This is just awful; just consider the 100's of thousands of truck/bus driving and delivery jobs that will be lost. And when there is a malfunction and someone gets taken out, I presume Renault will be on the hook for $10's of millions. Any lawyer worth his money will sue this company into the bankruptcy, and so they should.

Assuming that in the future everyone has autonomous cars, it is very likely that driving manually will be illegal. One of the main reasons that car companies are introducing autonomous vehicles is to reduce traffic accidents, numbers of casualties with the intent of increasing overall public road safety. Humans, on the other hand, are error-prone, so it's only a matter of time until you will no longer be permitted to drive manually.

in the future no one needs a drivers licence anymore and u even dont have to buy a car anymore... u just order (with a app) a car and pay like 0,10-0,20€ per km and the system automatically distributes cars to locations where it is needed ^^ u can set a routine so the car comes 7 am to your house and after work it waits for u to carry u home... so basically citys will have giant parking garages where the cars wait for a order and charge...

Edit: Like Level 1 would do auto-braking, Level 2 could stay in lane and switch lanes when you indicate + lvl1, Level 3 is lvl2 + speed regulation maybe, Lvl4 is basically full auto pilot, Lvl5 you wouldn't even need the steering wheel.

This is inherently the issue. They rely on tech outside of the car, which means we need to put expensive tech on every road for this to work. Telsa relies on mostly cameras, which are cheap, and learns to drive like a human does, by observing the environment around it and making adjustments, without any external assistant to guide. Just like the super cruise, this tech is limited. Autopilot and other AI based driving systems are the future of autonomous driving.

  • @DavidMulderOne

It's very easy to demonstrate stuff, it's far harder to get it to work reliably. That's why the whole industry doesn't take Tesla seriously in this, as they literally aren't even on the level most other companies were years ago. Tesla bet that solid state lidar would not become cheap and that vision AIs would improve significantly... instead solid state lidar is becoming more and more of a thing and vision AI has been improving only very minimally. And Tesla not being taken seriously is not even because Tesla is an "outsider" totraditional car companies, as Waymo is taken *very* seriously. if anything you should look at two indicators: The distance a company drives autonomously outside of highways (as that's childs play for all) and the number of disengagements. And that's a pack that Waymo is leading. Right now they are driving more than 40000 km a day. And right now - whilst testing new features and situations - Waymo has a disengagement rate of once per 50000 km.
