    Think back to 1987 and Gene Roddenberry’s vision. Enterprise D wasn’t a warship. It was an exploration vessel with significant armaments and shields. The ships that succeeded her had the benefits of being built for a different purpose and the latest weapons technology. If I were going on a five year mission,I’d want to live on Enterprise D. If the Federation was at war, I’d want to be on Enterprise E! Renaming the USS Titan to Enterprise G does make SOME sense. The crew of the Enterprise D just saved the galaxy. Again. Captain Riker once commanded the USS Titan. And they wanted to honor Gene Roddenberry with the “G”, which goes all the way back to TNG’s debut in 1987 (“D” was almost “G”, but they realized that the timeframe was too short). It all works for me. USS Enterprise G is a fine “hero ship”. However, I actually expected the Titan to be renamed in honor of Captain Shaw. Of course, that would assume he’s actually dead. And we don’t want that. Commodore Shaw, please. Todd Stashwick was GREAT in Picard S3. Not for nothin’ - I’d be VERY AFRAID of ANY starship piloted by post-Daystrom Institute DATA. The Enterprise D went on quite a rampage through that Borg cube in Picard S3 “Last Generation”. Data’s flying enabled Dr. Crusher to dish-out considerable mayhem from the Tactical station. As a Trekkie, it was great to see the TNG crew in total “boss mode”. Disney’s Star Wars franchise has been completely destroyed by studio infighting and lousy writing. It’s time for Star Trek’s triumphant return with ST: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Legacy. With Captains Pike and Seven of Nine in command, the Star Trek franchise FINALLY has a bright future again.

    TNG Nth Degree shows Galaxy doesn't need a heavy physical upgrade to be more powerful. Geordi increases power to the phasers (likely enough to match 1 photon torpedo) because that's what was estimated needed to destroy the probe. Ultimately 3 torpedoes destroyed the probe but shields were enhanced to 3x. 300% but required to drop out of warp to do it. So galaxy only needs a warp core upgrade like that of the Sovereign and likely it would be just as powerful. That episode tells us alot. Power is the limiting factor in these ships not the technology

    if you consider what potential a War Galaxy class really has due to its modular designe, it is just sad that it never got represented that way. The Galaxyclass could house several defiant class warp and energy generators in the saucersection, with upgraded mainframes and neuro packs. With this in mind a galaxyclass would if fitted accordingly rip through most things with ease even the E wouldnt stand a chance. the inner volume of the D is about 1.5 to 1.8 times the volube of the Es and most of it was empty to begin with.

    Given the Galaxy used the older Type-X phasers, whereas the Sovereign had the Type-XII, the Sovereign had hull-hugging, regenerative shields, fourteen phaser arrays, four rear photon and 3 fore photon, and the quantum torpedo launcher, plus it was far more maneuverable (The Sovereign can, theoretically, lose zero performance with the loss of one of its two drives, and the RCS Arrays on the Sovereign were the same ones used on the Galaxy, with each of the 35 thruster quads generating 4.5 million newtons of thrust despite the Sovereign being nearly 1.25 million metric tons lighter, about 100 meters shorter in height, and about half the width) and had the ablative armor... It'd be a big lift to uprate the Galaxy class to match it. Realistically, the Sovereign should be able to run circles around the Galaxy class... and in fact should maneuver closer to something like an Akira class. Not bad at all for a multi-mission explorer :D

    The Galaxy was a glass cannon for its size, for a ship as imposing in dimensions it wasn't very strong. HOWEVER, it was still a powerful vessel in general as it was a technologically advanced platform and we see that it packed enough of a punch that even races which used fully fledged warships dealt with it rather cautiously....it wasn't some easily dismissed ship that could just be steamrolled. I imagine the Dominion War era Galaxies, stripped of their peacetime sandbagging (*cough* civilians and most scientific stuff) and properly armored would've been very formidable.

(Just beneath her antimatter storage) (1). -5.One array on each wing, facing outside (2). -6.Two arrays behind battle bridge (2). -7.Four arrays surrounding her aft torpedo launcher (two on dorsal & duplicated for the ventral side) (4). The E's (pre nemesis version) and Sovereign have slightly less array than D's. Most of its emplacement are identical to the Galaxy's ,but point 3 and 7 are missing in E/Sovy's, due to difference in wing and neck design. I don't have E model during Nemesis, so i have no idea where the additional four phasers emplacement are. I never understood how a "secondary shield grid" was of much benefit. The problem with shielding is the power requirement, they take a beating because they are being drained of power. If you have a secondary warp core providing power to defensive systems while your primary warp core is driving your phasers, you stand to do much better in a firefight than if you just have two shield grids pulling from the same power system. They figured this out when they figured out how to house two warp cores safely.

    The sovereigns are lean-mean purpose built battleships. Type XII phasers as opposed to Type X, many torpedo launchers, twice as powerful warp core. Most importantly, and something neglected by Starfleet until the Borg incident, is carrying armor. Add all that plus incorporating the computer breakthroughs and voila! A ship twice as powerful as the Galaxy. But don't sleep on the Galaxy. It can fling more torpedoes than almost any ship. It is big and has a warp core and reactors powerful enough to make their phaser array more powerful than any other ship equipped with Type Xs. And that was before the DW. The DW refits are considerably more powerful than the stock Galaxy. Probably 75% of the Sovereign with the survivability being the only major difference.

  • @DrewLSsix

    @DrewLSsix

    I dont think they neglected to include armor, they didn't have armor that was worth anything. The doctrine of the last century seemed to be that shields and weapons were so much more powerful than material structures that investing in shields was the right thing to do. Even in the 23rd century a ship without shields was going to get chewed up by contemporary weapons. Developing an effective armor system only becomes necessary when an enemy is consistently able to bypass your shields. There's zero incentive to develop the stuff, let alone slap it on every ship in the fleet for who knows how long when there's no use for it. The armor used here isn't simply thicker metal, thay wouldn't work because not only the Borg but most other significant powers starfleet faces can penetrate multiple layers of hull with conventional weapons. The Enterprise gets punched clean through by a Klingon torpedo, that's two layers of hull at least on deck, and a whole ass galley, and it didn't even slow down, so we can assume it could have gone through more material, definitely deep enough into the hull to gut a large part of the ship if it detonated. You can't just add several ships worth of hull plating to every ship just in case, even if it would be effective.

    Here's the thing. Galaxy classes aren't slouches. Starfleet frequently upgrades their ships, meaning that the Galaxy would be upgraded probably in the same year (or close to it) with all the latest technology available to the Sovereign class. Given the Galaxy's overall size and mass, it can easily house the same Warp core, upgraded phaser arrays, shields, quantum torpedoes (using existing launchers would have been enough), computer upgrades, power transfer conduit upgrades, ablative hull alrmour upgrade (if Starfleet uses it - they really should give it to pretty much all their ships to reinforce the hull). At any rate, a galaxy with those upgrades would likely not only be a match for the Sovereign class, but it could potentially overpower it (although in fairness, size in Trek universe means little with technical efficiency... still, if the Galaxy had the same tech as the sovereign, yeah, it would likely be able to match it).

  • @coldbluelight1985

    @coldbluelight1985

    Starfleet is all about upgrading their ships and seems to design them that way. Compare a TMP era Excelsior to the Lakota for example. They're not even in the same universe in terms of performance. Given that the Galaxy class was a huge project for starfleet it's pretty much guaranteed that future upgrades were factored into its base design. I figure a modernized Galaxy would be a roughly equivalent but different type of ship to a Sovereign. The Sovereign would be more of an agile battlecruiser type design with a lot of firepower and good maneuverability where as the Galaxy would be more of a heavy ship of the line. Slower and with similar firepower, but likely a lot more survivability, when things like upgraded shields, power systems and ablative armor got added. If modernized, its primary phaser strips would also likely be the individually most powerful phaser weapons in starfleet, just based on their sheer size.

    Starfleet certainly did upgrade the Galaxy class during its service life - e.g. the Venture refit which featured prominently during the Dominion War on DS9 seemed to be beast, with additional phaser arrays and so on. But I like to think in the case of the restored D, Georgi restored it to its classic TNG spec, because that's the ship HE knew. And a battleship the TNG Enterprise was not. Supporting the "factory spec" hypothesis, the Enterprise shown in S3 of Picard did not sport the expanded Bridge layout seen in Generations, suggesting he was restoring the ship to an earlier spec.

    The last epoch had great parts and terrible ones. The good: Seeing the D fly and fight again. Actually lighting on the D. The poker scene. No major character dying. Old school Trek ships like the Sovereign and Akira on screen. Finally get to see ships fire phasers and quantums. Q returns. The bad: Made no sense that the D could fly into the Cube. Unless this is some sort of fusion cube, the scale and the gaps in her structure make no sense. I feel like a writer was a fan of Star Wars Return of the Jedi where they took out the Death Star this way and wanted to see the Trek version. Same with the old Star Trek experience in Las Vegas with the D hovering overhead. The Titan was clearly important enough to give it an A. That's kind of insulting to rename her. Obviously done for budget and feels reasons as a new gen G would cost more. Wish the D would have remained in service with Captain Seven. It's a much nicer ship and better built set than the Titan. Made no sense how Spacedock Probert Edition was rebuilt so quickly. Would have rather seen the OG Spacedock towed to Earth and used again, which makes more sense considering what must have been a considerable loss of life and ships in the battle to save Earth. Made no sense the Borg were in that bad of shape after Voyager. The Queen assimilated the pathogen thus she also assimilated how to cure it. Even if the Borg were banged up, this was just weird. Whoopie should have been in the final bar scene. Miles O'Brien should have been involved.

    While the most powerful ship of its time, the Galaxy class was built with a bias for exploration. It housed state of the art scientific equipment, and went to great lengths to incorporate quality of life features such as recreation facilities and schools, to accommodate the crew and their onboard families. It came from a time with a completely different philosophy to that of the Sovereign, which paid a lot more attention to defensive and offensive capabilities in light of the Borg threat at the time of its development. The Galaxy could get a refit of course, to balance things out. But if you're comparing the Enterprise D to the Enterprise E, this is probably a pretty decent simulation of their combat capabilities.

    I feel like the 1701D and the later post Dominion War Galaxy Class ships are two entirely different beasts. Theres zero reason to believe that the DW variant wouldn't have received the same weapon types as the sovvy in their wartime refit configuration, and it was a larger, tankier ship. Of course the D would lose to the E, but a wartime Galaxy was still a capital ship and utterly ferocious. Wartime Galaxies were more of a slow moving battleship of a capital ship, whereas sovvy was a faster, more maneuverable, expeditionary battlecruiser of a capital ship.

    I believe the DW refit Galaxy Class in-universe had Type XII phaser arrays installed to replace the Type Xs. Or at least the major arrays (dorsal, ventral on the Saucer, ventral under drive section, after strips). I think the launchers were refitted to handle quantums too. So, as the RBG refit demonstrates, the DW refit Galaxy had about 90% of the firepower of the Sovereign, but, even with the upgraded shields, additional reactors and application of some ablative armor, the hull and space-frame simply weren't as robust as the Sovereign and the ship probably only had 60-75% of the survivability. If you know your WWII ship classes, the difference between the Galaxy Refit and Sovereign is like the difference between the North Carolina Class and the Iowa Class. Hell, the stock Galaxy is analogous to the King George V Class, the epitome of the Treaty Battleship with only 14 inch guns and pretty thin armor for a battleship.

Sovereign has 8 effective aft firing arrays. Galaxy has 12 total arrays. The Bow Stardrive array is blocked by the docked saucer. None of Galaxy's other arrays are blocked. Galaxy has 9 effective aft firing arrays Galaxy is a better platform for phasers. Sovereign has a lot of problems because the designer was rushed. 1.The Quantum torpedo launcher sits on the deck of the Captains yacht. No mechanism at all could fit there. 2.The separation plane is impossible as shown. 3. The Star Drive lacks Impulse engines for separation and bow thrusters, 4. Until ST: Nemesis the entire ship lacked aft firing torpedoes or aft firing phasers on the Stardrive. 5.The Arrow head structure represents a strange design where the deck is either slanted or merely a huge vaunted ceiling for the decks below but whatever it is, it's not useable space. 6. Despite being from the same error there is no discernable sensor array...anywhere.

    In my opinion, 1 standard Galaxy and 4 Kvort win against 2 Romulan Warbirds, further I assume 1 Standard Galaxy and 1 Kvort are equal to 1 Warbird. 1 Standard Galaxy should maybe win against 2 Kvort , but loose against 3 Kvort, so 1 Standard Galaxy might be 2 Kvort and a Warbird 3 Kvort. I speculate that 1 Dominion War refit Galaxy is equal to 1 probably Dominion war Warbird at 3,5 Kvort because of Dominion War advances. First Contact Sovereign (pre Dominion War) should be just slightly stronger than the Dominion war refit Galaxy at 4 Kvort. Nemesis refit Sovereign should be clearly stronger than the refit Galaxy, maybe the same way the Warbird is over the Standard Galaxy. So a Nemesis Sovereign could be between 4,5 and 5 Kvort. So a Nemesis Sovereign is equal to 2 Standard Galaxy and maybe 1 Kvort or equal to 1 Standard Galaxy and 1 pre dominion war Warbird. (advances for Kvorts are of course not considered for easy comparison). I know that this is not a correct way of comparison, but this is how it works according to my fantasy at least.

  • @saquist

    Note: I have not completed a full analysis of Sovereigns weapons....but we do know both galaxy and Sovereign sport Type 10 phasers but Sovereign has more available power to get closer to type 10's max output. Sovereign has weaker phaser arcs. Quantum torpodes aren't really much more powerful than photons. Not to mention Galaxy can fire photons faster than Sovereign becuase tubes are superior to short barrel turrets. Their warp cores are the difference. Galaxy was likely updated to a dual input manifold as suggested in Booby Trap TNG. Leah Brahms says this increases power by 14%. Sovereign like Defiant has multiple streams entering the reactor. Defiant has 5. Sovereign has 7. So given the core is the same volume and length as Galaxies only with 6 additional streams...that comes to 84% more power for shields and weapons. And since Sovereign is a smaller ship its safe to say it's 2x the Firepower of the Galaxy in shields and phaser output.

Think about it. Sovereigns Warp core at best estimate is only putting out 185% the power of a Galaxy class. If you can power a phaser at 3x more why make another phaser type. Same thing for Voyager just taking what we know. Voyager is type 10. It just doesn't have the power to max it out.
