This is test which is done for patients especially when male partner is facing unexplained infertility. Commonly couples ask questions that even all the parameters are normal , why is that we are not able to conceive ? May be Sperm DNA fragmentation holds that answer. Let us first know what is DNA fragmentation index.
What is DNA Fragmentation Index? (Male fertility test)
Human sperm is a very specialized cell. The human sperm has minimal cytoplasm and it has very compact DNA. The structure of sperm includes head, neck, body and the tail. The DNA is concentrated in the sperm head. In this we are trying to get assessment to how strong this DNA is
One of the most important thing a patient should remember as far as DNA fragmentation testing index is concerned is how is the test being reported. It is very important that DNA fragmentation slide is made correctly. If the slide is well prepared then the DNA fragmentation index will be well documented which will help the patient to get meaningful treatment.
Any DFI value more than 25 is considered to be abnormal and any value less than 25 is considered normal.It is a very difficult test and it requires an expert doctor because the preparation of slide is exceedingly important in order to identify Sperm DNA Fragmentation Index correctly. It sperm DFI can be done with the computer-assisted programme as well which is the best way of detecting and declaring Sperm DNA Fragmentation Index of any male partner.
