Testing Jakes on a Detroit 4-53T

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

2010 video after installing Jakes on my Detroit 4-53T. My late father and nephew did most of the work, this is the finished product. It's now swapped into a 2009 Ford F350.

    Personally I'll take 28 liter Cat (or bigger) at high idle suddenly going to full load. Like in a wood chipper getting fed a big tree stump.🙂 music to my ears.

    @@_tyy8121 When I started in construction in 1970 there were a lot of jimmies and I'm fairly sure setting high idle on 4-53s is responsible for most of my high frequency hearing loss. Nobody wore hearing protection back then . I was good at tuning them but never liked the scream . I worked on every thing from a 1943 6-71 to Ddec Silver 92s . Ddec was the last gasp to save the Detroit but the handwriting was on the wall in 94 . Emissions finished the 2 stroke and is killing all diesel engines. We have 10 trash trucks 2010 and newer at work and 3 of them have been in the shop in the last 2 weeks with major emission control related problems .

    @@_tyy8121 The E9 was a hell of an engine, very good horsepower and unreal torque. The 237hp slant 6 had 1200ftlbs torque at 1200 rpm....and the torque convertor in 657 Allison stalled 1200. We had all the different drivelines in stock for when they twisted them in two

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes it will easily fit in a 1979 Ford F250 and up. I'm running it in a 2009 Ford F350 and it's great. For the pros, its a unique engine that you don't see or hear much. You either like these engines or hate them. Lots of power compared to the gas engine and good fuel economy. Reliable and parts are relatively cheap. Can put Jake brakes on them for towing and they are a plus. For the cons there are a few, the engine is heavy, 1250 pounds without the trans. Transmissions are limited because of the #2 flywheel housing and need to be close ratio preferable 6-10 gears in a manual and 4-6 in an automatic. Good running 4-53T can be hard to find and if your not a mechanic cost will add up quickly. Mechanics that know these engines are harder to find. How well did it fit into the f350? Was it difficult? How’s the engine power and torque?

  • @detroitgarage9430

    It was a very tight fit, basically crammed in there with Vaseline and feeler gauges. Estimated power is around 230 HP and 525 FTLBS of torque. Once it's broken in I'm upgrading to 9A90's and a water meth system. That should get me up to 250 HP and 580 FTLBS of torque. I'm slowly improving the power and very happy with it.:)

    DetroitGarage that’s some pretty good power, but it was a tight fit right? Would you recommend doing an engine swap like that? And also the dumbest question, since it’s a 2 stroke diesel, does that mean you gotta mix oil and fuel? Or is that only with gas 2 strokes?

  • @detroitgarage9430

    @detroitgarage9430

    @@ThrashMetal_12v71 Yes it's very tight. If you can fabricate and really love Detroits then it's worth it, otherwise put a Cummins in it. You don't have to use premix as the engine has an oil sump with pressure fed oil just like a four stroke.

    Yes it will fit, but you’d be better off with a 3/4 ton. Engine ways 1200 lbs without the trans, so it heavy. As for adapters it depends on what trans you want to run. Phoenix castings makes a lot of different adapters, so it’s not a problem finding one.

    Might be fun to swap one of these into my 95 F150. The 300 in it is a good motor, sure, but I love me a screamin' jimmy and this would fit in the nose without too much fuss. And it'd sound demonic. And it'd pull more than the brakes, suspension, and tires could control! Might go N/A with it. I don't care much about fast or power. 120hp is plenty; that's what my 85 makes from its carburetted 300 and I can run 75-80mph with everyone else just fine. Plus if it's N/A it's easier for me to do some crazy header/exhaust shenanigans.

Ford used the same chassis, body, front end on the 3/4 ton, 1 ton back then as they did the 1/2 ton so all I need to do is get PowerStroke front springs for a 92-96 2wd and throw 'em in there. And prolly the shocks too. Prolly still be a bit on the soft side...not sure how much the 7.3 weighed...but that's also fine by me as itt'l make it ride nicer.
