Testing Coosa Composite for an RV Subfloor. SE 2 EP 6

As we continue our remodel of our Airstream, we simply hate the thought of putting wood back in as a subfloor. We found a product that claims to be mold resistant, water resistant, and lighter than wood. We put Coosa Composites to the test. Join us for our fun yet informative test and review of Coosa as a subfloor.

We are renovating a retired shuttle bus into an RV. When it was new from the factory (Federal Bus, division of Champion), a fiberglass composite floor was offered as an option. We had to take up our bus’ floor as some of the crossmembers were rusted. I assumed our floor was plywood - but discovered we had the composite floor - looks just like Coosa board - a fiberglass composite. (Maybe it was, don’t know if it existed in 2006.) The floor was pretty much the only thing holding it together with how rotted some of the crossmembers were. The stuff is nearly indestructible. Unfortunately we destroyed the back section of flooring trying to get it out, until we found an easy way to remove it. (Used a small hole saw with a pilot bit removed to drill around the hardened screws holding the floor down.) We would need 2 4x8 panels of 1/2 Coosa board to replace the damaged ones. I was LUCKY to find 6 panels of 3/4 Coosa board for under $400 (used, but no holes. Why someone invested in them to turn around and sell, who knows!!) You made a wise decision going with the composite floor. Our bus was 14 years old with 145k miles and you’d never know there was a problem with the crossmembers as the flooring looked so good. And this vehicle came from the rust belt.

It’s nice to see reviews on new and innovative products for projects outside the hotspot subjects. Subfloor is not something most people put a lot of thought into. D.

I was honestly just thinking of this the other day. Working on a '74 18 ft. Mallard build right now. The original subfloor is made out of particle board plywood and seems like nothing could possibly absorb more water... Looking forward to the install thank you!

Probably should have screwed them down for the drop test. The lack of security to framing adds forgiveness to both boards as they can flex and bounce when hit with force. If secured to framing, they have to take the brunt of the force without any forgiving movements.

You are the MAN! I was wondering if you were going to soak them in water and you came through like a champ. One of the reasons that I'm buying a Nexus is that their floors are a inch and a half of marine grade OSB last I knew. Sorry but I signed up for Road LIfe Project a while ago I think through You, Me and the RV but I'm not sure. Anyway good video and I'll keep Coosa in mind if I need subfloor in the future.

So Coosa recommends going with like kind. So if you have 1/2" flooring it would be recommended to go with 1/2" Blue Water 26 to fit perfectly. I opted for the 3/4" Blue Water 26 as I wanted extra sturdy flooring. Ill have to route my edges to fit in the Airstream c-channel but the Coosa responds just like wood does to a saw.

I just checked out pricing and a 4'x 8'x 3/4" sheet is now just shy of $300! The cost differential just doesn't justify the rot & mold resistance plus lighter weight. Especially for an RV subfloor. I figure a layer or two of Kills paint and maybe an extra layer around the edges would go a long way in mitigating plywood's deficiencies. (Darn, I really like those Coosa panels too.)

Okay, I finished. If you laminate that coosa in fiberglass you'll have a way stronger floor. Ocean cruising boat strong. Also as a full time RVer I love this channel. We'll actually be starting our own vlog channel in the next week. Keep up the good work and safe travels.

So you said you'd be careful about how you tighten up screws cuz it doesn't have the same tensile strength. What about the pinch point area between the wall and the frame doesn't that have to be pretty snug like should I say very tight. How do you deal with that can you use a compression bushing that goes in the hole just wondering? And yes I can ask serious questions I just like to make light of life too much seriousness equals no fun!

Thanks! Love the testing. However for the Drop test..... Use the dude jumping from different heights and landing where the weight did. You would have to screw the board PROPER into the 2 x 4 frame, for better support, stiffness and less bouncing. 1) Jump 6 inches into the air and land 2) Jump 1 foot up.... 3) Jump from a stool at 18 inches 4) Same as above but 24 inches. Just saying, I mean, no one is going to do this inside, right? But how about a heavy and/or loaded-with-stuff cabinet accidentally falling over on the floor or some heavy part/equipment dropped by someone who is carrying it? What then? Just saying.
