Ms. Jansen is exquisite! She has a great depth to her playing and an unparalleled expressive technique. Everyone has played this, but she gives us something new, passionate and exciting. She is a revelation, I love the smile she flashes when the audience claps prematurely. Hate the artsy camera work, but it's nonetheless one of my favorite videos. Bravo!

This musical masterpiece from Massenet always brings tears to my eyes and this is an exceptional recital of it. For me, this piece of music tells the story of the emotional highs and lows that we encounter as we pass through this life. This is what I call 'musical poetry' and I feel richer every time I hear it.

This piece is such a tear jerker, it's amazing that the queen, princess, prince and mayor Cohen all kept their cheeks dry. The story / opera itself is also a very interesting one, especially food for thought under current political conditions in the Netherlands. See Wikipedia for more info. Janine, THANKS!!!

One of the interesting things about this performance is that the whole ensemble is tuned to about a 445 A. I think it gives the performance an extra bit of brightness, which, mixed with the pathos of the music, makes the sorrow so much sweeter.

I like it she played the piece with passion and with a style of her own The way all solos should be played. I just noticed that right at the beginning she seems to be adjusting the wire from a pick-up or microphone on the instrument - and there seems to be a microphone sticking out of her dress near her right shoulder. I'm not trying to detract from her performance or abilities - I just never would have believed that her performance was amplified. You'd think it would pick up some of the scritches from the bow - unless she doesn't have any?!

Beautiful... magnificent i truly love her vibrato and purity oh the melody. i probably gonna get harassed for making this comment: i personally don't like the way she kind hunches over. but it doesn't take away from her tone and quality of playing,so, power to the hunch!

I just went and listened to several versions of the meditation...including Yo-Yo-Ma's and Anne-Sophie Mutter's. I still prefer this one although they are ALL great performances. I am sad to hear that JJ might be ill and not performing these days. I truly hope that is not true and that someday she might come and play with the indianapolis symphony.

Considering where the "Meditation" falls in the opera(act II), before the alluring courtesan's conversion, it's not unreasonable to have the "Meditation" convey her(Thais) sensual sexuality. Beyond that.."Die gustibus non est disputatum". It's a matter of taste.

Ms. Jansen's rendering is definitely my favorite since I first heard this piece many years ago. A nuances which I think help make it so: The orchestral "accompaniment" vs. piano. The piano is equal-tempered; as a result, many of the notes in sharp keys are slightly flat (it gets worse the more sharps you add), so playing in-tune with a piano cause the player to slightly flatten notes, detracting from their brilliance, and blurring the "human-voice" quality of the sound. Not so with this video!

It's a beautiful performance, but I like Sarah Chang's rendition better (I'm aware that's not a fair comparison, since Chang plays so effortless it's crazy). But I really enjoyed how much sentiment Janine Jansen brought to the piece.

  • @TomBarrister

She certainly does not too much vibrato for this particular work. She plays it very intelligently, with feeling, and without overdoing it. The orchestra got a bit carried away in spots, though.
