Testing of Starship Autonomous Delivery Robots in Silicon Valley

Ғылым және технология

In July 2016, Starship Technologies conducted tests of its autonomous delivery robots in the heart of Silicon Valley. The robots achieved 90% autonomous driving, successfully navigating the sidewalk, avoiding obstacles, passing pedestrians, checking for traffic and completing a successful delivery for a senior citizen living nearby.
Starship Technologies have built the world's first commercially available autonomous delivery robot. Testing has been tested in 100 cities and 20 countries, in the aim to bring affordable, convenient and efficient on-demand delivery to consumers and businesses.
The video is narrated by the founder and CEO of Starship Technologies Ahti Heinla.
They deliver groceries, takeaway food and packages on a daily basis in 6 cities across 4 countries around the world.
Each robot has a sensor suite to enable it to drive autonomously, avoid obstacles and cross roads safely. The robot is locked during a delivery and has tracking to the nearest inch, cameras and alarms.

Am I the only one that felt anthropomorphic empathy and scared for the little "guy" as he slowed and paused at the intersections? Nicely done!

You really need to make it more visible. And maybe add sound. Right now it almost blends with it's surroundings. It is now practically invisible to drivers.

can it devise a correct delivery spot an unload itself? Like how the robo-vacuum finds it's charging dock?

What if there are roads without side walks, how will the robots manage to get through those? In certain city there will be sidewalks with cracks in them, what if the robots gets caught in those?

I'm not sure that it's legal for this thing to be on the sidewalk, also when it crosses the streets it needs to have headlights, signals, brake lights a horn, etc.... Also, how would it perform in snowy, icy weather. In suburban America after a snowstorm no one is shoveling their sidewalks for weeks from December to March. And the snowplows pile up snow on the curb, side of the road. I have to shovel out my mailbox on the curb so that the mailman can get access to the box.

They could implement tasers or something like that. Also I think there's loud alarm when it's picked up (or will be in future versions), you would get a lot of attention, and there's loudspeaker now. And of course cameras, GPS, and you can't open it without code easily. It's too much trouble really to deal with it especially if there's a chance they capture your face. And it's questionable how profitable it would be selling parts, there are many ways to make it too much trouble. Selling custom parts unofficially could be illegal, who would buy these parts? People who need these robots will not buy from someone shady if they don't wanna encourage stealing.

Delivery robots are outfitted with multiple cameras. A lock and a GPS thar can track them down to the nearest inch. No thief will be getting into one, unless they want to be hit with heavy fines or jail time.

We speak about technological progress as if it was some entity with a mind of its own, it is not. It is simply people working to create profit from planned obsolescence and constant needles change again for profit. So if we really had to we could stop it or we could redirect it towards other endeavors that would not devastate people who are simply trying to get by and live their life.

People benefit from automation, this is why we have so many people working in entertainment. KZread is full of "creators" whose lifestyle is only possible because of automation and robotics. Otherwise they'd be working in factories doing repetitive jobs.

There's a ridiculous blind spot to the shitty side of human nature in the design of this thing. I wouldn't give it 10 minutes in a busy city. There are desperate people roaming the streets, some of which think nothing of pulling a knife on a human being in a secluded underpass, you really think that if there are people prepared to do that then they won't just pull a hood up, throw a tarpaulin over these and steal them? Even if people didn't pick them up and steal them due to security measures, there'd be almost nothing you can do about, say, a teenager just giving it a kick and tipping it over, thus spoiling a delivery and potentially causing damage. This sort of apparatus requires a huge shift in society's values towards respect of property and the concept of what is property. Not to mention the luddites that'll feel resentful in sharing their sidewalk with a gimmicky gadget (which will increase the temptation to kick them).
