Ben Sachs The game, internally, checks your split times. Every 300 levels or so, the game checks if you reached the next checkpoint at least two seconds later than the previous one, and levels increase for every placed piece and every line cleared. Playing "slower" means waiting for the pieces to fall on their own instead of dropping them, clearing less lines, etc., in order to trick the game into expecting longer splits, but not playing slow enough that the game boots you out mid-game for "being too slow".

You can tell that by the time the invisible credits came on, beneath the banter he had with his friend: he was giving it his all. All that energy built up and how it led to him almost losing the whole run by choking, only coming out once he won. Like his whole life depended on this one run - go GM or give it all up. This dude made HISTORY. He has accomplished an ultimate gaming feat that I'm very confident in saying that very, very few of us here will never get close to reaching. I sincerely hope he's living an awesome life right now. After almost a decade leading up to this I think he's absolutely earned it.

This actually makes me kinda interested in playing this game. I doubt I could ever make Master rank let alone GM, but it looks fun and a good way to hone reflexes and memory.

Red Mck Try MasterO or MO grade. I think it's the lowest in the MasterX grades.

I have no clue about all of this, why is he constantly saying he is to fast and then waiting a bit?

One of the requirements to trigger the invisible credit roll is to get all the COOLs throughout the game. Basically the game keeps track of your time from x00-x70 in each 100 level section; if you're more than 2 seconds slower than your previous x00-x70, you don't get the little "COOL" text and don't get the 100-level speed curve increase plus extra grade that comes with it. If you miss any of the cools, you simply get a fading credit roll instead of the purely invisible one. Consequently, I had to be conscious as to how fast I was playing to prevent myself from setting up an almost impossible COOL time to beat in the next section. It's best when playing conservatively to build a little "buffer time" into each section so that if you make a bad mistake, you can simply play faster to catch up and get the COOL.

+KevinDDR This was super helpful, I thought this was a completely shitty game. Now that it looks more than arbitrary, I can understand the prestige to beating the challenges.

This is the video that fuelled me to ask “What Japanese arcade games have been spotted in western regions?”. I’m hoping to find some Japanese arcades cabinets within Canada without having to travel far to Japan which I want to do but not for a long time.
