Built between 1952 and 1958, the 501 (and later, bigger engined V8-powered 502) were the first BMWs to be sold following the end of World War Two. Nicknamed Barockengel (or ‘Baroque Angels’ in English) it was offered as a saloon, cabriolet and a coupe, albeit the latter two being built to special order by Baur. The cars were wonderfully luxurious no matter which body style the customer chose, but they were very much built for comfort rather than speed: the 501/502 weighed a whopping 1,430kgs dry, which adversely affected performance; still, it steamrollered bumps and lumps smooth, which was probably more of a consideration in post-war Europe. It was also a very safe car for the period, having above-average side-impact protection thanks to its robust (and extremely heavy) chassis. An especially short steering column protected the driver’s chest in a frontal collision too, and the rear-mounted fuel tank was carefully positioned to ensure it was as safe as possible in the event of a rear impact. The 100bhp V8-engined example is far more luxuriously appointed than its smaller-engined sibling. More expensive too, which goes some way to explaining why it is thought that fewer than one hundred right-hand-drive examples were ever built. A survivor in any condition is not easy to find, one in this condition, however, is virtually unicorn territory….

The car Freddie saw was actually a BMW 3.2, a post 1955 development for the 2.6 litre 502. These luxurious cars were the only range BMW produced and nearly resulted in bankrupting the company because of the limited market. BMW was saved by the Suez crisis which encouraged them to built the Isetta bubble-car under licence and so bring a popular model to their range.

Hi Freddie and Monika! This is a lovely video you've done here about my town! In my opinion La Laguna is the best little city to be born and grow up in, just because of the quality of life, the people and the fact that pretty much everything we need is here! You must search for the little good places in the city, there are so many! I suggest you go and try "Crêperie Les Îles", is a crêpe cafeteria in La Concepción, but if you get lost just ask anybody where "La Bohême" is (which was the original name of the place). Also, go and try arepas at Punto Criollo if you haven't, they're amazing! Lovely video, I enjoy seeing my town through your perspective, keep up the good work! 😄

I love how excited you get when seeing old cars in Spain, because I get just as excited. The thing is Spaniards keep their cars forever. My mom still drives a 1990 Mercedes 230D, and I drive a 2001 BMW 531 TD. I get so happy every time I see a Seat Panda or a 1979 Benz 300D which was my first car.

I was thinking about to go for a tour riding around the North of Tenerife after the sunset to see the chrismas light an decorations, there are a beautiful Belen in Los Realejos where the library is, as well as light decorations. There are also anothers towns where the chrismas decorations are pretty beautiful like Puerto De La Cruz, Garachico wich is specially beautiful with the castle and streets decorate and a Belen on the main scuare

I love La Laguna, would recommend Makika, its a little café where they have some good cakes and on wednesdays they do a special croissant (they change it every week), it's not that cheap but I really like the place and the food and the people working there is so lovely. Keep working on that spanish, you're doing great.

I bought some turrón to take home and a splendid almond biscuit from that stall in front of the cathedral the week before last. We were out on our Tenerife field trip and usually go in early December - always try to take our students to la Laguna for the atmosphere you capture.

Freddie, I think you are an excellent presenter with some great ideas. As a result of watching your Tenerife series I've taken my wife to El Cordero and Casa del Drago. She was highly impressed with both! Can I suggest you explore some of the hiking trails on the island? To me it's a good 50% of what Tenerife has to offer, but little known to British visitors. A good start might be the waymarked route from San Miguel (other side of motorwary to El Medano) The route starts from the "El Capitain" house museum taking in the traditional roof tile furnaces, an abandoned village, historic water source (meeting point) and a very attractive Barranco, with continuous views down towards the sea. - Its what's known as a "Balcony Walk" although here are some ups and downs. I'd really like to see your take on some of the walks - They are truly stunning.

Keep up with the Spanish you are doing well. I worked in Tenerife during the 90’s as a chef and you learn very quickly when trying to order food and supplies over the phone, I ended up joining a Spanish class for lessons which accelerates the learning process immensely. Also down load a phonetic copy of the Spanish alphabet which speaks how the letters etc are pronounced, (wish we had the internet in the 90’s) and practice spelling out words phonetically whenever you can eg, sat on loo, recite each letter of day shampoo or deodorant, whatever is near you and your pronunciations of Spanish words will improve 10 fold when you know how to pronounce the specific letters eg J = Hota! and the double letters ll = ell-yay so instead of saying “A-day-hay

Hello you 2, Firstly great video of La Gomera and Merry Christmas. The monkey bike is a Honda Dak which is the male version of the Honda Chaly, hence the cross bay which is absent on the Chaly (female). Your tour of La Gomera was excellent and up to Monica’s normal high standard. You must do lots of research on Google where else would you find all the information. The La Laguna night life and shopping very Christmases and what an excellent little hidden away restrooms, bar. I am afraid I cannot help you with the BMW but what a lovely looking cat. Take care

In UK it would be locked away in an alarmed lockup with armed guards 😂 there it was meh! Chuck it in the underground, no probs. Sorry, had to laugh when you said, “I’ll get Monika to film my reaction to this Canadian cheesecake” chokes/splutter! Hmmm that good eh😂😂😂

A tip for English speakers learning Spanish is to keep the vowels short. Well done for making the effort!

Freddie & Monika you guys will need a holiday soon lol ... you will get burnt out & need to recharge your batteries .. I should know as I was once a stock broker working in Luke street city for Charles Stanly Stockbrokers in London back in the day , only lasted 9 months and partied like crazy and a bit of booze , maybe a bit more .. I got exhausted / burnt out or maybe just more play than work back then ... was stressful , yet can't remember some of it lol .. have a superb xmas & don't get beaten up ... brick lane market was cool & wet end .. now impossible to park

Great video chaps, looking forward to the Barcelona content. I don’t know the city much (apart from the usual touristy attractions) but last time I was there I came across a small coffee shop called Morrow Coffee, right next to Spanish Square. Had a coffee and avo toast, was really good. Also visited Sitges, really lovely small beach town 30 minutes away from Barcelona. Have a good trip!
