first of all you can’t fish fake statistics out of your ass to try to sound intelligent. Secondly, I doubt you are a black women because there is no way a black women would not know about the prejudice and institutionalised racism that means that even young children who wear their natural hair/dreads or braids in schools have been threatened with expulsion or isolation. Black women who wear their natural hair or braids in the work place have been told it looks ‘unkempt’ or ‘unprofessional’ and have been told to straighten it or get weave and even to apply for a job the chances of them taking you on if you come with an Afro or braids is highly unlikely when society has put whiteness as the standard and everything else is a trend (which we have seen with white girls appropriating braids/faux dreads after the number of years that black women were - and still are mocked for it). Not everyone wants to wear weave😂 Some people have to in order to get ahead in life which is not our fault, you’ve completely ignored the fact that racism exists and when we’re at the bottom of the totem pole to excel sometimes sacrifices have to be made. Even the micro aggressions when black girls with long Afro hair have to deal with looks or random people touching their hair like we are pets ‘how do you get it like that?’, ‘Can I touch it?’, ‘It’s just so wild and crazy!... blah blah blah’. Not everyone has the patience to deal that everyday. So whether I do or do not have an argument is not up for debate but arguing with a troll is a waste of time because you clearly don’t want to accept reality or educate yourself - so it is what it is.😂 Have a good one.

The main problem with relaxers is how harmful it is to the body. The Science Journal of Epidemiology published an article showing a correlation between the use of relaxers and the increased number of uterine fibroids. The other thing that sis with the WOMAN hoodie was tryna get them to realize is that anti-blackness is so conditioned in our society, we brush things like this off when brought to our attention. Another thing is that there has been LEGISLATION-at least here in the states; idk about across the pond-passed for YEARS to control how black women can wear their hair. Annnd it was implicitly discriminatory against natural black textures. Thus why natural hair is still so political. Naturally curly, kinky, wavy, coily, many-textured hair, is very delicate. It is very sensitive to abarasions from washing our hair, detangling, heat application, or even just rubbing fingers thru our curls. Relaxers are one of the things that is most abrasive and harmful to us.

Oh and while there are many black people with naturally straight hair in Africa, anti blackness isnt oppressing that texture. It is oppressing the west and southern African hair texture. MOst of the diaspora comes from west africa where the hair texture is most naturally type 4. And the oppression of blackness has largely been based on the oppression of people with west african phenotypes. So while some african peoples do have naturally straight type one hair, most of the time when we talk about black hair not being presentable we are not talking about the hair type that white people have also which is typically type one and two. That hair texture isn't oppressed and isnt the typical hair texture of black people

Not to mention the example of melanesians people with blonde hair aka 0,1% of black people.

Please, if you want to sit here and talk about being anti black then why haven’t you done this video without your wig on? Saying that some black people have straight hair and using that to justify straight wigs despite all that you have said smacks of hypocrisy.

@25:46 she took it too far...Beverly, No Sis! Especially when the entire room isn't wearing their natural hair. Correct me if I'm wrong, you can wear a "protective" styles rather often, as an excuse for not wearing your natural hair as much. Does that mean you are not pro-black? No! My point is a lot of black girls are wearing wigs in place of their natural hai more often than they even wear their natural hair. In different textures and styles and nothing is wrong with that. You can't argue your point so passionately and fanatically yet condemning relaxed girls, when you're wearing a wig in most of your actual appearances under the disguise of it being a "protective" style. Rock your natural hair before you come for relaxed girls. Too FAR! from a relaxed girl.

yeah i don't know how a girl can say her natural hair doesn't suit her style... or that natural hair is a 'look' its actually mad that we think like that but I'm glad they all agreed its man. i guess we been one way for so long its hard to change. For me i used to relax and wig it and never ever have my hair out but now... being natural is my look. i feel odd in a wig :/ like I'm almost really nervous to wear it but i do cause of shrinkage and gym. I'm just glad i was able to change my mindset and not attach myself too much to wigs and braids cause my fro is my look/style anything else is just temporary add ons. Theres a lot of 'natural' girls... we only see their hair in their 5 second IG story... so they can say yh my hair is long... but i protective style it.. okay sis.... a wig 12 months a year is not a protective style its just a style and thats okay but lets not lie to each other about 'protective'

i love what you said Breeny Lee, "pro black is a mindset not a look".... personally i think i am for black people all round, but i know im not going to limit my believe in people to my hair, if i cut my hair bald, have i stripped myuself of my blackness?! theres a song by morgan heritage that says "you dont have to have dreads to be rasta" because for the rasta man the dreads is merely a representation of their believes, just like how a married person can wear a ring and still not be faithful to their marriages but a person could be married and choose to not wear ring but be more committed and faithful to their marriages. its about your actions not your look or a symbol or representation. personally i prefare to keep my hair natural because it obviously grows better in quality but it is also immensely difficult to maintain it and maintain the quality. i end up having to relaxing or cutting it off just so i look and feel "decent"... i think we underestimate the ability and skill that goes into caring for textured hair and how ones texture influences that. because fact is just like any other hair type Caucasian or not, if hair is not taken care of it will look horrible.

Loved this discussion ladies and I agree with Beverley 100%. I honestly think the root of the issue is the struggle with vanity in our community. That's why we come up with so many excuses why we can't wear our natural hair, or if we are natural it sees the light of day a few times a year. If we want outsiders to accept our hair, we need to visibly accept it FIRST.

I think what she was getting at is that you can not be “Pro-Black” and still relax your hair because that is your natural hair. You are chemically altering it. Now, with that being said, you can still be “Pro-black” with weave. We all know that weave is apart of protective styling. What everyone is failing to realize is that there are multiple ways that you can “maintain” your hair without the need of chemically altering it. #BOOM #ALLFACTS 👁🔮🤟🏾✨

  • @bebrzzy
    @bebrzzy6 жыл бұрын

Wigs are used to protect hair and is temporary. With relaxers, you have to chemically damage your hair for what? I agree with what Bev said as maintenance is not an actual reason. People might do it because they were raised to and do not recognize the real reason but this is all about appearance and assimilating with whiteness.

It’s true black hair is a political statement not only during slavery but after it was assimilation for those who wanted to work in the inner city areas were likely to be accepted. Those black women that were light skin and relaxed their hair were seen as white as the texture and skin were closer to those that were white. Relaxing your hair is assimilation into a society to want to be accepted to have a living.

Sharufa yuma Black hair was a political statement even before white people landed on the African continent. It was used to relay what tribe a woman came from and what her rank was within that particular society. If someone was mourning the death of a loved one they cut all their hair off. I think part of the identity crisis found within black women has a lot to do with the fact that we have lost touch with such an integral part of who we are.

THOROUGHLY enjoyed this discussion, if you think about it we've been conditioned that our hair is not pretty by not just the media but literally everyone in our lives, from classmates to family. I remember sitting behind girls in class with their silky ponytails and messy buns and wishing I could do that. If I had grown up around children with natural hair, i wonder how my perspective would have changed. When I have an interview, meeting, project, even date..I slick my hair down or wear a wig. I have type 4 hair and I've been natural for about 3 years, to this DAY my mom still asks me if I'm sure I don't want to relax it lol. A personal goal for me is to just wash and dry my hair and literally wear it exactly how the curls want to pop out of my head.. with the amount of shrinkage I have and how round my head is, trust me, it's a challenge. Thanks for the video!
