Testing Flat Cars or Where is My Caboose?

This was filmed on the private White Creek Railroad Near Grand Rapids Michigan. In this video I am running Gradar 75 a radio controlled 7.5" (190mm) gauge battery locomotive. We were in the process of building some new flat cars and I took two out for a test run. Usually the cars have safety chains to ensure the train stays but they had not been installed yet. I ran most of the railroad and met the railroad owner not shown and he asked me "Didn't you have another car" I looked back an to my surprise my caboose was missing. Do I find my caboose? Watch the video to find out.

    What a layout!! This guy must be a multi-millionaire to afford that much land, track, switches, locomotives and such. I would be happy with HO scale about 60 feet long and 20 feet wide.

    14:23 Holy cow, that’s a tiny little thing. I know the dynamics and theory behind the lower rolling resistance of steel wheels in steel rails, but that is impressive, nonetheless. I would live to have a nice piece of property like that, and use the train to move firewood to the house and barn. At least then, I could have the thing work for it’s keep, as well as have fun. I did lawn care this last year, and I have a suggestion for you. Set up a flatcar with a backpack leaf blower. Have the nozzle pointing forward, and it can blow some of the debris out of the turnouts before you get to them so it cleans out the points. Also, I have used leaf blowers to clear sidewalks instead of breaking my back with a shovel. I found it much more effective at clearing the compacted snow from footprints. The air gets under that pressed snow, and flips the chunks out of the way. I would imagine that in the winter, you might set up a pair, and it would look similar to a high-speed mainline, where the shear forces of the trains keep the snow from collecting on the tracks. Just food for thought.

    I lost the caboose shortly before the segment of reversing. This is mostly down grade, and I had to reverse about 1/4 mile. I had met the owner of the railroad. He asked me if I had another car. At first, I said no as I still had the two under construction flat cars. Then I noticed the missing caboose. Thanks for watching.

    Where are the chains between cars? Is that not a White Creek requirement?

  • @steamlogger

    @steamlogger

    7 ай бұрын

    Yes, chains are required at the White Creek Railroad. I had special permission from Russ to run without them on this run. He sourced trucks from another manufacturer and the flange profile was not quite IBLS standard. The coupler on the last flat was open when I found my caboose. Did a stick hit the release? Or did it bounce open? We will never know. I met Russ at Glenwood and he said “Didn’t you have another car”. I had been checking regularly and the new flat cars only had one derailment. This was at a joint just after a turnout where both rail ends were straight across from each other. Thanks for watching.

    Not a specific logging site but much of Michigan was logged in the late 1800s. The locomotive in this video is battery powered. Here is a video showing the engine when it was gas powered. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKt2rsFqpKrMp7Q.htmlsi=byy1GgiZH2-J93l6 It had a friction clutch and two speed transmission. It ran almost like a manual transmission auto. It didn't pull much hence the change to battery. Thanks for watching.

    I honestly think that line is too big! While it is obviously stupid running round and round in circles on a small line I wonder if that is too long. There seems little variety nor a use for the line. What do others think? Can I add that if I had that much space and money I would put in say a coal mine or a town and run trains to and from instead of literally miles of tracks seemingly just put there because there is the money.
