This is a sad day for Duke fans everywhere. As a kid JJ Redick was my favorite Duke player of all time. I used to jump up and down the entire game like the Cameron crazies every game in the early 2000s. Coach K is the greatest basketball coach of all time. Cried watching this thank you JJ & Coach for my childhood memories you are truly special individuals. BEAT UNC GO BLUE DEVILS

@oo70mar was referring to the person who wrote this comment. He said greatest basketball coach, not college. So, that includes all levels and I think that’s just an hot take. Coach K is in the top 10 all time but not number 1.

@oo70mar agreed. No shade towards coach K tho, his case in the all time coach debate definitely is made stronger if we include is whole body of work including USA basketball, which is why I consider him in the top 10 all time.

Even as a NC Tar Heels fan, (and Duke hater) I've got to stop and give coach K his well deserved standing ovation.👏For his illustrious career and the tremendous influence he had on so many young men as well as the sport. The entire ACC can finally breath a sigh of relief that this Tyrant of college hoops is retiring and removing his boot-heel from the throats of Duke's opponents.👢Take a bow coach K, congrats on your retirement and mad RESPECT🙏

Imagine a college coach that's so good that he was sent to coach for the nation's Olympic and FIBA teams instead of any NBA coach. This is how much he's respected. 2 FIBA gold medals and 3 Olympic gold medals (4 if you count '92 as assistant coach)

So blessed to be a part of the Duke family since my freshman year in 1962 with two Duke graduate sons in the nineties, one of two daughters-in-law (Duke cheerleader at back-to-backs) and now a sophomore granddaughter on campus, I am the luckiest of all to have these men in my family. “We are family🎶🎶”

Beautiful stuff - thanks again for sharing. My favorite moment between you two is when he talked about how the young JJ Redick wasn't prepared for the price that a player has to pay to achieve the fame that he aspires to obtain. I could see how him saying that affected you deeply. Could certainly feel that father-son relationship between you.

The greatest coach of all-time doesn't lose as a 10 point favorite in the championship game with a loaded team nor does he lose to a 15 seed and go through stretches that last nearly a decade in which his teams underachieve. He's the "greatest of all-time" in your eyes because you're like 24 and believe everything that the media tells you without thinking for yourself.

The greatest coach of all-time? He's lost to a 15 seed, lost as a 10-point favorite in the title game with a loaded team that anyone could have coached to win a title, nearly lost to Butler with a stacked team full of McDonald's All-Americans, spent several seasons underachieving between titles despite having stacked teams, and now with the whole Amaker situation (not sure why that man stayed loyal to Snake K for decades), he's shown his true colors.

However, I always watched the games, all these years. Now I realize it wasn't primarily because of the players it was because of Coach K. I love the show JJ, enjoy the game. I don't get into what ifs and what I could change if I could but man, I wish I had a Coach like Coach K in my life. The notion is that in order to be great, you need a great mentor. Kudos to all the men blessed with the opportunity to learn under a truly great manbuilder! I only have one little Coach K story. Illinois played against Duke in Atlanta in 2003. I had coaches tickets. JJ, you were there. It was you vs Deron Williams. SStephen A was there. I don't even remember what happened in the game. All I remember is when Coach K and his assignments came out in all black suits. A feeling hit me in the stomach. I was intimidated and I wasn't even playing. Coach had the most intense look on his face I've ever seen. I instantly realized how real the Duke mystique was. The players had the same demeanor. JJ was the cockiest man on 2 feet. It was great. You haven't lived until you have seen a Sheldon Williams illegal screen in person! Salute to Coach K!!

Coach K it the greatest college basketball coach ever. He’s coached in three different eras and won national championships in all of those eras. No disrespect to John Wooden (who has the most championships), but check his coaching record before Sam Gilbert got there and his record after he got there. Bill Walton is on record (maybe jokingly) saying he got paid more at UCLA than what Jerry West got paid on the Lakers. In any case, to me, coach K is basically Bobby Knight (who has the greatest basketball mind of all time) without all that other unnecessary baggage he brought.

When you coach one team for a large portion of your life, you’re going to rack up a lot of wins. 2. For the last 10-12 years this man has had the best, or a top 3, recruiting class basically every year, and time and time again they were upset by inferior teams come playoff time. That’s coaching.
