Testing the 2021 Yamaha FX Cruiser SVHO

Спорт

If you were looking to buy a pwc in 2020, you probably know that they were hard to find. Dealers ran out quickly and even used inventory was at record lows. Your only choice may be to buy a new one. With all of the 2020 model pwc's gone months ago, its time to look at what's new for the 2021 model year. Lets take a look at the Yamaha FX Cruiser SVHO. It offers a luxurious ride while not forgetting that a pwc should be exhilarating and fun to ride. Whether you are a Waverunner, Jet Ski or Sea-Doo fan, this machine is surely worth a look.

Nicely done review. It was really good to see an informative video done by a rider/enthusiast who was not all about the the top end and performance tricks. Hats off to a well done video. I don’t have a PWC yet but hopefully in a year or so. In the meantime I am doing my research. Thanks again.

You know I'm 63 and still love my 2004 Yamaha, they never get old, just more comfortable. Something I know, is out fishing, 30 k off shore and you hit that start button, the mother fuckers is going to burst into life. I still have mine, no-one is going to get her either. I wouldn't change it unless there was no hope for it, and then I would buy another Yamaha. Fishing doesn't require the fastest boat, comfortable ride and handling is paramount, ease of use, and reliability is Yamaha. One day I might have to get a new one, but mine sounds like new, I'm happy, she has served me well.

Hey Capt Frank! Great video and awesome machine, for a Yamaha....coming from a Sea Doo guy! Lisa and I have had our 2014 Sea Doo GTI 155 Limited for almost 6 years, have put 300 hours on it and loved every minute on it. Our longest non stop trip was 86 miles from Richmond to Jamestown and back and we had a couple gallons of gas left, you are right, if you ride conservatively keeping it around 35 mph you can get 100 miles. Crank it up and you might as well have a hole in your gas tank. Even though my ski won't hang with your 70+ mph boat (our's tops out at 60), I'd love to ride with you, either in GA or here in VA. I'm so glad you got one. It is a beautiful machine!

Thanks John. Trust me, I will not be riding balls to the walls most of the time, especially if I am doing a long cruise and need the fuel efficiency. While it is nice to know that you have it when you want it, I see myself doing more cruising in the 35 to 50 mph range. Its just more relaxing and you get a chance to see the surroundings.

@@williamellingsworth1643 Hey William. I got mine from a dealer here in the north Atlanta area. I ordered it as soon as they were able to take orders back in August and it came in in October. I paid MSRP for mine. You are absolutely correct that negotiation is difficult. The demand is so high and the supply so low. They know that if you won't pay full price, someone else will. I definitely advise that you jump on whatever you want now before the situation gets even more difficult. If you can't find a dealer with one in stock, then get on the list and put your order in soon. Good luck with your search.

That rear compartment is actually made for your ski rope for pulling tubes or wake borders. It's made so you can leave your tow rope hooked up to the ski and just put all the rope without having to Unhook. And if you use a sand bag anchor you could store that and the rope inside that. That way when you put the rope away it does not get everything else in your real storage compartments wet.

  • @TheShipsLogg

Thanks Channing. Actually, I did not go into the dealer and pick one. That was my original plan back in early 2020 but pwc's sold out and no one around here had any. I spent months doing research and finally in August, when they started taking orders for the 2021 machine, I called a local dealer and put my order in. It was finally delivered in October. Mine was in the first shipment that the dealer received. They do sell Sea Doos as well but I think I made the right decision for me.

Unlike the 20yr old waverunner I just got rid of the nano hulls are not very durable. Never ride up on the beach. Jump off in 1ft and walk it up. Your review is spot on.

Stay tuned for a video on that in a couple of weeks. Fuel consumption will vary based on a lot of things including the water conditions and how you ride. From what I have seen so far, you will probably get between 5 and 6 mpg if you are out for a nice cruise in smooth water. If you are an aggressive rider, it will be less than that. with an 18.5 gal tank, that means you can go quite a ways. To do a flush after salt water, all you need is a water hose hooked up to a fresh water supply.

I swapped the tow hook for the one from the limited as it's much more convenient for attaching tow ropes and lines in general. Very cool review! Id take that FX and the GP1800 SVHO over anything else. Regrettably I bought a Seadoo and it's a nightmare. I'm ready to buy a couple more skis and some of the electrics as well but my 2021 Seadoo shipped with malfunctioning braking and reverse and other electrical issues leaving me and a child stranded twice, nearly causing a dock collision and 8 months later it's still malfunctioning and can't be ridden. Year warranty almost up and they have my money while I have dangerous garbage and increasing expenses for something that doesn't work. BRP and the dealership (RideNow) have brushed me off and I wasted an entire years vacations with a broke Sea-Doo and tons of unreturned calls and heartache. RideNow kept it for extended periods of time billing for the same warranty repair and ended up damaging the unit on the last repair then test drove it at the lake and brought it back to me with cracked hull mounts, hull seals hanging out, screws hanging out, service compartment broke and the new trailer scraped as well. Other visits had my trailer missing parts that they ended up taking off someone else's in repair right in front of us. BRP(Seadoo) ghosted me for months repeatedly. Basically the same story I hear from others is Seadoo is very unsupportive with their issues. With only 12 months warranty that's risky as I have been shown. I have to fly in town and check on the ski while it sits in storage as RideNow has basically told me they have attorneys go ahead and use my attorneys. I've strangely run into hundreds of people in so many areas that have had bad repairs, bad deals, damaged new units and major complaints that make this business questionable and seem predatory. Don't just take my word though. I don't even try and run into people angry at RideNow. Ask the community, look at RideNow reviews(and Metro Motorsports) on Google and Rip-off Report. I truly wish I had never heard of them and that I could rewind the clock on what was supposed to be just a quiet peaceful time quarantining with some jet skis and utvs. I'll be buying more vehicles but I am certainly not risking it from RideNow or BRP.

Thanks for the informative video Captain Frank. I'm about to put down a deposit on an FX Cruiser. I'm in Ohio so I don't need delivery until Spring but as you note it is necessary to get in the queue now. I have a question about the cruise control, I rented a Sea Doo last summer and am wondering if the Yamaha works the same. Suppose you are going 30 MPH and you set the cruise control at that speed. If you let go of the throttle and allow the machine to return to idle speed for a bit, and then accelerate again and squeeze the throttle all the way does it return to 30 MPH for cruising (similar to the "resume" button on a car's cruise control) or do you need to set your cruise control speed again after each time you release the throttle?

  • @TheShipsLogg

    @TheShipsLogg

    3 жыл бұрын

Thanks Seth. On the Yamaha, once you completely release the throttle after setting the cruise control, you will have to set it again. One feature that also could be useful in some situations is the drive control. If you know that you just want to be out for a relaxing leisure cruise, you can set the drive control to max out at your desired speed, say 40 mph. At that point, you can just pull the throttle all the way and it will not go past your set speed. In addition, you can still use the cruise to set any other desired speed as long as it is at or below the set drive control speed. Of course, you cannot go above the set drive control speed again until you turn it off.

Here is something you would not know, because you have foot-well drains. The wells get filled with water when you spray off the ski with the garden hose. Another way they get filled is, if you do not have a rear-step, there is a way to climb onto the ski, from the side (old school). This is accomplished by reaching up and putting both hands on the handle grips (turn the steering all the way away from you). You then pull down on the ski until it tilts to the side enough to allow you to slide half of your butt on top of the foot-well. You then place your leg in front of you (in the well), and bend it all the way. Then pull yourself up using your grip on the handle-bar, your arm muscles, and your leg muscles. Awkward, but it works

While you can get speakers with the Yammy, they are not integrated and I chose not to get them. So far, I have not missed not having music. We will see if I still feel that way after a few long trips. So far, I have not needed IDF. We will see if I change my mind on that one. LOL. Closed cooling, of course is good if you run in salt water a lot. Diligent flushing of the system after running works well too. I did it for years with my last boat and never had an issue. I have ridden a Seadoo Trax and it couldn't do anything with me on it, was like hoping onto a PeeWee 50 motor bike. It's also why they make different size motor bikes as a small female on a large Motor bike is just to dangerous as she wouldn't have the muscle to handle any problems, same as a smaller male on a large Motor bike and it's the same with anything. We have a 2020 fx cruiser ho *non supercharged* it easily tops out at 57 and it seems like the supercharged version is a little bit better on fuel and it has pretty much everything that that one has but a different color

Absolutely nothing so far. I am very particular about beaching my ski though. I really have only done it once or twice in areas where I have super super soft sand.

Thanks. Yes, they are more fuel efficient than Sea Doos. Back in late February, I did a ride with a group and I had a rack on the back with extra fuel. We had 3 Yamahas and 1 Sea Doo in the group. The only one that we had to refuel was the Sea Doo.

@@ShutterFanatic Youi are correct that the Yamahas do better on fuel but the fuel capacity does depend on the model. The Sea-Doo RXT-X 300 and the Yamaha FX Cruiser SVHO both have a fuel capacity of 18.5 gallons.

The footwells still fill with water and they take quite a while to drain. Your feet will still be sitting in water.

You are right but they are not designed to keep the foot wells empty while riding. If you're sitting in the water and you have waves coming over the bow, no drain is going to keep them empty. They are more so designed to keep the wells empty when the machine is not being used. I'm sure you have seen a machine sitting on the trailer or on a jet port with the foot wells full of rain. The drains ensure that does not happen.

The HO is not underpowered. I have ridden one. But, I agree with you. I am glad I got the SVHO. When I am riding with a group that are all supercharged, I know I can keep up with them.

What’s the difference from the VX cruiser to the VX limited HO?

  • @TheShipsLogg

The difference between the FX Cruiser and the FX Cruiser Limited is some of the extra goodies that you get with the limited such as a sound system and tube for towing. I assume that it is the same with the VX.
