TEXTILE TALK: Smithsonian American Art Museum: Subversive, Skilled, Sublime-Fiber Art by Women

Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery: Subversive, Skilled, Sublime-Fiber Art by Women, presented by SAQA
--
Mary Savig will provide a sneak peek at the Renwick Gallery's upcoming exhibition, Subversive, Skilled, Sublime: Fiber Art by Women. This project draws on archival and oral history recordings to amplify the voices and personal backstories of participating artists. All artworks are from the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery. Along those lines, Savig will also share details of some major new acquisitions.

Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt: "a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure."
Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, SAQA now has over 4,000 members: artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators, and corporate sponsors. With access to our museum-quality exhibition program, SAQA members challenge the boundaries of art and change perceptions about contemporary fiber art.
As a part of SAQA’s dynamic creative community, members can take their artwork and career to the next level. We offer a wide range of exclusive resources, mentorship programs, and professional opportunities.
In addition, SAQA documents the art quilt movement - our publications include full-color exhibition catalogs, the Art Quilt Quarterly magazine, and books like Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 Years of Innovation, and the Exploring Art Quilts with SAQA series.

I loved this preview of the coming show in DC. I would love to see it! I especially like the idea of video capturing in the future the various artists and their drive to express emotions within their works and why they choose the fiber they used. I would also like to know what is considered fiber? Would it include fur, feathers, seaweed and other such items? Sheron Mehl

Sheron--good question. Different people and organizations would have different answers! SAQA leaves it very open-ended and accepts all types of materials as long as the work fits our definition of the art quilt: "a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure."
