It was just as popular as the theme to Hill St Blues. Both hit the UK top 20.

Having seen this upload again, I'm just realising that the TV Eye report, 'Bitter Harvest', referred to by Thames TV announcer Philip Ellsmore, was about the growing severe famine in Ethiopia. You can see from the captions that the programme line-up - and early closedown - was unfamiliar, and that's because there was an ongoing technicians' dispute at Thames. This was the second serious industrial dispute there in the second half of 1984, in both cases eventually giving rise to management mounting a limited schedule of assorted repeats of Thames programmes and imports, as well as brief news bulletins (not from ITN). While the technicians relented and allowed the TV Eye programme to be shown, due to the nature of the story, I'm not so sure it could be shown on that date throughout the ITV Network, so it was shown (again) a week or two later, by which time BBC News had caught-up with the story, with Michael Buerk's chilling reports, and then 'Band Aid', 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' ... and the rest is history.

The 'Part one of a new two part story' episode of 'Knight Rider' is the third season opener, 'Knight of the Drones'.

Definitely sometime in 1984 when Thames had two strikes which lead to management putting out programmes but not taking network shows, nor ITN. Usual start ups would be at 1:40pm, but I'm not surprised at how early the closedown is. Great find!

Ulster Television had a prolonged strike around Easter in April 1987 (someone had been on 'sick-leave' from the company, but found to be working for his own business). Ulster Television sacked him. His union colleagues promptly walked-out. Ulster Television had no programmes at all for many days, until returning with a limited service of no more than ~6.30 to ~11.30 each evening. That service comprised entirely of imported and locally produced repeats, of which UTV had extremely little compared to Thames. Nothing, including ITN, was shown from any other ITV company, presumably because unions in other regions showed their support by not supplying feeds and, had management tried to circumvent that, the strike would have spread. I don't really know how it was resolved in the end. One thing I did notice was that, when Thames was on-strike or had these limited services, Channel 4 would not cross-announce what was over on ITV. When Ulster was on strike, they did continue to do so - not even adding that that was except for viewers in Northern Ireland. I think we knew our place.

Channel 4 had their unitary signal fed to the ITV company who would then insert commercials into Channel 4's feed and then send it to the transmitters. When the ITV company was on strike, BT or the IBA would send the signal to the transmitters. Channel 4 would cross-promote if Thames could supply Channel 4 with the slides. The other thing I was thinking was, while Channel 4 was a national service, their output was coming from London anyway so I don't think the Channel 4 Presentation Department had had the information passed on to them in time that strikes did occur in those regions.

BelfastGav Do we know if commercial breaks were inserted onto Channel Four during the Thames disputes? I’ve seen examples of the clean feed with interval captions but did this last the duration of the strikes?

No there weren't. ITV played out the advertisements on Channel 4 in each region as they sold the airtime until 1993, but while the unitary signal was carried usually by the ITV companies this was the responsibility of BT or the IBA who sent Channel 4 signals to the transmitters. Channel 4 could not be put off the air if an ITV company were on industrial dispute.
