Welcome to Southern Asia where safety isn't even in the top 25 considerations. Fingers within inches of accessory belts, exposed scalding hot engine, and that prop! What if you miscalculate in a crowded waterway and take a bite out of something other than the water? I love it.

What is the advantage to this over a normal inboard and rudder? The engineering that went into these things is impressive to be able to balance a diesel engine that weighs well over 2000lbs so you can move it on 2 axis with no effort is impressive on its own but to be able to control it both at idle and speed is amazing the torque on an engine under load is not a small force would love to see how the gimbal is designed

The advantages are: 1) Easy to install a one piece complete engine, transmission and propeller shaft/rudder. Easy maintenance and fault finding. 2) The gimbal, I don’t know how they work it. But they are using the propeller as a surface drive. Half in the water, half out. Very efficient and if the propeller gets fouled by debris, just raise it and clean it. Lastly, these boats are very narrow so they have combined with the surface drive propeller, a very good fuel efficiency and good speed.

Ok let me answer. I am from thailand. The reason they design like that because. The long-tail is a first design. It cheap but have high efficiency in the rivers and a shallow areas. The engine will be easier to repair once they damaged and the boat are wood so the water would seep in. Not like a fiberglass or aluminum or metal boats. If the engine are deep in a boat it will be hard to fix and repair. And the boat can be damage from engine vibration. Which can lead to engine damage eventually. And if engine caught fire. It wont butn the boat too. Also yah the another reason is engine cooling. Also. There are way more reason I didnt tell but hope you understand

I see no difference, both take an incredible amount of effort, just to leave the dock and turn.

I think the point is that these are boats that can be made with a second-hand car or truck engine, ideal for areas where a Mercury and Evinrude engines are rare to come by.

They lack a second engine. Bow thrusters are designed to push a bow around. But just a second engine next to the first one, that can do the trick. One forward, one reverse, that's all. Much cheaper is that beefy cable to the dock, creating a pivot point, when the engine is pushing full power ahead. No, these ship owners do exactly, what is best. Would you have the nerve? You can easily make a mistake and crash into something. Experience, dude, experience.

@@johnr.timmers2297 In shallow water, a high power water jet would be pefect. I think such a long prop shaft is far cheaper. They need such a long shaft to get the prop as vertical as possible. A shorter shaft would push the ship up, it's less effective. For a light vessel however, pushing up could be a smart move.

@@MrDavidelliottjr You are right not all people is morons, but you must be one of the morons in this case for not understanding that not being able to see other boats is indeed a problem when YOU are the one steering the boat. In this case he most likely is able to see when he is standing like normal when he gets up to cruise speed.
