We bought two Gnarwhals from Packraft Europe and now it's time to test those babies! We have one white whiter water deck and another one is self-bailer.

@@caide Hello Caj, can you give me some advice? I have a Gnarwhal with WW deck and am considering buying a self bailer. is a self-bailer worth it? i like the idea of an open boat. I'm a bit concerned whether a Gnarwhal XL will work for my weight (115 kg) and 30 kg of luggage or whether it means I'm sitting too deep in the water. Do you have experience with a lot of weight and luggage in the self-bailer? is a self-bailer much more sluggish and slower and less stable in waves? and would you say the 420d material is worth it? thank you very much for an advice…

@@berndbegemann6798 Hello, I love the selfbailer consept and I don´t like the WW rafts so much. I am paddling a lot of rapids and lake jumping places, so I like fast access and exit to the raft. I never had so much weight, so I can't tell you about that, but for me I don't sit so low. SB seats are higher than normal, so I have only my heals in water. SB is slower than decked one, you can feel it, when jumping back and forth from these rafts, but the actual different isn't much. For me I don't think it's an issue. I can paddle same speed than others and I don't see any difference in real life. Alpack gives 204 kg for XL Gnarwhal Max Capacity, it is for the WW, but I would guess, that the SB has at least 150 kg, so it should be fine with you. 420D is great if you don't mind of the extra weight and that is more difficult to pack to a roll. But it is stiffer and on whitewater it is great.

Great review, thanks Caj! What size did you get for Katja (at 150cm tall) and does it fit her well? My wife is a similar height.
@caide

Katja bought the size S with self bailer seat. It's higher so she got better fit. But now she has size S Wolverine and it works much better with short hands, because the tubes are smaller. So Wolverine could be better choice.

Hello, I don't paddle so much on the sea and I use whitewater paddle. I have now the Kober Lemon and I love it! Packrafts are not the best choice to sea, they take the wind and it can be dangerous. But with good weather it's doable and I would choose Alpacka Raft Expedition. I don't have own experience other rafts than Alpacka Raft, so there could be other options too.

Have you tested it for bikerafting? The high front doesn't look optimal for strapping a bike on, though i did find one review from NZ that said it worked well. I pretty much had my eyes on an Alpacka Mule, but being home sick has given me lot of time to watch your videos and some other as well. It does seem like the Gnarwhal has become a very popular boat during the last few years.
