thanks for nothing, Netflix... 🦋 THE TEARSMITH reaction & commentary

I'd watch it all over again just for that one scene, yk? but honestly, why in 2024 we still don't give enough context for non-readers?

@@reactswithria I'm reading the book rn and now I think that the movie feels very incomplete which I didn't think when I first watched it. And they didn't just leave out a few scenes but a lot of them actually and crucial ones. Like where Lionel drives the car towards, the actual scene in the book makes much more sense and is more sensitive. I am ngl for the first watch, i loved the movie bcz i enjoyed it but now reading the book, it feels like it could have been better

Bruh, this was such a rushed movie. This would have been an excellent miniseries, but as an hour and a half movie, they were trying to move too fast. I mean, the scene of the attempted grape with a silent G followed immediately by their first time was hard for me to stomach. Seriously, they did not leave the room, she was on the same desk. Also, the way he immediately was touching her from the start, and the way she was pretty much immediately chill with it, that would tell me that despite the two of them "hating each other" that they had been doing stuff for a while. Personal experience, people who have been physically abused take a while to accept someone touching them, that they don't jump a bit at every touch (not me, friends and exes). Realistically, I see where the line was going in this movie, but this felt like a cliff notes version of a series, not a complete movie. Also, unnecessary nudity was unnecessary. She did not have to be topless in that scene, it really did not add anything, facts are the scene with him being sick and kissing her stomach was more erotic as well, so they don't even have the titillation excuse, they had better titillation without nudity.

I totally agree, it should have been a series and to me its not cringe, the intimacy scenes were so good. I think it was the authors intention in being a part of this adaptation movie for it to be a teaser for her book so that people would of course go and get her book. Which is annoying but hey what can you do.

Absolutely beautiful. The amount of incidents that occurred in said novel is so much more compared to what they gave us :/ The movie was just sloppy production , in my opinion. Go all the way back to the beginning with her mom, she was using a band-aid to "make the hurt go away" on her mom. It is at 0:38 seconds into the movie. Again, going back to my comment, they rushed through things, making the movie almost a cliff notes version of the story I can feel is there. They throw out stuff in a 10 second snippet that is going to be a defining character trait, but it is a "sneeze and you are lost" thing.

@@reactswithria Yeah, it was a coping mechanism, and a not terribly uncommon one. Kind of like I have a sling I will sometimes put on despite being well outside the time for needing it, because I have positive feeling towards it because it reduced my pain when it was at its worst. Going from a psychological perspective, she also probably associated the feeling of the texture with pain relief, and with purely psychological pain, that is enough to create a positive dopamine loop to take the edge off. Think about it, when she was tied down, one of the few things she could consistently do is rub her fingers together. The lady who ran the orphanage would probably not bother checking to see if she actually needed the bandages, particularly because she was known for making animal friends. The removing of the bandages at the end was to signify that she had finally gotten past the pain by dealing with the one who caused it, so she no longer needed the placebo/ security blanket. I finally figured out what to truly call this movie though. This is a story where the author wrote the outline and then a rough out to connect it. Not even really a first draft, this is more get the rough idea there and then smooth it out by going through it again, and someone snatched this off the author's desk before they could go back and fix it.
