Haha yep. I was surprised by how well some of the other diffusers performed with a couple of subjects but overall the reflector/diffuser kit was the strongest for sure. Cheers

Really interesting test. I've never used a speedlight in my landscape photography. That 4th diffuser kit is quite the setup! I'd say overall the Gary Fong deflector and your deflector kit really outperformed the others. Great stuff as always mate! Hope all is well, have a great weekend down there!

Thanks a lot Paul! I could only think of a few scenarios ( focus stacked )ultra wide- angle shots where a speedlite could be used to bring out details in the foreground in certain scenarios but overall not really useful😀. Hope you’ve had a great week buddy. Have an awesome weekend! Cheers😊

This is such a great video bro. Of course the images were great and interesting results (didn’t know the amount of detail needed in checking for highlight spots for macro and insects 😁) but I also just noticed your video editing itself. 😂 great use of the jump cuts and transitions. Very informative and enjoyed this one man.

For me both quality and compactness are important. I have recently started using a cheap diffuser that slides into the lens and you hold it with one finger at 45 degrees. Super cheap very compact great images

Thanks for the video. I agree with you on the Crafty Bells diffuser. I think it looks best I have one and have done similar tests and it always looks the best with a standard flash. I also bought a Flashpoint MF-12 and the crafty bells double flash diffuser. I have not tried the double diffuser yet but others online say it is the best combination. In your first test. I would have taken off the lens hood for a more even test.

Thanks for watching mate, appreciate it! Yes, you’re right re the lens hood but I actually took shots w/o it as well eventually haha. Shouldn’t even have had it on, mainly use it when I record videos.😜 The flashpoint MF-12 looks interesting but usually having the light source as far away from the subject as practically possible yields better results but that could be compensated for with using much less output as well. Great video, very informative Peter. Great to see all the options side by side. Interestingly I've been considering a sphere recently, but a different brand. I think my main concern with it is that it disperses light in all directions, not just towards the subject. So if I do get it, I was thinking of rigging up something reflective inside the sphere - do you have any thoughts on that? Great video though mate, I can see people finding this one really useful.

Thanks a lot Scott. Yes, you’re right, directing light can be an issue with a sphere but upgrading it with an internal reflector might compensate somewhat. I’ve never been a MacGyver, so if you end up building something, let me know how you go!😀 Cheers

Thanks a lotChris! Was using TTL metering for this. I mainly use manual but most of the time it’s at max output to keep the ISO low. Cheers

You really need some sort of diffuser for this photography I think. It really brings out the images. Great photos as always.

Really useful Peter - I actually started watching this about a week ago and got called away midway through, had it earmarked to get back to. I really like your set-up. Just been across to the Crafty Bells website actually, do you know which model it is that you've got - the website isn't really too descriptive - is yours the large with twin bonnet or the combination bonnet? Thanks heaps mate, appreciate it. I actually have the small reflector/diffuser kit with a couple of bonnets ( one large which is for my Laowa 25 mm ultra macro and the small one for my EF 100mm ). Hi Peter, I've been considering the crafty bells diffuser for a while. Can you tell me how many stops of light one loses when using it? And another question, have you tried the AK diffuser ? I agree with you the many layers of diffusion of the crafty bells is better, but I am worried about not having enough flash power. The AK seems to have less loss of light, albeit at the cost of not having the many layers. But I saw some good results. Given the shipping costs and risk of customs , i can't afford to make the wrong choice... Cheers from France.

Hey mate, thanks for dropping by. Not sure about the exact amount of light loss as I’ve never measured it but you’re right that you need a powerful speedlite to counter that so you gotta take it into consideration for sure. I can only speak for the crafty bell diffuser system and I’m really happy with the results. I’ve never used the AK or Cygnus Tech etc. Good luck with your purchase & thanks again for your comment. Hey Roger. Thanks for watching the video, much appreciated. Yes, unfortunately they closed down their business a few months ago. They tried to sell it and at one stage it looked like they had a buyer but the deal must have fallen through unfortunately. Sorry about that. I’ll potentiyll be reviewing different options down the track such as Cygnustech and the AK diffuser systems. Cheers

Hi Peter. Aren't you worried about diffraction at F14 on a crop sensor camera? I´m kind of scared of pushing it beyond f11.

I’ve tested it numerous times, f/14 is still acceptable for single shots but f/8-f/11 is a tad sharper. I think the optics of the 100mm is exceptional so can push it much further than e.g. the Laowa 2.5-5x ( well obviously gonna be much more noticeable because of the higher magnification ratio ). Initially I only used to shoot at f/8 myself😀. If f/11 gives you the best results then I’d stick with that.😉 Cheers

Incidentally, I tend to use one of those rectangular foldaway softbox/diffusor things that you strap on to the head of the flash, or my homemade (from a Pringles tube) contraption.

@@peterviragphoto Thanks, I think I'll try pushing it up a bit. I use a Canon 90D with the Tamron 90 mm macro lens (the newer version). I loved the flying insect photos in your other video, by the way. Absolutely fantastic shots.

But with ur fav choice the power from the flash must be reduced a lot.

Yes it is significantly reduced as the light has to travel through multiple layers/bounce off .

I don’t think you can be objective in respective of the highlights on the ichneumon given the insect was photographed at varying angles and some parts of its body are likely more reflective than others.
