A string trimmer, also called a weed eater, weed whacker, weedwacker, weed whip, line trimmer, brush cutter, whipper snipper (in Australia, Canada, and South Africa) or strimmer (in the UK and Ireland), is a garden tool for cutting grass, small weeds, and groundcover. It uses a whirling monofilament line instead of a blade, which protrudes from a rotating spindle at the end of a long shaft topped by a gasoline engine or electric motor.
String trimmers are commonly used for cutting low foliage near obstacles or on steep or irregular terrain.
History
The string trimmer was invented in the early-1970s by George Ballas of Houston, Texas, who conceived the idea while watching the revolving action of the cleaning brushes in an automatic car wash. His first trimmer was made by attaching pieces of heavy-duty fishing line to a tin can bolted to an edger. Ballas developed this into what he called the "Weed Whacker", since it chewed up the grass and weeds around trees.
Design
A string trimmer works on the principle that a line spun fast enough on its center stiffens by centrifugal force; the faster the hub turns, the more rigid the line. Even round-section nylon line is able to cut grass and slight, woody plants quite well. Some monofilament lines designed for more powerful cutters have an extruded shape, like a star, that helps the line slash the material being cut; the line is thus able to cut quite large woody plants (small shrubs) or at least girdle them effectively. These lines make solid disks less necessary for tough jobs.
The line is hand-wound onto a reel before the job is started, leaving both ends extending from the reel housing. The motor turns the reel and the line extends horizontally while the operator swings the trimmer about where the plants are to be trimmed. The operator controls the height at which cutting takes place and can trim down to ground level quite easily.
As the line is worn, or breaks off, a bump feed string trimmer the operator knocks the reel on the ground so a release mechanism allows some of the line in the reel to replace the spent portion. Newer models "auto-feed", where a small cutter ensures the exposed length does not exceed what can be swung efficiently. Newly extended line operates more efficiently because of its heavier weight and surface effects. The speed of the spinning hub is controlled by a trigger activated throttle on the handle.
A fixed line style string trimmer head
A fixed line string trimmer has a trimmer head that takes pre-cut line inserts. There is no wound spool of line in the trimmer head, the user instead feeds the pre-cut line in to the appropriate slots, making the trimmer easier to feed line into and troubleshoot than a bump feed system.
For vertical cutting the whole machine can be tilted or some trimmers allow the head to be adjusted at different angles.
String trimmers powered by an internal combustion engine have the engine on the opposite end of the shaft from the cutting head, while electric string trimmers typically have an electric motor in the cutting head, but there are other arrangements such as where the trimmer is connected to heavy machinery and powered by a hydraulic motor.
The head contains a safety shield on the user side and a rotating hub which may also be called a head or spool. Disadvantages of a gasoline-powered string trimmer include its greater weight, the need to refuel, and the significant vibration that carries throughout the device, both of which interfere with its maneuverability and contribute to muscle fatigue. Advantages include complete mobility and higher maximum power.
Large trimmers, used for cutting thick roadside grass and weeds in large areas, are both heavier and more powerful. Some are fitted with a harness to spread weight onto the shoulders. Often referred to as brush cutters, these often mount straight or circular metal blades instead of monofilament line.
Accessories
Many string trimmers allow the hub, the head or the lower part of the shaft to be replaced with accessories. Common accessories include:
metal or plastic blades
a small chain saw
a toothed hedge trimmer
a cultivator
Quick-release shafts are offered on many newer models which do not require any tools to switch in accessories.

After fighting for YEARS with gas-powered this and that, I turned to electric--leaf blower (I vac up the leaves for mulch), shrub/pruning shears, and, yes, weed-eater. I went with Black and Decker and have been pleased, more with some than others. This looks perfect for us little old ladies who are still getting out there and doing our own lawn care because we are very picky about our lawns! Nice video, and I'm glad you didn't totally dis SunJoe.

I own a SunJoe electric pressure washer, and I am MORE than impressed/happy with it, came with accessories, works so much better than expected, nice sturdy cart . MUCH nicer than the one it replaced (Craftsman). I was so happy/impressed with the SunJoe pressure washer, I bought a SunJoe Steamer, and it also is so much better/nicer than I expected. I no longer consider SunJoe "second rate" equipment. Seem like this low buck string trimmer does just fine when you consider its price!

I can totally see someone who isn't able to lift/carry much, would have a very small yard to maintain, doesn't have the want have gas powered items in the household, and for its pricepoint to warranty, makes this an item worth considering.

Sometime in the later '90s I bought my first blower and got a corded Toro Ultra 225. I used it mostly for blowing leaves (a lot of leaves) off the roof and gutters, then away from the house. I used it for the next ten years until I got a Husq 2-stroke and finally an EGO. Even though the Toro at least twice fell off the roof, one time end-on on the blower end and another, one story to a wood deck. Nothing some Gorilla tape couldn't fix. I still have it in the back of the garage and it still works well. The Husq and the EGO, I always wear the strap. I don't think either would survive one fall. Poodles, but hard-working. The plastic on that sounded solid and durable.

We own a corded and a cordless trimmer similar to this. They are Parkside brand from Lidl (a supermarket here in Europe). My mother uses them for trimming around flowerbeds and general small scale maintainance when I am not around to do it with the gas powered one. She likes using them as they are mutch faster than doing it with hand tools and she doesn't have to deal with gasoline in the process. I would definetly recommend buying one with a battery tough. The cheap ones are underpowered but useable and less power means less damage to fragile plant stems and flowerpots in case you hit them accidentally.

Hi Brad. Loved the tongue-in-cheek review. Just a note, the trimmer line advances automatically when you let the trimmer head stop spinning and start again. I have a Ryobi battery trimmer with the same functionality. You can hear a faint “click” as the head spins down which is some sort of clutch that lets out a little more line with each “click”.

The older Worx 18v trimmer I had did the same thing. It’s pretty clever, never had a problem with it. There is definitely a place for these smaller, lighter-duty string trimmers, and a better brand like Worx or Ryobi will do fine. My dad is in his 70’s and has shoulder problems, and he would have problems with my bigger EGO trimmer, let alone a gas trimmer.

  • @chadstansbury2267

@@3Dsjk Agreed. My Ryobi trimmer has been chugging along just fine for 3 summers now with no sign of stopping. I have about a .26 acre lot but the 40v battery gets heavy after a bit. These lightweight corded electric trimmers are great for people on a small budget, or with small yards, or with less strength. The extension cord is an added expense, but at 2.8A you don’t need the more expensive 12GA extension cords.

This was really quite an interesting review. Despite at the ergonomic flaws that this may have, the unit did do what was advertised. And for $20 that’s pretty good. I agree this thing is definitely not for everybody however i do think there is another segment of people who this could work for. That would be people who are just beginning to really take care of their lawn. Maybe they have only ever used a mower but now they want to take there lawn game up a step. This would be a decent first weed wacker. They could edge their sidewalk and driveway and just make the place look that extra bit nicer. If they like it, great then they can invest in a nicer unit. If not then they’ve only spent $20, no biggie. Anyway just another perspective on possible consumer bases. Thanks again for a great video 👍🏻

The head on that is an auto feed string head. as the line gets shorter the head rpm increases to a point a weight in the head shifts that "button" over and the line extends the next time that the motor slows. IMO they are a pain in the rear and not worth the money. However when it breaks and if the motor is still good it is a decent high speed universal motor for High speed projects

The problem with most battery trimmers - and most battery power tools - is they lure you in with a cheap price up front, with the small print that says, 'battery and charger not included.' You pay more for the battery in many cases. If I were to recommend a trimmer I'd go with 'Ryobi'. They make decent electric tools.

I realize this isn't the trimmer you would pick out. However, some people may want one for very light weigh trimming. I mean you could just get a scissors and cut as well. It just depends on what you want. But it does the job all the same... There are a lot of people that are not going to spend $300, $400, or $500 dollars on a much better string trimmer to trim their yard. There is a market for every type and price range...believe it!

Your package shows a UPS label... so unless your area is different than all the locations I've lived (none being Florida).... then it is probably more so shipping "care and handling"... if it was already used... then you would not have had most of the papers and "stuff"

I wonder how much profit is for the manufacturer. How much money does it take to produce one? How much profit is for the retailer? I think this tool goes out the factory for less than $5

Brad is that your home address on the shipping label in the beginning of the video? Might want to try to blur that out or something!

Good point! That being said, anyone who wants my address has about a dozen different ways to get it. One of the disadvantages of having a legitimate company😂

I have got something similar, abit older, from siemens. It works, but I have to use both hands on that thing, and it kills my back after a few minutes. Also the line is trash. Want a proper one, but it is abit pricy.

I’m surprised they couldn’t add a 5” extender piece for slightly taller people. I’m assuming they’re making it for shorter women who need to maintain a little section. I’m still having a hard time imagining what kind of lawn would warrant such a tiny machine.

Sandra, my thoughts exactly. I'm 5'8" and that thing would kill my back! I have a Portland 12" electric (corded) trimmer that I have used the heck out of! My son-in-law has a Ryobi battery operated trimmer/edger that I really like, except when the damn battery dies! 1🙄😏

@@krissgross2335 The standard battery that comes with some of these power tools are so under powered, but cost a fortune to get a decent one. I have a Dewalt battery powered trimmer and blower. I managed to find a 20v 10ah that makes it suitable enough to use. Although I still have a Ryobi gas powered trimmer for when I need to tackle the whole yard in the spring.

The advertisement that came on after your video used your pressure washing videos to advertise this plastic head you screw onto a hose that “does the same as a pressure washer” lol anyways I thought you should know and it was to fast for me to get the name of the add sorry

You need to mention, the stupid carburetor setup some of them have or the gas-oil mixture. Ive seen some helpless ladies pulling on a 2-stroke Weed Eater and cannot get it to start, or its stupid hard to pull. Im loving my dewalt, battery wacker, but after a while it does make your arms sore.
