TESTING DIY HOMEMADE CONCRETE WEIGHTS $10 A PAIR - WORTH IT??

Subscribe for more videos on all things garage gym.
Note: (reinforced w wire) First Set was w Two Wires ( The one that broke)
( Reinforced w Rebar) Second Set was dropped on the grass and then concrete ( solid)
Overall I was impressed with their performance,
I don't see concrete weights being practical for most people because they will slowly break over time and create dust, for a garage, it's not ideal. However for outdoor usage these are perfect for setting up an outdoor strongman setup.
Rough Estimate of Cost Below:
Rebar from Home Depot - 4 for $5
90lbs bag of High Strength Concrete - $5
Total - $10 per pair of 45lb weights
PLUS THE MOLD of course...
Also other tools ( some might have them already)
Tools used:
Wire
Rebar
Concrete
Shovel
Finishing Tool
Concrete Mixing Tub
Hot Glute Gun

To anyone watching this... I've perfected this process, to make these weights almost indestructible: 1) only use 5000lb High Strength *Crack Resistant* concrete (Home Depot sells it). 2) do not use REBAR... That's why his weight was so much heavier than the other one. USE WIRE LATHE! Its extremely light weight, yet just as structural as rebar. 3) for every 50lbs of weight, toss in 1/2lb of shredded fiberglass stands and mix with concrete. The will make the concrete 5x more structural. 4) use something to vibrate the sides and bottom of the mold to let air bubbles escape before curing. 5) Use a cover on your mold, and let dry for 3 days, not 2... After the second day, take off the cover, and let it sit for the 3rd day uncovered to let any trapped moisture escape. 6) for "extra extra* durability, purchase JB Weld's 2 part epoxy and coat around the exterior by hand. This will not only fill and cover any air pockets, but will also create a hard shell around the exterior to prevent chips. 7) Spray with Plastic Dip, or Flex Seal rubberized paint. This will not only create a "bumper-like" barrier to help protect the weight, but also provide a rubberized grip for handling. 8) *MOST IMPORTANTLY* -- DONT BE THE IDIOT THAT THROWS WEIGHTS AROUND LIKE A TOOL. 9)You're welcome....

Concrete weights have their place. With the crazy price of weights right now these will allow people put something on their bar. They're excellent for most lifts excluding those where you drop the weights from overhead. You can make them more rugged by painting them with truck bed liner or plasti dip. Our goal was to help as many people get back to lifting ASAP, and that's what we're doing.

I think for powerlifters, strongmen and bodybuilders concrete weights are a viable option since the only lift where they would see any actual dropping would be the deadlift. I believe Crossfitters and Oly lifters are the only ones who have no use for these weights.

I made some with 3" thick 16" diameter sonotube a year ago, and mine are going well with no internal reinforcements. I did have to wrap one in duct tape though because it got broken from being set down on deadlifts. I think when I need more I'll try the bed liner thing. It would be worth it even if it all it did was keep them from spreading concrete dust in my room.

You will notice that the chipping only occurs on the unfinished side of the plates. In order to prevent chips from occurring, you have to use an angle grinder or sandpaper to round the edge of the unfinished side because there is a tiny lip on that side of the weights. So when you drop the weights, that is the first thing that will come to contact with the ground, causing a stress concentration and chipping the weights. Having made these plates myself, that should fix the chipping issue

Stephen Moryl You could also simply add a chamfered edge in the mold with caulk or modeling clay. I’ve made a lot of concrete countertops, island tops and tables in the past. When I get a chance I will give these a try. I have some admixtures I can add to make the concrete denser and hopefully more resistant to chipping. I also have some colored pigments laying around to personalize the plates.

The way I did my 50lb weights was I cut tire strips to fit inside the form. I screwed some 2" decking screws (Weather Protection) threw the tire Rubber into the mold area. Once I poured half the concrete into the mold I put my concrete mesh in and aligned the screws to sit on the mesh. Then poured my top layer of concrete. My weights have not chipped on the edges from being dropped from tip position, they are a year old and been dropped alot. Appreciate the video, great content.

A few things which were slightly mentioned was curing time for concrete. Concrete does take 28 days for a complete cure. But for this application it may not matter. Also I recommend getting fiberglass reinforcement strands and mix it in with your concrete it will improve the strength. And coating the concrete with a bedliner, plastidip, or flex seal will help keep the concrete from chipping.

Well keep in mind, concrete is rated by PSI and they have all different PSI ratings the most common is 3500pis then the mid high is around 5000 and you can get 7000psi all the way up to 8000psi. They make some that have fiber glass and rocks for the aggregate making them hold together well, they also have fibers you can add yourself. Then you can still put rebar in them then coat with a 2 part epoxy or just a urethane. Lots of options to make them stronger. Cement is only as strong as whats used to hold it together otherwise its very brittle. I love the look of these.

these weights (A): ~0.25€+/kg in my area (plus the mold/tools/possible coating/time expense) commercial vinyl-coated concrete weights (B): ~1.22€+/kg (cheapest i could find in my country) metal weights (C): ~3.66€+/kg (same as above) now to get a single pair of weight A, you need to get 2 molds ($60 each in caveman's web shop) and spend an hour of active time crafting them, and another 48 hours to actually use them (and 28 days for them to fully harden). if you add a thick plastic coating to them, you'll spend a few extra bucks per plate, since a single coating of plasti dip won't provide any significant improvement to structural integrity. making a pair of A would thus cost ~9€ in raw materials, 1.50€ in plastic coating = 10.50€ in ingredient costs, but factoring in the single-time payment for the 2 molds (106.90€) and any possible tools you may need (~10€), making 200 kilograms worth of weights would cost you 221.90€ putting your TRUE total cost at ~1.10€/kg. over the course of making these 10 weight A plates you would've realistically spent a total of about 8 hours obtaining the required materials, mixing/pouring/leveling the product and finishing & coating it. on top of this active time spent, your passive time spent would have been 240 hours (10 days) to give each plate 2 days to set. this means you need approximately 2 weeks to get 200 kilograms worth of weights, since you likely won't craft them back to back with maximum efficiency. to get any amount of weights B, you can place an order in 1 minute and wait for a few days to receive a fully ready-to-use product. these weights already have a thick vinyl-coating to provide durability. you don't have to spend any time or any extra money with these weights as they are fully ready to use upon unpacking them. furthermore, weight B has no additional/hidden costs. the shipping costs are 0 if your order exceeds a 69€ limit. weight B costs fractionally more (~10% per kg), but you only spend 2 minutes placing the order, whereas you'd spend several hours making the plates yourself. so, if you think your active time is worth more than 1.5 cents an hour, then weight B actually becomes the cheaper option. weight C is 3 times the price of the aforementioned weights, but they will most certainly last forever. you can use them almost however you like, and they will not break. if you're a young guy investing in your own gym, you might want to consider weight C, since if you keep lifting weights for multiple decades, you'll never have to get any other plates. it's very difficult to say how long weight A or B would last, but i would venture a guess they'd hold their own for about 2 years before they started to become totally unusable. if your home gym lasted for 20 years, you'd need to buy new concrete weights 10 times over the lifespan of your gym. this means the price you're paying for concrete weights is actually 10 times higher with these parameters. the longevity of weight C is the main selling point here. don't get stuck thinking about the present moment! set your gaze far into the future. getting metal plates will ultimately be your cheapest and most reliable solution. **TL;DR:** these plates aren't as cheap as they seem, and concrete weights will eventually break -- even if you're careful. steel plates will NEVER break -- even if you're completely negligent. if you plan to train for a long time, please do consider paying extra for quality and durability. even if steel costs 3-5 times as much as concrete weights, you'll simply NEVER have to replace them. if they last 10+ times longer, then paying 3 times as much is really a bargain...

I have seen a cool idea where instead of molds you just pour the concrete into worn out scooter tyres, which has several advantages: *) You don't have to pay for molds. (Realistically you can make those in some old buckets or whatever too btw). Just checked our most used trading platform here and people are giving away old tires for free. *) You can make all in one go and not have to wait for the molds to free up from the last cast. *) You don't have to clean up molds etc since the cast stays in the tyres. *) The tyres make it much more rigid and won't break in normal usage. I think it's fine for people who have an outside or garage gym and/or are just excited to do something themselves. I also don't think the old "in the xyz hours spent you could have earned abc amount of money" is really what happens in real life. Chances are high you are just spending your free time to goofballing on the KZreads instead of somehow making money or doing something useful otherwise. Edit: Oh, and before I forget it: There is also the market for used iron weights - you might find a bargain. I once found 10kg and 20kg cast iron plates for ~1€/kg. Right now prices seem pretty crazy due to Corona though - but maybe afterwards some people might want to sell the weights they bought.

The problem is that getting metal weights right now is next to impossible (well, I could if I wanted to drive about 1000 miles away) unless you pay over $4 per pound (the CAP weight bundle set that is normally $249 for 300 pounds is around $1200-$1600. Also, no need to buy two molds. Just make one set (45/25/10), let it dry for three days, then the next set.

I seen this video before but never really put value in it other than just entertainment because I never entertained concrete weights for myself because I do drop my weights, however on the 2nd watch something you said stood out to me "Use them to weight down your rack" *EPIPHANY* I do have a rack arriving and I was thinking I was going to how to fiqure out a way to weight it down and this will come in handy, Off course I am going to paint them black and dress them up a bit to look decent but after that they arent going to move off the rack. Brilliant idea.

It's worth the extra step to reinforce them. I wonder if you combined these with a pair of bumper plates how well they would do. If the bumper plates are slightly bigger and the concrete doesn't make direct contact when dropped,, then they might honestly be the best option for someone on a budget.

I have very limited access to stuff. Plus me being 16 and broke. So I couldn't afford to use metal barrel as mold nor did I have any means to cut the metal. So I used plastic bottles and made a mold out of it. I just cut the base and top part of the bottle which is curved. I only use the straight portion of the bottle. Then you can either cut it horizontally depending on the height of the weight plate. After you decide the height you can just cut it vertically. Make more of these for the desired diameter. And then tape the loose ends or if possible drill holes in it and use copper to tie it up. I suggest tape since it worked for me. Then just pour the cement, use some iron in between the two layers and boom, you've got yourself weight plates made with plastic bottle mold

If I made these I would include fiberglass strands in the concrete. They might help with the chipping (localized cracks). The main rebar would prevent the weight from breaking completely and would still be a good idea. Just 10M (or even 5M). I would set it up kind of radially to help with balance.
