Thailand: How to avoid getting stuck in traffic | Global Ideas

Spending hours a day stuck in traffic jams is normal for Bangkok's commuters. Public transport is run-down and unreliable. Electric tuk-tuks are a green and efficient alternative, and the elevated rapid transit system, the Skytrain, is set to be expanded.

Not true. I live all year round and except last two years I would say, it worsen but only at certain period of the year, when people from the countryside around burn their fields. You can check the real condition with some app so the rest of the year it is really not that bad for such a huge city.

When I stayed in central Bkk almost two years ago, I had a high apartment view over some major roads near the river, and they were constantly absolutely jammed full - more like car parks than motorways etc. The metro lines or sky train are good, and the river ferries and boats are Very refreshing in the wind - but man, the misery car commuters or bus passengers must feel every day...

Fun fact - it is cheaper for 2 pax traveling in a car in Bangkok than taking mass transit system (due to very cheap gas and very expensive public transport, local authorities have no clue how to manage the city whereabouts, only very good at enriching own pockets)

really? I never thought about that but a BTS ride for 2 ppl would be about THB 60? I would have thought a car ride, factoring in gas and tolls, would be more expensive?

  • @dumpjohn

@@benp2022 THB 60, you say ? For a return trip, really ? Most commuters come from suburbs, often exchanging BTS and MRT, costs rise enormously, since there is no common card for those 2 From Tao Poon to Sukhumvit, MRT charges 42 THB pp, car ride is about 12 km. Cost of return car ride including tolls would be around 45 THB worth of gas plus 50 for tolls, in total 95 THB. MRT ride is 168 THB.

They should switch to the Electric Bus first. Diesel Bus has 5-10 miles per gallon, extremely wasteful and polluting. Electric buses are going down in price rapidly too.

Yes switch to electric buses and make them much more enjoyable to ride(comfortable/clean/practical). Also, the major intersections here are sometimes operated by humans with not experience in traffic management. Engineers have developed algorithms that should be implemented for effecient management of traffic flow.

I would say the following reasons are the main factor of the congestions. 1. The city plan e.g. roads are really terrible. Houses and residences should be settled right next to the main road!! 2. It is sad that Department of Traffic and Transportation do increase the level of difficulty on the driving test while letting private driving school giving out driving licenses to ppl easily as there might be dark money going on between private driving scl and the gov sector. As a result, some ppl do not know or strictly obey all the rules e.g. driving slowly on the right lane on the motorway, using LINE while driving, do not know about the rules in the roundabout, etc. 3. There has been never any signs of improvements in public transport and all the gov is thinking is to charge ppl while you do not provide them a good alternatives. Congestion charge but no improvement in accessibility and convenience of public transportation, for example, low in the frequency of sky/underground trains, most train stations are not accessible who lives far away from the main road, no particular lanes for public busses, no timetable for busses like London or a digital screen showing how long will the bus arriving at each stop. 4. Expressway and motorway should be free for anyone, Thailand is not a poor country tbh but the gov just try to keep secret where all the money goes. Every year, we pay a large amount for car tax and the fuel price in Thailand is 2 times of Malaysia. This is unfair to all Thai people.

Bangkok suffered similar problems to American cities. They can't see past the private transportation vs public transit. To encourage people out of their cars requires a reliable, extensive train network and buses operating in priority bus lanes just so they can stick to a schedule and high frequency. Once that is done, public transit is convenient enough to plan your day around. People want convenience and comfort to and from work.

The problem of BKK is the shortage of parking lot and air pollution. If U try to use the car for suburbs and urban train service for BKK area, U will find the parking space is already packed when U arrive at the urban part. U have to take minutes to find the space at the same time. Driving to the destination directly is still easier than it. Furthermore, air pollution in BKK damages the lung of residents seriously also high humid weather exhausts the commuters. Sticking in traffic is still better than breathing polluted air and sweating all time while waiting for the train.... Sigh... These are the reasons why most of residents rely on cars or bikes.
