Though i feel that this must be said for other readers: that a single-trial Investigation is not "if and only if" to using scientific method ... if you want _real_ SM, do as Cody suggests in the conclusion and repeat his results 30 times over, but instead also use a control group (same test on retail or _real_ "activated charcol" to compare titration results ... again, 30 times over) 🧐 Why the repetition? To generate higher-resolution statistics for predictive probabilities; thirty trials is the "accepted" minimum, but the more tests, the merrier - and a _more likely_ accuracy ... not to mention a higher "credibility" in a concensus, given type I or type II errors are not introduced ... (notice: probability is not tautology; science is NOT a proof) 😉 Until then, until YOU've repeated his results, consistently, Cody's results could just be outliers or even a bad test implementation 😁

I'm confused, in his test 1 gram of charcoal absorbed 20 mg. And it seemed like that was from 9 mL. So that would be 2mg/mL per 1 gram of charcoal? But your measurement is in grams - 2mg vs 90grams is huge difference

Right? He seems genuinly concerned, almost brings a tear to my eye. I want to bring up the removal of the dislike button, this is a perfect example of where you'd see a video where activating charcoal with lemon juice would have some k likes and no dislikes. But as Cody has proven this is straight up dangerous.

Hey Cody! If you are reading this, there were some things you did wrong in the video. I work with activated carbon (AC) on a daily basis and I think you were trying to chemically activate the charcoal. First of all, chemical activation needs heat, at least 600ºC. Second, you should impregnate the charcoal with the reagents and then dry the mix for about 24h. After this step you use heat, with an inert atmosphere to prevent burning. All that is left to do is wash the AC with water until the pH is neutral. Although the quantities of activating agent seemed right you can try to change amounts used to find the optimum. Hope this helps.

the lemon juice did not cause the charcoal to fail. the charcoal just did its job by filtering the lemon juice. the charcoal was all used up by time you got to the iodine test.

That is not necessarly the case, large scale plants economics don't always translate to the amateur chemist, take ammonia production : for a company there is no question that the Haber-Bosch process is the economical way to go but it necessitates tools that make it impractical for the average backyard scientist and alternative chemical methods become attractive. So I think this was worth to investigate even if it was a likely failure

the reason why the lemon juice didn't work is because it contains citric oil so the charcoal absorbed it and won't let go of it. the charcoal became locked with the citric oil and would not allow any other liquid to be absorbed. citric oil is used in wood stains and wood cleaners and the oil is lock in it and creates a protection layer that help keep wood hydrated.

Your videos are fascinating. they are really fun to watch

"Test it! That's the least you could do!" I love this. I got in what to most seems like a very petty argument with a youtuber recently in a comment section because he was giving opinions on hunting arrows and their effectiveness, but his stance was in complete contradiction to what testing shows. The people who put the info out include a couple guys who have post graduate STEM degrees and spent their whole careers studying ballistics. The tests can be replicated with just a scale and a $100 chronograph, and I tested it out and got very similar results. It drove me nuts though because people take his advice and if they do they are going to go out and try to take the life of an animal with a much less effective setup, and even though he knows this and tests stuff out on his channel all the time, he does not seem to have any interest in taking an hour and testing it for himself. Call me what you like but I think if you are going to go kill an animal, you owe it to the animal to do everything you can to be an effective, efficient killer and minimize its suffering. To have hunting be such a big part of your life and refusing to take an hour to find out if your thoughts on arrows are off base blows my mind. When I thought my setup might not have been as effective as possible, it was my obssession to gather quantifiable data and correct that.

I gave up being worried about people spreading b.s. The individual that takes bad advice is doomed if they don't realize that there's very little good advice available anywhere. I mean, how do you explain to someone that any moron can and probably will offer bad advice all over the internet? How is someone not aware of that? Even the "experts" often are inaccurate when it comes to various subjects. I feel like everyone should be issued a book when they are born, that explains how they can evaluate information. It's astounding how many people assume they are born with those skills. I understand where you're coming from. I just think the people offering bad advice are a symptom of the more fundamental problem. Peace.

Is there an already established electrolytic method for activating charcoal of a generally useful grain size? It seems like with the right setup, possibly using a carbon cathode and an anode made with charcoal grains conglomerated with an inert binder that can be easily dissolved out after electrolysis combined with the right electrolyte and voltage, it should be possible.

That was just a top of the head idea with no further consideration put into it; the grain/binder anode probably wouldn't work out now that I think about it a bit more because of more than a few different reasons. Maybe cycle through appropriately sized anodes after a certain elapsed period producing the proper micro porosity and which are then crushed to the desired grain size? Idk, was just a random thought that crossed through my mind so it might not be possible in any configurationn, at least with any worthwhile efficiency or effectiveness.

The closest thing I could think of is electrochemical exfoliation which is actually used to produce few layer graphene after sintering or partially oxidized carbon nanoparticles/nanoplatelets or whatever depending on your source material. This is a proposed „green“ synthesis of mass producing graphene rather than with cvd or hummer‘s method. Though activating charcoal with the chemicals cody covered above is generally fine though the impregnated carbon has to be heated with say the KOH to ~600-1000C to activate it

Glad to see your still pushing threw i enjoy you and your channel it seems the algorithm doesn't tell me when you have a new video I have to check your channel every now and then I even have the bell activated and i'm subcribed.

Nice video! I love these simple straightforward ones. A couple questions: you mentioned that you could also grind it very finely to increase the relative surface area. For purposes where the dusty nature isn't a draw back, would super finely ground charcoal work? Could you grind it to a small enough particle size to have a similar volume to surface area ratio? It seems like if that worked it could be a useful alternative for some purposes (eg. Absorption of noxious ingested chemicals, odor control if nested between a membrane, etc.)

"Inject it with steam" So just shove it in a pressure cooker?

He mentioned superheated steam. A pressure cooker will only get you wet steam and more water than you would otherwise because of the pressure.

If memory serves that would still be several hundred degrees below hot enough. It's more a matter of injecting steam into red hot charcoal.

It may be more proper to call it superheated water vapor at that point. I know folks working with power generation would still call it steam, but for layfolk steam implies water vaper near its condensing point or warm clouds of condensate.

Cody this is the reason I love your content, you take the time and do the experiments. Remember when you had a magnet in your finger to test out extra senses!! Man! Awesome! I like to think you know what you are doing and you seem to know what precautions to take. I have no idea how you come up with some of your ideas, but you inspire me to learn and get to know more. You make it look easy and it's great!
