Thailand's (NOT) First Kaiju Inspired Movie | Garuda

Today I look at Thailand's Godzilla inspired film Garuda released in 2004.
UPDATE
It has come to my attention that apparently the movie is NOT the first Thai Kaiju inspired movie (Not even close). As there have been many others that have come before it. Thailand is not a country that is on my radar when it comes to Monster films so I had no idea there were so many more. I had only thought Garuda was the first as that's what it says on the back of the DVD case, as well as what the Director/Producer mentions in the Making of Documentary. Even Google says its the first Thai Kaiju movie. I'm not perfect and do make mistakes like any other person. Going forward on these videos i'll defiantly try to look more into things like this before making assumptions. My apologies about the video everyone mistakes happen.

Turning the noble legend into a stupid kaiju is offensive. He is after all the carrier of Lord Vishnu and not some dumb animal. If they want to do Garuda do it from the authentic stories and not some Gojira mash.

Just watching this video you could get an idea for a better movie. The Garuda is hunting the Naga and both can disguise as people causing people to mistake the Garuda as the typical "kill all people" monster when it just wants to find and stop the Naga. With the final battle being them both fighting.

Eh, snakes being evil is overdone and both creatures have really rich mythologies as intelligent beings to draw on. I'd think it interesting if both trying to communicate in Human form that the other is "the evil one", but neither is in the right.

There's been some of Thai giant monster movies however most were fantasy films based on mythology with kaiju on the side, Japanese co-production and / or, copyright infringements, and generic giant crocodiles. Garuda may have been the first attempt to do something unique beyond the aforementioned but, like you stated, the results are lacking. Tah Tien (1973) Giant and Jumbo Ace / Mars Men (1974) Hanuman and the Five Riders (1975) The 6 Ultra Brothers vs The Monster Army (1979) Crocodile (1980 or 1979) Space Warriors 2000 (1985) Garuda (2004) The Lake (2022) Leio: The Terrible Giant (2022) Nagoraira (comic book series, honorable mention)

As much as I love *Japanese* kaiju movies, I really wish that other countries would give audiences a nice, big budget kaiju film. I understand that it's expensive to have good CGI, so that's one reason why *Thailand* probably can't produce such a film. However, I'd love *South Korea* to remake *Yongarry.* The *South Korean* film industry is pretty good and pumps out solid films each year. And they've already made a great classic called *The Host.* I hope a serious filmmaker comes along and tries. And even if it's not *Yongarry,* they could make a completely new kaiju.

It’s already been mentioned, but other Kaiju films were made in Thailand long before this one. Not just the Tsuburaya rip-offs either. I believe there were some giant animal films (giant crocodiles) and some based on Thai myths that were quite crazy. I remember reading about them on blogs. Also, when you go to a movie in Thailand, they play like their beloved king’s theme song and make you stand up in the theater. As for Garuda, I’ll always remember “Oh yeah, what’s up, cool man” more than anything else

I will give this to the movie, it has a really cool song that plays over the end credits. Don't have a clue what is being sung, but I like the beat and chorus parts lol. There was a lot of effort put into this flick, but the filmmakers were probably a bit too ambitious for it. Still, it's not all bad. I have certainly seen far worse. Most of your Thai monster flicks at this time were just giant crocodile stuff. Maybe the occasional snake. So it's cool they tried to step out and dive a little bit into the countries spiritual beliefs. Glad to see someone give a pretty good take on this movie and not just completely trash it for it's very dated SPFX and what not. Honestly I hold this movie like I do the current Chinese giant monster flicks that have been coming out as of late. Curse of the Kraken, Monster Boa, Land Shark, and etc. etc. The SPFX and and stuff in those flicks are about the same as what was used in this movie. A movie that was 15 years earlier o_0

Great work Finz! 🙂👍 Yeah, i wasn’t expecting much going into _Garuda_ beyond a mediocre-effort bandwagon jump-on, so i wasn’t tremendously disappointed 😅 That said, considering how it took S.Korea a few “meh” movies before getting it right with “The Host” i guess i can give Garuda a pass 😄 Looking forward to what “The Lake” has in store though!

I got this on dvd because I was big fan of giant monster movies. The intro was just the tone setter I needed, this kaiju is taking up the role of a Blood Knight. It wants to fight until itself is killed. It's been almost 20 years now, they should remake it and do more with it. Heck if they want to do race issues then do it right.

I think the social commentary could’ve tied right into Garuda’s actual motivations. Maybe Garuda could disguise itself as a human to hide from the Naga that hunted down its species in ancient times. People could discriminate against its human form as it still has somewhat animalistic behavior. This leads it to revert back into its kaiju form and reek havoc across Thailand.

As Thai people, thank you for this clip. It makes the film to be known in larger scope. In Thailand, this film is not successful due to poor plot mentioning the racism and conflict between Thai and foreigners on their belief about Garuda since for Thai people, Garuda is the sacred creature respected by Thai people. The first recorded Thai kaiju movies is about the Thai marine attacking the communist island. The island is protected by giant octopus. I feel sorry that I can't find the exact name of the movies.
