That quote is taken out of context in this video. In the documentary this is from, he says that after explaining that his drawing skill started slipping as he got older.

thats true, i can draw but at times i always criticised my works everytime i finished them. sometimes you would never felt the limited of yourself and always have the highest expectations as possible

Without him, One Piece, JoJo, Berserk, Ramna 1/2, Sailor Moon, and a bunch of other manga franchise properties wouldn't exist. A true master!

dont forget the biggest of them all: Dragon Ball! Son-Gokus look is almost directly based on Astro-Boys. He had huge influence on Akira Toriyama

First of all Eiichiro Oda, Hirohiko Araki, Kentaro Miura, Rumiko Takahashi, Naoko Takeuchi didn't took influence on Osamu Tezuka, take a second check

@@brayanargandonaflorentino548 no no you don't get it, if it wasn't for him manga AS A WHOLE wouldn't exist, he started the whole thing of Japanese comics, as well as helping to create the first anime with "Astro Boy"

It's touching to know that Tezuka thought he couldn't draw... Yet I have not seen art as beautiful as his.

I know, right? Not that it really matters, but from what I've read, he had no formal art education. He, instead, had dedication, determination and ideas that are simply wonderful even today. He thought that he couldn't draw, yet he never ever stopped. Gotta think about it.

He had his own art style and that's what makes it stand out. I remember looking at one of his characters called Leo for the first time and thinking "This looks so similar to Astro Boy."

@@cyruscyberdogcyroi8178 Tezuka had a star system similar to Hollywood where one character can appear in many different mangas so to make them appear as actors in a story

I love him so much. I wish I had met him.

This man has so much energy to draw, make Mangas and animes while I don't have energy to draw much anymore even though I'm 17.. I feel like im never gonna make my own animation or manga in the future because I don't draw as much as I used to. I liked to draw and make manga as a child I would make tons of it until I started to take digital drawing and then slowly become less and less motivated.

It's important to find a way early on in your artistic career to focus on your artistic journey without comparing yourself to others, especially the masters. Everyone has their own unique perspective as an artist and it's that feature that will sustain your journey, not being as good as the mangaka to your left. Good luck little friend! Well, if you're enjoying what you're doing, you should never have to feel burdened by the responsibility of learning to draw. There is no secret. There is no gift. Consistency is the only requirement. You will be consistent if you get enjoyment out of the act of drawing itself rather than solely for the purpose of making manga or learning digital art. Cave paintings were drawn with fingers and pigments. Carvings were done with hammer and chisel. It's as simple as that. Beauty, technique, proportion, anatomy, perspective... All of these will fall in place once you start loving the act of drawing. And to love the act, you need to love what you draw. Comparing your work with works of stalwarts is an easy recipe for failure. SEE what great artists draw. LOVE what you draw. Do not compare

maybe go back to traditional art? I know that I prefer traditional art way more than digital. i love my traditionally drawn comics, my digital comics feel empty.

I assume that when he says that he can't draw and agonizes over it he actually means it. At some point of learning a skill everybody finds out what their shortcomings are. I guess he knows what he draws is not of at full potential? Oh how much I wish to see what he thought of as a perfect creation in his mind.

Not sure if I'm looking into this too much but in Japanese culture it is more within the culture to downplay your talent. It's considered good to show humility. Which may be why Tezuka says he can't draw.

While it's no secret that Japan has a prevalent work culture and sense of humility, it's much more likely that he experiences a deep rooted sense of self-criticism that applies to every artistic field.

It would have just been called a drawing desk. These days models like these that are fixed are hard to find. You can find adjustable ones by searching for table top drawing desk.

Well, he needed to draw 20 pages everyday to meet the deadlines. That means, he only had 1 to 3 hours of sleep everyday. Watch the full documentary which shows him drawing the whole day without sleeping at all. You can find on KZread titled Osamu Tezuka documentary.
