Might have some ultra fine gold lock-up in the partially oxidized sulfides (brown sands), which are being panned off to tailings. In my quartz ore, if I want to concentrate, I do so at minus 40 - 50 mesh, and then panning down to the brown sands. Then roast off remaining sulfides and then grind them to minus 200 mesh before leaching. Each ore has it's best method though.

I’ve also heard as ‘another’ method to roast black sand concentrates under high heat, then submerge them in (ice) cold water help release (crack out) the gold as well. But this method is more for alluvial gold concentrates.

I've tried it a couple times long ago, but didn't see anything liberated. Of course, it all depends on the placer deposit. It would apply to particulate gold which is coated with manganese mineral, hematite, or possibly magnetite -- the theory being that the gold expands with the heat and the mineral shatters with the quench. My post refers to ultra-fine particulate gold, gold films and gold telluride deposited on the sulfide lattice planes. Takes a lot of it to make Something, An eventual source of Placer "gold dust." @@royjohnson465

But what if you check the stones with a metal detector first, so as not to waste time on chemistry?

To dissolve gold you need chlorine . Aqua regia produces chlorine and dissolves gold.

@@myadventure7069thanks, I have seen many recipes for leaching, with oxidizers like perchlorate or peroxide with HCl and even NaCl for free chlorine. I am rereading De Re Metallica chapter X just to get a handle on it.
