@@tROCKxBitE I have all three and I recommend the Gerber/ Fisker camp ax. Preferably with the longer handle. The main reason is better materials. Both the steel and the plastic are much better.

The payment per hour is low, in many western countries most of the price value come from work hour. In a third world country or China, the work value isn’t high which make them cheap. If the same axe is made in The US I bet it won’t be just 17 but something at least double the price. For example, you can have your pc fixed with just 3 US dollar in those countries while it will cost you several hundred just for the work hours alone.

​@@jackmccoy7435 The U.S used to make those kinds of things. But the reason production moved over to China in the first place was to save money. If manufacturing is going to come back to the U.S, they'll either have more expensive products, or need to develop cheaper manufacturing. That'd probably require political intervention (because people wont tolerate paying more for things unless they're forced to) or automation getting good enough that the cost of labor stops mattering so much. Or I guess wages in the U.S could collapse. At which point hey, the U.S can start exporting stuff to China!

@@frostden in scale production labor is not as huge of a factor as may be expected. Really a major barrier is the large amount of capital that needs to be dropped on tooling and equipment (modern equipment capable of functioning with energy [which is cost] efficiency) and the fact that that investment does not see immediate returns. Additionally the tighter regulatory environment makes setting up some things more difficult if not impossible with numerous legal hurdles, some of which make total sense from a safety perspective, and some of which become absurdly pedantic

I've had the exact same hatchet for 2 years now and as a matter of fact was using it yesterday to split kindling, never ever been sharpened and still going strong ! Best $20 I've spent in a very long time and I'm being 100% honest about this.

I drive with a SMLE ( Lee Enfield ). The stipulation is to keep it out of sight (a case, blanket etc). No fragile .223 projectiles those West Coast AR-15 boys use, the .303 just keeps going.

I bought that hatchet for my son on a flash sale for $10.99. I did some work on the sheath to make it fit tighter. It actually isn't bad and well worth it for a beginner!

good ol grip tape. Never used it but black cloth tape never failed me lol

My GF and I camped at a primitive spot in NM, near Silvercity for three weeks. We used the cheap Fiskar version of this hatchet to chop of a log that was 4 feet long and two feet in diameter for firewood. The hatchet took a beating but it got the job done. We would have been awfully cold without it!

A couple of minutes adjusting the set on that saw would make a world of difference and wouldn't be too hard to do.

Great video. I forget your great Bushcrafting skills. I work with some 11-13 year old boys and this looks like a great incentive/reward for them in the goal setting learning we are trying to teach them.

Can you test a swiss military surplus hachet it is sold on sportsman guide and can be had for around 20 bucks I would like to see how that stacks up against the budget hatchets

Same here. Although my set is from a brand called Robens and it is in all black. Saw isn't really useful, but overall it's a nice package for the price.

Great Video! always good content. A tip on using the firesteel tho - instead of holding the firesteel still and pushing the knife, try hold the knife still close to the firebase and pull the firesteel back. It´s much easier to aim, sparks gets closer to the firebase and you have a ton more control over it! Cheers from Sweden

Yeah its just a standard 5.56 ar15, just a normal semi auto rifle. Still a nice firearm, but not full auto, no full auto firearms made after 1986 can be owned by civilians. Only pre 1986 can be used, and a theyre expensive af. An uzi could run you 10-15k, so an automatic ar style rifle would be up in the 30's like an m16

I purchased this same Yes for all axe 2 yrs ago, when i 1st read/learned about prepping. I believe that i purchased it for under $30 bucks then. So now its down to $17 bucks? wow. Well i have purchased others since and yes its still intact and going strong, i never thought much of the saw and because the handle is hollow i don't use it in really cold weather. Good review thx for sharing.

I’m really glad to see this my wife bought me one of these a year or two ago to take on fishing trips but I never really used it we traded camping for staying in a cabin but I’m glad to see it’s a decent tool

I bought a survival kit on Amazon that cost about $90. It was Chinese too and I fully expected it to fail. It was one of those that had an axe/hammer, a shovel, a pick/hoe, an ice pick, a whistle, mag starter, a dinky saw, and even came with handle wrap for the 7 handle pieces. I ended up using it for a weeklong primitive campout for my daily firewood cutting. Chopped down and chopped up multiple trees. The shovel worked great as well. The nicest thing was that you could make a long handle on the axe for some serious swing. Made short work. Above all else, the quality was unequaled to much of anything else I've seen. Everything had a tight fit and was perfect. And it all fit in a special 5x10x8in pouch. Other than the tiny saw, it was the perfect kit. But for pure simplicity, this axe is great. For that price you can't afford not to have an extra axe around. I'll probably get one and see if I can adjust the teeth on that saw.

My Fiskars was sharp when I got it and I really like it. But Fiskars/Gerber has always been a pretty good split between quality and price, at least in my experience.

LMAO, story about the guy missing his sleeves and shirt pockets remind's me of my uncle Rick. His wife eventually just decided to stitch on a couple of tear off flaps on the inside of his flannel shirts and gave up trying to fix the pockets when he came back from the bush.

Friend of mine got me an identical axe but the name is wakeman on it. Had it for a few years now and I use it all winter as my kindling hatchet. I've brought it camping to have just in case and while out used it to chop up a downed tree. It took a while as could be expected but it did its job the best it could. Keeps a edge fairly well and is easy to get back to a razor's edge.

Love the axe reviews. Your videos are always very interesting... even to an east coast guy like myself!

I found my axe in a rubbish bin. I have been using it for the past 13 years and it’s been awesome. It’s a vintage axe but it’s awesome

I've seen a few of those where the poll/hammer side is broken off. That is a major weakspot, where the hole is.. It chops pretty well aside of that.

I wonder if upgrading that saw with some kerf would be viable option? With a bit of DIY might be usable. Of course it should be good from package, but if the steel is of decent quality, it still might be useful, and using it wouldn't be so tiresome afterwards. Or replacing it entirely with something that'll fit inside that axe handle. For that price it really seems to be a nice tool.

If you REALLY want to have a good grip I use skateboard grip tape. It's essentially sandpaper with glue on the back. Lots of control but you better have tough hands or you'll get torn up.

same here, it's been a couple years since I got mine. Kept in the car and as he says, damn sharp from the get go!

When the neighbors walk by next week without cuffs and pockets I'll know not to ask...

From the Uk and have always had a bit of interest in these survival videos and camping etc. This recent situation has made me a bit more interested and i have ordered a pcp rifle, and some knives a hatchet/tool , folding saw and shovel and a few books on water filtering and edible wild food. Probably overkill but for the sake of a weeks wages i feel a lot more prepared to look after my family :P

Is there a small axe/hatchet that you would recommend keeping on a sailboat? Something that could possibly be used for defense, but useful for cutting up driftwood for camp fire on the beach.

Having an uncle like Wranglerstar would've greatly improved my quality of life.

Found and bought a small bearded camping hatchet with the hammer on the opposite side of the blade. No frills just a cast iron head with a wooden shaft for 10 bux at a local hardware store here. Gonna modify it to hide a flint and dryer lint inside the handle I think :) kinda like what the old ak47s used to do with their cleaning kits hiding inside the rifle stock

I mean, just like I wouldn't bring my ol' Remington .308 in a firefight, I wouldn't take an AR-15 with an Acog, a canted red dot sight and a flashlight mounted on a DDR to hunt.. (Unless you're hunting small "pests" that you don't mind putting many holes in like hogs and wolves)

1 minute ago. nice. Love the video's man, makes me wanna go outside and chop down a tree. It does look a whole lot like a fiskars. Be carefull hitting ur axe in the tree and then sawing below it. My axe fell down out off the tree from the vibrations and hit my sawblade. Luckily not my arm or head.

I carry the Cold Steel Trail Boss axe and a Silky Pocket Boy in my car. More expensive, but worth it. Nice review. This would be good to have in the back up kit, for sure. Glad you guys had a good time in California. But glad to see you back online as well. Blessings.

I used Fisker's hatchets for years, limbing and cutting small trees...was perfect. His recommendation is on point.

I have had a different version of that for over 7 years that I've used near the gulf and never had any rust so I think out actually might be stainless.

Dude ripped the $300 Spyderco Genzow Hatchethawk as nearly unusable, but he seems pretty pleased with this $20 Amazon hatchet. This is worth thinking about.

Ive had one of these axe saw combos jus like that one for years now and i have used it a fair amount and it has never let me down. For the price its hard to beat.

I have the same set up I bought about 5 years ago...Mine is all black (no yellow) and has no name on it...It seems a decent tool the times I have had it in the woods...Yes the saw sux.

The AR could probably saw the tree better than the actual saw.

Your comments about offset saw teeth reminded me of a life story. My father and both grandfathers were all carpenters. My maternal grandfather was more like a father thaan my own father, often. I used to go on jobs with him as his helper, and have seen him use a nail set to offset the teeth on his Diston handsaw. He would hold it down on the edge of a porch with his foot, or just lay it over a hole and tap alternate teeth off center, then flip it and do the remaining teeth. Good lesson there.

Good and fair review. I agree wooden handles are better for use but they’re not so good for hiding another tool inside and adding grip tape does mitigate the slipperiness. As far as the saw I didn’t see the saw teeth but I’ve put more set in some types of saws (pruning saws) and it has cured binding. My takeaway from this is for much less money than some tool sets and a little work after purchase this could be a decent tool set for emergencies.

Your camera placement is just as satisfying as your craftsmanship!

Used a small axe for splitting logs and kindling I used the same axe for 10yrs solid wood hand and never replaced the axe head always using a sharing stone to keep the blade good and when the handle came lose I set in a bucket of water then let it dry out never bothered with metal axes

Fix the slick handles with the tennis racket wrap. I put that on all my hand tools and it’s a game changer

Nice review. Any thoughts on some Handle tape ( Is it called binding tape?? ) the kind of stuff used on cricket bats and tennis rackets for on plastic handles?

I'd be interested to see how you like it after applying some hand stippling to the handle, and maybe giving the saw a new set to the teeth.
