The story behind this song: The overall message of the song is to give hope to everyone who has suffered loss and grief through the pandemic. The religius elements came about after Midori (blonde guitarist) visited to the United States for an appearance at NAMM. While she was here, she was invited to see some Southern Gospel churches, and she was impressed with their passion, so she wanted to write a song that was a tribute to that experience. Vocalist Asami, in keeping with Midori's desire to make a song that captured some elements of gospel music, threw some gospel tropes into the lyrics (she was also an R&B, Soul and Gospel singer before joining Lovebites). And it was filmed around Christmas time, so they decided to incorporate the Jesus figure in the video. Asami said it was imagining what it would be like for Christ if he were reincarnated into the confusing modern world. However, they are not an overtly religious band, and again, the overriding message was hope during the pandemic, with the religious elements just being a tribute to Midori's experience on her trip here. If you dive deeper into their material, you'll find that spiritual elements are common in their lyrics, but they are often a mix of Christian and Buddhist beliefs (which is a common blend in Japan). The church it is filmed in is very popular with several Japanese heavy metal bands. I strongly recommend that you check out more of their music. This song is symphonic power metal, which is the most common style they play in, but they also have several songs that are pure thrash in the style of Slayer and Metallica, some progressive metal, and some that are inspired by NWOBHM, especially Iron Maiden. Their two main influences as a band are Iron Maiden and Helloween. Individual members also name Judas Priest, Angra, Metallica, Kirk Hammet, Ritchie Blackmore, Gary Moore, Kiko Loureiro, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Harris, and Yngwie as influences. Alicia Keys is Asami's major influence.

What also nearly nobody seems to get is, that the main line of the chorus is from a song written by George Benson, that was however made really popular by Whitney Houston : "The greatest love of all". But i guess Asami at least knows where it comes from 😄

That was my experience as well. It took me a little while to warm to her vocal style, but now I absolutely love it. Obviously she's no Floor Jansen (because no one is), and she's singing in a language that she is not fluent in, but I think her singing is PERFECT for Lovebites. And not only her singing, but the way she floats around the stage like an angel - its mesmerising. And when I see her have that cute little headbang at the start of "Hammer of Wrath", I go all weak at the knees.

Definitely not my first pick for a song from Lovebites. It is not really religious, but the purpose was to give hope during the pandemy. Also the band suffered a lot from it, since they could not get out and play. As a contrast to this title, they have a song called "Raise some hell"... 😁 I know you will get tons of tips here and please try different songs, since the variation is big. I have not even heard better thrash, I listened much to Slayer in the past, but never as much as I listen to Lovebites. They cover everything I need in metal. Their two most insane songs, I think are "Set the world on fire" and "Winds of Transylvania". The Lovebites fans LOVE Asamis voice and would never replace her... 😉 And you get this kind of guitar playing in practically all their songs

This is actually the only overtly religious song they've done. A lot of their songs have a spiritual component, but no specifically religious references. Anyway, thank you for taking Hiu's suggestion, and welcome to the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background: They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miyako has composed most of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics. They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like a demon). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." Here are more clips you should check out: Their most recently posted live clips, “Set the World on Fire” kzread.info/dash/bejne/a22u1apvmarFZsY.html and “Don’t Bite the Dust” kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXyiral-mpSpfcY.html, which are both from their recently released concert DVD “Heavy Metal Never Dies”. "Edge of the World" and "We the United", back to back: kzread.info/dash/bejne/paBkj7dmqc6wc7g.html They form an incredible journey from darkness and despair to light and hope. Also, “Empty Daydream”, which starts as a ballad and becomes a real rocker: kzread.info/dash/bejne/noycwdeGfZyamrg.html; “Holy War”: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lJt12tJ-oKjJntI.html Miyako is also a professional-level concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. If you want to see what she can do on the piano, watch “Swan Song” WITH the prelude, which is Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude” (official name Étude Opus 10, No. 12 in C minor). Miyako wrote “Swan Song” using elements from several classical pieces including the Etude. This link should work: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iXac1tOgmburcZc.html. For a thrasher with heavy Slayer and Metallica vibes, “Break the Wall” kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWRmk8OJYsTVZrw.html includes two gorgeous and completely contrasting solos by M&M. For a heart-stopping ballad, “Epilogue” kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y62i0Lp9lqjUnrw.html (this includes a second song, your choice whether or not to react to both) Finally, while you will sometimes hear you should only react to live clips, as you saw, their MV’s are epic and worth seeing. Here are three more of the most spectacular: "Shadowmaker" kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKah0c6nZarepdY.html This is the song that blew up and melted faces all over the world "When Destinies Align" kzread.info/dash/bejne/moB6x86CaZa8m7A.html "Winds of Transylvania" kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqd5lrebj7PQmJs.html. You'll get lots of suggestions, just one thing: don't bother with Bloodstock footage, the sound quality is poor. Best to take suggestions with actual links. Also, you can’t go wrong with any of their official clips. Welcome to the Wolf-Pack!

My friends don't write them off just yet. You are making assumptions based off of one song which will lead you astray. #1 They are NOT a religious band even though this song has religious elements in it. #2 They don't just play power metal, they have several heavy thrash songs which will blow you away. #3 they always wear white, not to appear angelic, nor for just this music video, but to stand out on stage and to stand out from all the other metal bands who wear black. Lovebites is totally unique. Now you may not care for her vocal style, which is fine as we all have different tastes. Just remember, she has a Japanese accent because English is not her first language. The more you listen to her the easier it gets to understand. It always baffles me why people put so much stock in making out the words. There are many, many heavy metal bands whose vocals you can't understand. Her voice is beautiful.

Her voice IS beautiful. that was never a question. as for us not really understanding her, that was mostly due to the volume of the accompaniment. (though, my headphones are a little old so that may have something to do with it) thanks for the explanation as to them wearing white. it completely makes sense. and, finally, We have full intentions of reacting to more of this extremely talented band. This is a live band, not the best song to start your journey with Lovebites.. Watch the hammer of wrath live... if you like bass... The drummer is 4'8" tall and is a power house, she keeps this pace up for a 2hour set.. The twin leads M&M are right up there with the greats.. Don't pass on this band after one look... There is so much more to see.. Their ballads are outstanding and their combination of Classical piano and face melting metal is crazy good.. Do some more.. The Japanese accent is hard at first, but you will get used to it and fall in love with her in time. She is a great front woman.. Do some lives.. Break the wall, raise some hell, Thunder vengence, shadowmaker, Frozen serenade, Signs of deliverance, We the united, M.D.O., The list is long and distinguished.. Best wishes from France...

Thanks for giving props to Miho, the bassist! As a bassist myself, one of the very first things I noticed when I first saw this video (like you, this was the first song I heard from them) was that she is playing *fingerstyle* at that speed. Unbelievable! Most bassists playing this fast use a pick. I've been playing fingerstyle bass since 1985, and I've never been able to even approach this kind of speed (and now I'm in my mid-50s, and my fingers just wouldn't go that fast even if I tried). As far as the lyrics go, as somebody else already mentioned the song was inspired by visits to Christian churches. So the lyrics have ended up with a vaguely "Christian" theme. But Japan isn't a "Christian country", and so in the same way that Western bands writing songs incorporating themes from non-Western religions tend to get some of the details wrong, Lovebites has also missed the mark, theologically-speaking. But, credit for the effort. And to echo what others have said: You have to watch their live stuff. The reproduce this stuff flawlessly, often even better than the studio versions.

This is definitely not the song to start with. I'd recommend Holy War, set the world on fire, thunder vengeance, or break the wall. All are more traditional 80's metal. As others have mentioned, they are not a religious band, though they do tend to have many inspirational songs and positive messages. They also have tons of songs that don't fit that category, but that's fine too. They are better live

  • @danw6048

Looks like I got to this party very late. I looked through some of the recent comments but I am not going through the whole thing. As others have said, probably ad nauseam, Lovebites is not a religious band and certainly not a Christian band. However, like most Japanese, they have a spiritual side and that is reflected in the lyrics to several of their songs. The Japanese have never found the need to divide themselves into different religious organizations but they are also not atheists, as I think at least one commenter claimed. Midori, the stage right guitarist, was inspired by western church services to write this song and Asami wrote lyrics based upon that inspiration. Because Japanese spirituality is very individual and family based, no Japanese watching this video would have any issue over what inspires another person. We in the west, however, are much more knee jerk in our tribalistic reactions to such things. I strongly encourage a reaction to another Lovebites song. My suggestion is Set The World On Fire from a 2021 concert. It has the benefits of being live, relatively new and more representative of their music. We realize that they aren't a religious band, we were just commenting on the religious overtones and to hear that the song's atmosphere was inspired by western churches makes perfect sense. We are looking forward to more Lovebites on our channel.

Probably not the best 1st song to hear from them, it's a masterpiece but may give the wrong idea. They've been around since 2017 and this is a newer song, it is not a xian song, it's an inspirational song not to any specific religion, but whatever article of universal faith inspires you personally, it's just about following the light out of the darkness. Whatever that light may be for you. As for their accent, yes she has an accent, but those of us who've followed them know it takes little time to get use to it and I can understand every word without a problem. They are masters and their catalog is nothing but continuous masterpieces. If a person is NOT into Speed, Power, Thrash and Symphonic metal they won't enjoy this band. All Glory to LOVEBITES and all my brothers and sisters in The Wolf Pack everywhere.

Next.. try to listen Holy War or Set The World On Fire or The Hammer Of Wrath... Just for your info... they won Best New Band by Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award 2018... Touring with Dragonforce in UK Tour 2018.. Performing at Wacken Open Air 2018... Performing at Download Festival both UK and Spain 2019... The singer have invited to ft with Lizzy Hale and Halestorm... They had cover Eagle Fly Free by Helloween and Painkiller by Judas Priest... Yesss... Asami not a rock singer like Alissa White Gluz that can growl... she also not like Tarja or Ginjer or Simone Simon or Floor Jansen... but for me I respect her effort.. hardwork.. dedication to metal genre because she came from nothing.. zero knowledge about metal and now she knows the band like Halestorm.. Judas Priest.. Helloween.. Slayer.. Megadeth.. Metallica.. Testament and etc... The others members had band before and experience to play rock and metal... The singer have said that she have to chamge her style of singing but the others members said no! By the way... thanks to react to our Alpha... maybe try other song and who knows that you can find what are you looking for.... Untill then.. stay safe and stay metal... 🤘🤘🐺🐺🤘🤘....

Even though this is an MV, you’ve just watched greatness. These Japanese women are extremely talented, skillful, versatile and proficient musicians. They really shine in their live performances. Those twin lead guitar solos by Midori and Miyako are already legendary, in just six years. Asami used to sing R&B, jazz and soul before she joined Lovebites. Miyako is a concert level pianist. I agree, this is a great song but not the right one to react for the very first time. If you like heavy stuff, I recommend “Set the world on fire”, “The Awakening/Hammer of wrath”, “Break the wall”, “Winds of Transylvania”, “Raise some hell”, “Shadowmaker”, “Above the Black Sea”, “Under the red sky”, “Dancing with the devil”, “Scream for me” (all live)

BTW, the band was founded by the bassist and the drummer and they met the guitarists, then they found the singer from R&B field. They wanted the band this way with that singer. The band doesn't think the singer doesn't fit the band. The singer may not fits to your preference but the band likes that way. Everyone has each own preference but It's worth to try to give a chance to something new to you.

don´t write them off. they are the best band since a long time and not religious. the video was shot in a wedding chapel in tokyo, which is used by many japanese metal bands for videos. because it was short before christmas, they wanted some solemn iconography. the second storyline with the young man was about "what would it be like if he came back now? " the lyrics for this one are inspired by gospels. I recommend "raise some hell" live 2020 (heavy rock), "holy war" live 2020 (powermetal), break the wall live 2020 (thrash) and "set the world on fire" live 2021 (thrash) don´t miss.

A curiosity :) : Japanese are not religious. They are atheists. In origin, they are Shintoists. Shintoism is not monotheistic but animistic culture. A spiritual practice or popular philosophy and not a doctrinal religion. And the setting itself is a...setting. It's not a church :) The theme was addressed to the worst phase of the pandemic. This song helped many headbangers who faced depression. Lovebites is an amazing band. Everything about them is different: they are women (Heavy metal is predominantly male. And the criteria too, but but these women are independent and rock!), they are not concerned with gratuitous aggression in music (their focus is music), they dress in white (and not in black). At the same time, they all possess immense talent. We rock fans got this great gift, this wonderful new heavy metal band. Please more Lovebites! In concert the vocalist Asami says, " - We are Lovebites. And we play Heavy Metal!!!!"🤘 - After listening, we came to the conclusion that there is no doubt about it and they are spectacular! Long live Lovebites! 🎸🎸🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥

you have to agree that the set looks like a church. But we never said that the song was a religious song. We said that had religious overtones. Personally I(Dirk) think that by using religious overtones and settings, they were more easily able to convey the message of hope that they intended.

Lovebites have no equals, talent wise. They have a catalogue of 50 tracks, all different. As a fan, this track was excellent from day one, but as an introduction to the band for newcomers it’s definitely not the song I’d have suggested. It was released at the height of Covid and is an analogy about the world making it’s way through it. Obviously they couldn’t sing about a flu pandemic, that would have been turgid. The guitarist on our left was intrigued by gospel music on visits to the U.K. and US. She wrote the song (her first) and probably had a big say in the videos theme. It is unfortunate that because it includes certain references it sounds like a religious song, but it isn’t, and nor do the band identify with any religion, Christian or otherwise. The word hallelujah appears in several Lovebites songs, but is the expression of rejoicing that is why it’s used. The ladies are all Japanese, and the Japanese language is not akin to any other language, not even Korean. This means that they will incorporate words and phrases, with the help of Japanese speakers who are also fluent in English, that may not necessarily be used by English speakers….let alone American speakers (yes, I think it’s about time it was recognised as it’s own language!) 90% of their material is available on KZread (mostly pirated) in live performances. It will probably shock you to learn that they are as good, many people, myself included, believe better, live. They play with immaculate precision, nanosecond timing and they play at mostly that pace for approximately two hours, with encores. That means finger picking bass at high speed, guitar picking at high speed, almost constant double bass artillery and Asami, the vocalist, reaching those peaks with relative ease and no sign of strain for 120 minutes. And the encores are treated as a spectacle, the band returning to the stage with dramatic introductory music. At this point there will be several suggestions for you to take a look at the 2020 live performance of “Holy War”, the “standard” introductory track for most reactions. Here again I’m going to be contrary, and suggest an utter change of pace and mood, yet with breathtaking musical ability and really emotional vocals. For although Asami sings power ballads most of the time (so yes, she does fit the band, she was chosen specifically because she’s a mezzo soprano) she was for several years a backing vocalist and RnB/Jazz oriented. She’s also a semi trained ballet dancer. The song I think, no, strongly urge you to watch next is “Epilogue”, link below. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fH11rLt7pdixd7A.html

It's not a church band at all.. Their music is heavier than any japanese female metal band.. Maybe, heavier than you think.. They did Heavy metal, Power metal, Power ballad, Thrash metal, and Hard-rock.. But I suggest to watch their live performance, because they're so much better live.. Please don't judge them right away after hearing just one song.. At least, watch their live performance first, and you can talk what you think.. Have a great day..

Bad reaction. You stop it every 5 seconds to make comments about a band you never seen before. And you can't know anything about this band from watching 30 seconds of a music video. You are nit-picking too much. You have no idea what this band does. Watch ten more Lovebites videos, and then come back and revisit your comments. Watch their live performances. This music video is not something I would recommend to a first-time listener. If you check out more Lovebites songs, you will understand what you just discovered. If not...... your loss. Crystal, on the other hand, has always been more in tune with the lyrics and the message that they convey. everyone looks for different things in music and that's what is so great about musical conversations. everyone has something to contribute.

I doubt he could have anyway. Miho, who started the band and unfortunately left last year, is a huge fan of Iron Maiden but she is also a fan of Slayer. Midori, who came up with the idea of this song and was the cowriter, is a huge fan of the Brazilian guitarist Kiko Loureiro. formerly with Angra and now with Megadeth.
