🇹🇭Thailand: In the Footsteps of the King l Featured Documentary

A look at the life and legacy of Thailand's King Bhumibol and the challenges facing his successor.
Thailand's new King Maha Vajiralongkorn assumed Thailand's throne on December 1, more than a month after the death of his father, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The 64-year-old had been expected to ascend to the throne immediately, but asked for time to grieve.
He accepted the throne following an invitation from parliament formalising his accession, but the official coronation won't take place until October 2017 - after a year of mourning for King Bhumibol.
Vajiralongkorn succeeds a man described as Thailand's peace broker and champion of democracy. The much respected King Bhumibol succumbed to his illnesses at the age of 88 and his death set off widespread grief throughout the country.
Serving since 1946, King Bhumibol was the country's symbol of national unity. Since the transition to a constitutional monarchy in 1932, the country has had 20 constitutions, 29 prime ministers, witnessed 19 attempted coups, 12 of them successful.
Yet, in these turbulent political waters, he was a constant anchor and was the one credited for keeping Thailand from plunging into political anarchy.
His passing comes at a time when the country is once again facing familiar challenges to its democracy: increased military control of the political system and ever-growing divisions in Thai society.
The same will be expected of the new king.
King Vajiralongkorn, educated in the UK and at Australia's Royal Military College, holds high-ranking posts in the Thai army. Currently single, he has been married three times and is father to seven children.
He did not participate in most public and political duties, leaving them to his revered father; now, without the country's familiar guiding hand, many worry that Thailand's deep divisions will resurface.
The new king will need all his father's political acumen and authority to guide Thailand through what most predict will be challenging times ahead.
"When a person has set such a high standard, and is much loved and respected and admired for his accomplishments and for what he did, it's always difficult for a successor," says Anand Panyarachun, former Thai prime minister.
So will he be able to fill the shoes of his father and become Thailand's moral and spiritual authority?
We look at the life and legacy of King Bhumibol and the challenges facing his successor, King Vajiralongkorn.

King Bhumipol will go down in world history as one of the greatest kings. scientist, humitarian and musician. I am not Thai but I admired and respected the King, beloved by his people. He protected his people in times of difficulty, earned the respect of global leaders and helped to make Thailand famous. His memory and his music will live on.

Democracy needs time to settle, it needs time to become a tradition and people need to protect it. Spain fell in anarchy because of Franco in spite the fact that it was a democracy before! You can't except a country change from a monarchy to a stable democracy over night, thats impossible.

The best form of government for a society is what suits that society the best. For some countries it's a democratic system, for some its monarchy, for some its military rule. For a society to be truly democratic the population needs to be educated and aware.

When he was younger he lived in Thailand a lot to help Thai people. Later in his life, he spend more time in Germany because his son lived there. And his father wanted him to live as an ordinary person to learn hardship and feel what it's like out there so that he can bring what he learn and use it to help Thai people. If he continues to live in Thailand more, it would be harder for him to learn things as an ordinary person because of how people treat him.

So maybe he want's his son to grow up in Middle Europe too. And he had all the luxury what a prince could demand...he didn't grew up in poverty or had a normal life like other boys (like his father).

because this king loved to play with prostitues in thailand and became infected with aids virus, in germany i belief he stayed in some south german village cause he needs to go do regular blood check for his blood cancer. Thats why he stays more in germany than in thailand, because of that he owes germany 3.5 billion dollar inheritance tax from the billions he got from his father witch he won't pay for sure, the ordinary poor Thai population will have to pay it with their tax money. sea-globe.com/crown-prince-inheritance-tax/

That's fake. Thailand's economy in the Taksin era wasn't that good. He just lured the peasants with the "A-million for a Village" project. That's the first bribe (for a future vote) that Taksin committed. The result of that project was "the villagers were all in debt". The money disappeared from the village, but ended in the coffer of big corporates. The villagers' hands were just a conveyer carried the one million Baht back to the capitalists. I am a villager, a farmer in Sisaket province, but I studied and graduated from a prestigious university in Bangkok.

Rama IX is like Queen Elizabeth II: beloved, with Bhumibol helping his people and the Queen being rather humble and hardworking and all. Rama X is like Prince Charles: controversial, and the former is a lot more controversial than the latter. Sure, Charles is political (the closest I can think of as an analogue to him is Charles II Stuart or Edward VIII Windsor), but Vajiralongkorn reminds me of Caligula, with his desire to rule from Germany and having his poodle being a Marshal of the Air Force or something and all.

Sorry, but the coronation was not when explained here. Instead, it is to be held between 4-6 May, this year. The majority of the populace prefer the second daughter to be monarch but that is a very convoluted road to go down to achieve that goal. The actions of the heir are not truly appreciated by the general population because they still recall and dislike his philandering and disregard for the people. The present government was established after a military coup. They do not seem to have a solid agenda for anything, as they make laws then change them as they keep changing the goal posts, etc. and appear to be just present to make money for their own pockets and they are not democratic in their approach to governing. They still suppress the education system so that the elite can continue to rule while the poor continue to be conditioned to stay under their thumb. Many ex-pats are now leaving the country because of the enforced policies introduced by Immigration which are also oppressive demand that they have to meet more rigid conditions to maintain their eligibility to live in the country. In the meantime, many neighbouring countries have started to benefit from the migration of the ex-pats mainly because obtaining visas, and a host of other social issues are easier to be met. You have to have lived there, as I did for 20+ years to understand what I am saying. This narrative never mentioned that it was the military who did the killing. To my recollection and knowledge, very few of the Red Shirts had any form of firearms, and only a few weapons developed from farm implements. 'nuf sed

The king of Thailand show his people how to make and living by creating opportunity's and many skills with farming and tourism during there hard times!x with a zero tollo on drugs if one couldn't afford the bail.. :) Now how many royal familys around the world would get off there butts to do as much as this great leader with no meal meal or banquet provided :) But having to see many victims of fatal road crash escapes use skate boards instead of wheel chairs and brooms for crotches was a eye opener..x

+ItsGOOD iws + Every country needs military (or so they believe). But Western colonization is no longer a problem. Even if it were, Thailand could easily be colonized. The Vietnam War for instance had nothing to do with "Western Colonization". America had/has no interest in Colonization. France was the nation who had colonized Vietnam and other SEA nations.

The old Thai king, for all the reverance towards him, is truly a failure as a man. People may bow to him, fall to their knees in spiritual ecstacy whenever he sits like a statue, but the fact that his son grew up to be like that speaks volumes to the lack of love and guidance the old king showed to the new king. There is a saying that the success of a person is defined by how your children grow up. Many ordinary men juggle jobs and parenting and still their kids grow up well. The old thai king had all the money and time in the world, and yet failed totally as a parent. Thats his true colors beneath the pompous masquerade. I think the new thai king is inside a good man, it is the old king who strikes me as the evil one.

In my opinion, Thailand will do just fine under its new king. The country has had many religious-minded, intellectual, scholarly types of kings over the years. Maha Vajiralongkorn has a military background, and is more of a macho type (for lack of a better description). He will grow in his role as king, and the people will get used to the change after so many decades under the previous king. Nothing to worry about.
