Testing a Kickstarter Exoskeleton (DNSYS X1 Review)

Ғылым және технология

This is an interesting one, folks! I got my hands on a DNSYS X1 exoskeleton, which just launched on Kickstarter. It is a powered exoskeleton meant to provide motorized assistance for walking, hiking, running, and so on. This video is more of a log of my experience. If you're interested in more detail, check out my full written review: www.hackster.io/news/review-d...

    I think Assist Mode will be the main purpose of this device for elderly people and people recovering from leg surgeries. It will be an additional technique to using physical therapy treatments.

    I didn't know such things existed until today. Oh, I've seen some futuristic looking Japanese efforts but they looked overly designed, heavy and quite expensive. I'm with others who say that this isn't quite there yet, BUT OMG it doesn't look to far off from a really helpful and useful walking aid. I have MD that's progressive. I can still walk, but it's getting very difficult to get around. A simple curb/single step up, is too difficult for me now. I use my hands, in my pockets, pushing on my thighs, to better walk and be stable. This looks similar to what that does for me. I wish I was near Phoenix as I would really like to test this out. Can you try getting up from a chair and tell me if it gives you any aid at all ? I can't do that now without pushing off a table/walker.

  • @serialhobbyism_official

    @serialhobbyism_official

    I just tried it with the chair and, unfortunately, it doesn't do anything. It doesn't even try to assist-probably because it doesn't recognize that movement. I suppose that could be added with a software update, but I'm not confident that it would do much in that scenario even if it were trying to. Sorry...

    @@serialhobbyism_official Thank you for the quick replay and I should have thanked you for this video first. Like another commenter, your video was an honest review and very helpful. One more question, does this unit/motor only left your thigh/leg UP, or does it also Push Down on your thigh/leg?

    For someone who isn't mobility limited, something like this seems like the added weight of it would negate most benefits. if someone IS mobility limited, seems like this product isn't there yet to truly help them.

    @@jonatan_1991 this isn't a full replacement for leg movement though. if you can run at 27mph, it can help you slightly at keeping that pace. something heavier might actually be more useful because it could compensate for it's added weight and more, autobalance on uneven terrain, enable speed beyond the human limits, etc.

    There's another unit called Hypershell. I wonder how it stacks up to this one. I have mobility issues and have been researching these to aid in walking. Even a 10% reduction in effort sounds promising. Does it only pull the leg up or does it pull and help push back down?

    Unfortunately this is the only one I’ve tried, so I can’t compare it. It does assist in both ways (lifting and pushing back down). When walking on flat ground, I mostly noticed the lifting. When hiking and going up him, I noticed the pushing more. Feel free to ask any more questions you have! And if you happen to be in Phoenix, you’re welcome to try it for yourself!

    Someone has asked similar question on Kickstarter. It just works similar to a pedal assist that's why the range is longer since battery usage isn't as demanding. Same way you get more range from a bike peddle assist compared to a bike going on throttle. They say that they design the motors themselves, which makes the motors very efficient. As a result, the battery can support long distance.

    Also checking out their kickstarter. their goal was only $5k to create and distribute this. Seems to me like they just set a very easily achievable goal so that they can collect their kickstarter funds and launched what appears to be an all out marketing campaign. I smell scam here and am betting they will pocket kickstarter money and dissappear.
