Testing for Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Ammonia and Chlorine | Tests | Chemistry | FuseSchool
Ever wondered how to conduct a chemical test for the presence of colourless and odourless gases? Watch this to find out how!
At Fuse School, teachers and animators come together to make fun & easy-to-understand videos in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths & ICT. Our OER are available free of charge to anyone. Make sure to subscribe - we are going to create 3000 more!

Summary: 1, Hydrogen: "Pop" sound when taking a flaming splint (matchstick) near the reaction vessel. 2, Oxygen: A "glowing" splint put near the mouth of the reaction vessel, then it will turn out flaming again. 3, Carbon dioxide: Test with lime water, a positive result is turning out a milky solution. 4, Ammonia: Turns red litmus paper to blue. 5, Chlorine: Turns blue litmus paper to red then bleach.

the test for ammonia with Hydrochloric acid is not commonly used due to the product (ammonium chloride) being moderately hazardous hope this helped anyone :)
Thank you
so touching for an excellent video
thnx for such a amazing explanatio
In the presence of oxygen The glowing splinter relights also because oxygen supports combustion ☺ but the one u told is also correct
Nice! Dumb question but how I do a make a "glowing, not burning" split?

@Funwinxpixee

Rhea Johnson I hope it isn't too late anyways..yeah they all are chemical reactions. The gases are produced as products. Ammonia from ammonium salts plus acids cause ammonia to be liberated,. Check this www.docbrown.info/page13/ChemicalTests/ChemicalTestsg.htm
