Testing Apple’s AirTags: How to Tell if You’re Being Stalked

Apple has acknowledged people are using AirTags, intended to track personal items, to attempt stalking and even car theft. I wanted to test how easy it is to use an AirTag to track a person, and how well Apple’s defenses hold up against potential criminal activity.

I live in an area with a really high number of bicycle thefts, so police said it’s not safe to ever leave a bike locked up outside. After iOS 15.4 is released (with updated anti-stalking), could you duct-tape an AirTag to a bike and see if it helps? Same for car, dog & cat. I’m particularly interested in cat use for a friend. Thanks! Note: We even had a dog theft here in broad daylight. (not a joke)

What sucks is if your tracking your own vehicle to basically know where it is if it's stolen, then the person who stole your car can find the tag in the car they just stole, or luggage, which kind of defeats the purpose of the tag.

It defeats the purpose 99% of us are buying AirTags. The stated purpose is to find your misplaced items like keys. It feels like Apple is ignoring the obvious reason we all wanted a tracker in favor of avoiding possibility of liability.

I would argue the delay in AirTags alerting whoever is with the tags would give the original owner time to find it, since they should already be able to track from their phone from the moment they lost it.

Extremely informative, I've never considered how quickly these useful devices could become dangerous. I think these devices are absolutely amazing but definitely would love to see more updates to ensure safety. Its a tricky subject as you often wouldn't want an alert to go out to someone who may have stolen an item from you without knowing that you had an air tag on the item (for example: my pricy little e- bike). Keep posting Dalvin, love watching you!

Imagine: you don’t own an AirTag. It’s the middle of the night, you’re at home alone, in your dark room. Suddenly you hear the beeping of an AirTag coming from the darkness of your house.

Yeah, it's trivial to just rip out the voice coil, permanent magnet, or both. You can even flash custom firmware onto a compromised AirTag that randomizes the device ID often, just like when it's paired with the owner's device. The mark will never hear the chime. And the AirTag can even be disassembled to lie half as thick so that it fits like a business card and still work normally. You can't have privacy without first having security and Apple really screwed that up with their design.

What if it’s tracking a thief who stole my goods. Apple is just gonna advise them my stuff is tracked? So basically Apple is on the side of thieves not the person who bought the tag to protect their stuff?

I think Apple made a fair tradeoff here. What a lot of media outlets have NOT talked about is that the vast majority of the time, these devices ARE useful and helpful to even victims of crime. It's much more likely for someone to have an AirTag in a stolen bag, car, bike, etc than it is for a (completely stupid) criminal to have an AirTag linked to their Apple account which has personally identifiable info that will ultimately lead to their arrest. An adversary who is capable of placing a tracing device and then performing a kidnapping or assassination in just an 8-12 hour window is going to be able to do this with or without an AirTag lol. The more likely scenario is that AirTags are helpful to their owners. If Apple shorterns this window of time, then those who have stolen items will be immediately alerted that there is an AirTag and they will find and dump it. With this nice window of time, it allows an AirTag to be successfully used to recover stolen items.

To really get somewhere on this issue, you need to simultaneously consider both the intended use and the nefarious use of this tech. You don't want to put a signaling beacon on your misplaced keys or other precious property. I am also curious why an airtag would be used to stalk someone -there are loads of no-name Android network devices that DON'T have so many features against misuse. My last issue is why do you make this clickbait video to explore the false premise that airtags are a threat to public safety? There is a serious issue here, but you need to consider tags that are better suited to nefarious use!
