Testing the new hybrid electric engine from Volvo Penta on a Jeanneau NC 37

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Position out in the archipelago of Gothenburg and Krossholmen, where Volvo Pentre have their headquarters and test station. I have been privileged to test drive the new hybrid electric engine on this prototype from Volvo Penta and Beneteau group.
This boat has a standard twin D4 combustion engine with an electric Motor coupled to a flywheel between the engine and the outdrive much like a pedal bike. It spins up the flywheel and can recapture power as well as distribute it via the electric motor into the battery bank.
This enables the boat to give a very quiet drive in speed sub 1500 rpm and up to 10 knots speed in electric mode Range depends on speed and the sea conditions, but a range of three hours can be achieved at 5 knots. 60KW electric motor, 20KW onboard charging with 9 batteries producing 67KWh. I found the electric force of system responsive and easy to use especially in docking mode and having the backup of the engine in combustion mode allowed for high-speed performance, charge of the batteries and ability to have the range without the anxiety.
This combination is dual purpose. Perfect for coming to port on the electric power and having the range of combustion engines. The quietness is exceptional and allows you to hear everything around you which in such a beautiful place is very special.

I'm assuming this is based on their work with Greenline Yachts. This looks like the same hybrid system they put in the Greenline yachts.

Are the batteries stored in the 3rd/storage cabin?

Yes, but I wouldn’t call it a cabin on the NC37, It’s just the storage locker which you can sleep a person in if they don’t mind being in a very small space.

@@robatlanticyachts9046 yes indeed. Always strange what they did there. versus the 1095, not putting a door on. Not that there was loads of room on the 1095 either. Apart from the head layout, inboard/outboard versions (and a bit more finesse for the NC)
