Testing Piston Engines on Dynos in the NEW Engine UPDATE!
Ойындар
In this episode we are back in Gearblocks in the pre-release branch looking at the new engines! The dev has been working on internal combustion engines and they are super cool to play with so I decided to test them on a dyno and see how they perform!

eeehhh from what i hear and experienced with makin em they are all 2 cycle engines, hit every revolution, rather than a 4 stroke like most engines also, rpm limit of 3k, makes it kinda diesel like all ima say, is perfect 2 cycle detroit engines bit big tho, 1700CC per cylinder, ~107 CI, 3 less than the biggest of the 2 cycle detroits.

@Kan the initial stutter is because of low rotating mass the dev should have added a flywheel to smooth everything out... PS just use springs to connect to the sway bar instead of linkages and it should be a decent enough torsion bar facsimile

I know little about engines. But it brings me joy to watch someone nerd out over their interests.
man this is a cool thing they decided to add to the game! love to see a combustion engine on the test car you built a little while ago.
Oh man! Even the sounds are kinda accurate!
I love how excited Kan gets for mechanical systems lol
Bought the game the second you started playing it. I haven't regretted it at all
Running an engine lean, once it's up to temp and up to speed, substantially improves your fuel economy. When it's cold, you "choke" the engine to make it extra rich to making starting it easier. You're right that from thermodynamic constraints, you'd expect to always aim for stoichiometric, but high energy kinetic constraints are weird.
@mattymerr701

Perfect combustion also leads to a lot of heat that can quickly overwhelm your cooling capabilities
VE% is what the engine is actually air pumping amount of it's displacement. A 2 liter engine can't actually pump 2 liters per revolution, because losses past the compression rings, the air flow in and out the engine and valve timing. And don't forget the faster it's spinning the less time there is to fill the cylinder. Also 1kW is 1,36 Horses.
So glad youre back on gearblocks! I vote for a mazda miata build! 5 speed front engine rear wheel drive, perfect track car. The camshaft can be clocked at whatever angle you need, he didnt ignore part collisions, you just needed to check the properties on the camshaft. So you just stack them inline and then clock them as you need for your engine. But the inline 6 is perfectly balanced, so they run forever, whereas the v6 isnt. Theres a reason the straight 6 is still highly regarded, at least in the smaller pickup category.
Volumetric efficiency (VE) is the ratio of how much air is actually in the cylinder vs how much could theoretically fit in it, given a specific air density. For example, if a cylinder can hold 100 grams of air, but only has 80 grams at the bottom of it's stroke, it has a VE of 80%. this most significantly affects torque, as higher VE ~= more fuel can be burned, making more power. Engines can also have a volumetric efficiency greater than 1, usually caused either by forced induction (using a turbocharger or supercharger to squeeze more grams of air than would otherwise fit) or by tuning the length of the intake runners such that at a specific RPM, the pulse of air caused by the valve closing on the last intake stroke reflects back in time for the valve to be opening, effectively "forcing induction" while still being naturally aspirated. either way, if you can measure Volumetric Efficiency, it can be a pretty good stand-in for how much torque the engine is making, and thus can give you a rough power estimate without having to directly measure the strain on the crankshaft.
Super-ultra-hype for Kan doing technical stuff in Gearblocks and SM!
Love the Gearblocks content
This game would be so fun in VR. Walk around clipping parts together. Then sit in the car and go for a rip.

This is amazing.
Try out stormworks again! I can tutor or anything, the modular engjnes may scratch an itch for you
there is a motocicle in the demo version's workshop of the game so no problem with balance 4 speed is easy only 2 parts to change gears
This is amazing
Oh yes definitely needs to see more of this game, hopefully they add turbos or superchargers or prochargers now that would be a cherry on top
Definitely wanna see trying to make an... R6 (?) a six cylinder rotary engine like in an old plane, just 6 pistons on 1 crank.

WHOO YEA BABY THATS WHAT WE ARE TALkING ABOUT BABY
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YEAH BABYYYYYYYYYYYYY THAT'S WHAT IVE BEEN WAITING FOR
It is kW times 1.36 for HP. ( number for american hp is different)
Variable geometry turbos can mitigate turbo lag pretty well if sized correctly. VGTs are also much more efficient as the pumping loss caused by the increased exhaust pressure of a turbo is considerably smaller than the mechanical loss of a supercharger.
Love your vids
love your vids cant wait to see you make a v12 car, also what about boxer engines
I love the sound of that inline 6 at low rpm it kinda sounds like a 5.9 Cummings at low rpm
I can't wait for this!! Maybe we'll have more advanced fuel systems? Customizable heads? Exhaust systems? Actual cams, followers, and valves? Engine tuning? This is awesome!! Edit: we need a higher max RPM. 3000 for a gasoline engine is really low. Most normal cars rev anywhere from 5000 to 8000
I can say as an engine "enthusiasts" (I nerd out over dumb little engine things) I can agree this is the coolest update for a game that I don't even own. I'll damn sure be buying it when I get the money.

goes BRRRRRRRRRRT through the compressor 😂😂😂
One part I really want is sprag/one-way clutches, especially on gears
im at the beginning of the video so idk if you realize this later on but the carburetor (throttle, as its called in game) mixes the fuel with the oxygen, so its totally normal for it to be in open air. the air-fuel mixture happens on the other side of the fly valve, not in front of it. just wanted to clear that up, since you seem to have your stat points everywhere but actual engines
finnaly another gearblocks video
I still think the manual transmission you made that you have to "press 1, pause, press 2" to shift is fine. It simulates pressing the clutch, moving the stick and letting off the clutch. Rather than some fancy sequencal gearbox with no manual clutch or something.
Sick!
Cool fact about superchargers. On Top Fuel and Funny cars. The supercharger takes 750hp to operate. In return we get 10,000hp to the wheel.
I think they can improve the sound slightly, probably using the exhaust pipes to help alter it, and that'll be sick
Hello kan the EFF is basically the ratio of valve, intake and exhaust area to flow.
Kan became the child at a candy store so fast lol
I can't wait for the first V843
Wait until Kan realizes he can make a boxer
The Volumetric Efficiency could be compression. Which will make sense with them being at 90%. Also, even though the benefit of a V6 is size, the benefit of the I6 is less engine vibration since the rapidly changing forces of the pistons is linear and moving up and down compared to at an angle shifting the engine side to side creating more stress.
they made automation with extra steps sound fun i wanna buy this game rn
Lean is hot, hot is fast.
finally a worthy competitor for stormworks
Is a little generator engine (all open without cover), and I like the blue structural parts. This is only a test model but is super great and wit a free weel waigt at the final part 10:32 Mmm 🤔 another tipe of motor and probably a generator motor for another electricity ⚡️ test 20:30 Another one
Not sure if this is part of the game or not but its is a common misconception. Yes the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio is about 14.7:1 to perfectly combust all of the fuel BUT that doesn't necessarily mean that's the AFR that produces the highest amount of power. here is an example I found with some googling "For example, if stoichiometric is 14.7:1, run no leaner than 11% rich for lightly-loaded, normally-aspirated water-cooled engines (~13.1:1 AFR, or Lambda = 0.89) for best power. For forced induction and air-cooled engines, go 22% rich (~11.47:1 AFR, or Lambda = 0.78)."
I wonder if there will be some special transmission parts to at least help keep things small. I don't want there to be just pre-made gearboxes, but there needs to be a way to make them more compact.
now all we need is ATG to make a synthesized audio system for this
@Gearblocks DEV If you lurk your game's YT video's, its been a little while since I've played but we still need outer ring gears for planetary drives. also I hope we see resizable pistons, and diesels. keep up the good work! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Things of interest, possibly. Can you build an engine with a crankshaft with 90* offsets, so for a 4cyl you could fire 1234 (or something like that). Can you run the exhaust of one engine into the intake of another, and both of them work?
@cuberznl
5 күн бұрын
yes and maybe if it just has a carb in between the pipes
Stick a turbo on that 5 pot and you have a T5. They are Fantastic engines
I’d like to see a boxer engine being made, the piston movement might not be possible though? They mirror each other unlike a flat, so 2 crank shafts?
the volumatic effect is how much air fuel mixture is in the cylinder so 90 would be 90% fuel air mixture and 10% vscuum in real life this can go over 100% scince air is compresseble
Ahh yes 415 mph (667.8 kph) except this time with engine instead of electric motor
If you want to understand Volumetric Efficiency better, then driving 4 answers has got at good video explaining it
Hmmm... I wonder if you can make a radial engine, then? I would definitely want to see the connections view of a V8, and the firing order, because that seems to be a bit more complex than the inline engines. I wonder how the exhaust will be handled, and how the fuel connections will happen.
Pretty darn cool, the soy design is so good.
I would like to see more excotic configuratiosn like a W12 or X12 or a rotary engine
If this game would combine with screwdrivers it would be amazing. De internals of gearblox and the progression from screwdrivers 😮
I wonder if this would support custom piston arrangements (like W, radial, etc)
Im surprised u not tried storm works maybe i missed that
The parts were marked with sizes. I imagine once everything is working nicely they will probably add more sizes or parts. Little go kart might get a 1x1 cylinder. Or you can probably get stupid and put three 2 bore pistons in a V with two 3 bore
"the V-12 sounds a lot like 2 I-6's" -Kan 2024 I mean yes that is fundamentally what a V-12 is...
Stands for volumetric efficiency. The simplest way I can explain it is It's pretty much the percentage of air going into the engine at said RPM versus its theoretical maximum amount of air 73% is terrible but an internal combustion engine Will never hit 100% volumetric efficiency unless you add forced induction. Then you actually go above 100%. As far as volumetric efficiency goes, that's why turbos are becoming so popular. I'm pretty sure the way this game is using volumetric efficiency is as like a horsepower. Limiting type thing 100% would be the maximum amount of power that that engine could make and then if you want it to make less power, you can dial the volumetric efficiency back to restrict airflow
I hope he adds realistic electric motors too
ENGINES!!!
Hey, a bit ago i was able to come up with a way to make a manual trans by using a stepper motor to move a manual transmission with 2 buttons for 5 gears if that gives you any ideas
I wanna play this in vr!
So by changing an air fuel mix to be richer or leaner it can affect fuel efficiency and or power a richer mix will create more power at the cost of efficiency and being to rich will actually decrease power and by making the air fuel mix leaner it allows for better fuel mileage but if you make it too lean it would have problems staying running
Kan please play the screw drivers demo if you do some of the creations you will make on there will be insane
@ Kan, if you think building engines in this is good you should try building in from the depths. I'm very surprised you never played it
I always wait for the shift😂😂😂😂
kan casualy makes a engine symphony
I kind of wonder how a radial engine would sound in this.
you can simulate a diesel engine by giving it high peak effisciency at a low RPM.
You should build like a drag racer or like a semi with a motors
thats it im buying the game as soon as it goes on sale
Wouldnt the different fuel air ratios be for different types of fuel, so maybe there will be different fuels when the update comes out
How do i get access to the engines?
