Testing the NEW Pitchable Propellers in Stormworks

Ойындар

In this video, 454ss examines the new pitchable propellers in Stormworks to see how they work and how they compare to the existing propellers!

Even the titan propeller (old propeller that was removed some time after 1.0 update that was 2-3 times bigger than the giant propeller) is smaller than the large pitchable propeller.

I like that the “medium” pitched prop is basically a half size larger than the large prop. It’ll fit perfectly on some of my boats.

I'm reminded by your video of the issue of not being able to quantify or make much sense of the game's own metrics such as force and "torque" (not) and how it has plagued us for eons. I wish we had a reliable way to measure "bollard pull" for example.

I tested using the largest motor with one propellor on a large barge and there are speed differences, though the difference is smaller. The old small propellor gave me 6 m/s while the small pitchable one gave me 6.3 m/s for 4 blades, 5.3 m/s for 2 blades, and 6.6 m/s for 8 blades, all with max blade pitch. I believes blade counts does have effects on how much the propellor catch the water, but max speed is still limited by the engine power. Like, they could all go the same max speed, but maybe they spun at different RPS at that max speed.

Max pitch is actually not good for speed. Bring it back down to just above 0, you'll gain RPS and soon find the limit of stability of the boat (Had my test craft flying over 100m/s, could barely stay in the water)

Maybe these new propellers will perform better on ships that are actually designed to use them, like container or cruise ships. In fact, you could probably build proper, fully-functioning azimuth thrusters (azipods) with these new propellers.

I will use them. I like the fact you don’t need a gearbox or clutch. I do wish they would add smaller propellers however. I can’t see many people using the big one!

Gearboxes will still need to be used to adjust RPS / Torque, just not for selecting reverse.

I think the large ones will be used for giant steam ships, just because you can make it have 2 blades

If they plan to keep the original propellers in the game, they should make the pitchable propellers better for high torque and the old styled propellers better for high speed.

I think the new propellers have the small hitbox so you can make a close "duct" like those already ducted ones

does anyone else think it's somewhat weird that the large pitchable propeller is weaker than the giant propeller despite being so much larger?(and can have more blades too)

Not sure what can be done with the modular engine challenge if we can't use our controller. I like using mine since it's only 1x3. I still haven't seen anybody design one as efficient as mine.

It's a mini build challenge and it's somewhat a Tetris puzzle. So far we have seen some interesting and creative solutions to building a compact engine within a confined space.

I wonder what the thought was behind including such a preposterously large propeller. What realistic use could that be put to in one of the standard shipbuilding slips?

My thinking is that at a low pitch, you will require less torque, requiring you to run at a higher RPS. If you have a high pitch that should require more torque to spin but each spin will move way more water. Not sure if stormworks does this correct

Typical Stormworks update. Half-assed and poorly thought through. It's obvious whoever created the parts just doubled everything (including size) with each step up and didn't even bother to compare it to existing parts.

^ - Exactly this. I lost hope in this game. The more stuff they add bigger the mess that this game becomes. The whole game in need of a despeprate balance pass. But the problem is, they can't do it. If they do it they will break the existing creatons. If they don't do it... well thats what you get. Stuff that makes no sense. We are half leg in the grave with this one. This is why I stopped playing.
