The only paper towels worth using are the Viva Signature Cloth. Everything else is trash in comparison. There was no way I was buying this dispenser to begin with, but once I saw that it didn't work well with cloth paper towels I knew it was completely worthless.
It looked to me like the towel tended to bunch when you weren't supporting it from the middle. Because it retracts quickly and suddenly, there was tension on the top third of the towel (where it was being held) before you were able to let it go. That created the uneven pull. It also makes sense that horizontal layout retracted better because it wasn't being held anywhere and could just lay flat.

You can buy commercial hands free paper towel dispensers for a lot less money. They are made better and use the standard rolls of towels. The only downside is that the towels are paper based and not a real replacement for a consumer paper towel like Bounty. But they are very suitable for getting after spills or drying your hands.

Most of the time I need a paper towel is when my hands are wet or have in some form food products on them. In that case I don't want to touch the roll and get it wet or food stuff all over them. I had the same problem at a job I worked at.. They purchased a $500+ napkin dispenser, and the problem was refilling it! Some employees would get frustrated spending literally minutes trying to get it to dispense properly after refilling it. Some times it would give you a red light and stop. Other times a green light, then when you take some napkins, it would switch to red and you would have to start all over trying to get it to dispense again! After a year, we replaced it with the old fashioned gravity fed napkins. And everyone was happy! Some times technology gets in the way, and reminds us that old times are better!

I think laying it down is the best way to keep it from becoming uneven on the rewind. It seems gravity is just messing up the rewind and it's pulling it in with a tilt which causes it to jam. Takes more space laying down but to me it seems like the best position for it.

I noticed that almost every time you closed the dispenser you only closed the top and the bottom didn't close as much as the top. It was so frustrating that he kept holding it. Any resistance will cause the rollers to slip and pull unevenly causing it to bunch up. Also these use an optical sensor to know when it reaches the end of the paper when retracting. All you need is like an inch of paper sticking out to start with.
For $120 I expect it to cut my paper towels to specific sizes, not just dispense them. Like napkin size, small size, big size. Also for it to work everytime without issue...

The custom sizing device could be a decent product. I suggest you check into it and possibly start a kickstarter or whatnot if you don't find enough competition to already exist. So many ways to spin that as being eco-friendly as well as shopper friendly... could even be an opportunity to re-brand existing paper towel product. I could even see this being a commercial/industrial item that becomes ubiquitous.
Really nice review James. I think if you are spending over 100 then it should work far better than it does. If It cost £30 then I would consider buying it. Any more than that is far too much.

The paper towel and TP dispenser were perfected many, many, many long years ago. This is something nobody wanted, nobody asked for and nobody is going to buy. 30 bucks is also too expensive and probably over complicates something that works well, has worked well and will continue to work well at 1/6th the cost. One of these days Amazon is going to recommend a 500 Dollar TP dispenser that takes 50 Dollar rolls of TP. This special app-controlled dispenser is going to automatically dispense the right amount of TP and order me new rolls when I'm getting close to running out. We have app controlled cups and toasters. So why not?

I would think having a guide inside to thread it behind would help to keep even pressure on the paper as it retracts. Or maybe a spool that you could tighten on the roll to stop the roll moving inside.

Yet another one of those thngs NOBODY needs---enjoyed the review and enthusiasm!! Also how in the heck did this make it to a production model!!
You know what the problem is? Bounty works because it’s taller and do stays in place. The other rolls are shorter so they don’t stay in place. When the gadget is stood up and the paper retracts, since nothing is holding the roll in place, it wiggles around inside and says it jams. The gadget will always work if there was something to hold the roll in place inside! 😂
Thank you so much for your reviews. You save us from spending so much money as well as prevent us the hassles of returning items. You should be a comedian. 👍👍👍
Oh gosh just grab a paper towel. I never saw a problem.
A$120 solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
I just got a paper towel holder from the Dollar Tree. It's made out of plastic and it's the kind that you screw into the wall. It has two arms that hold the paper towel roll. And that's it. it doesn't take up space on the counter and it can't fall into the sink because it's above the sink on a holder. I don't see any need to buy anything super expensive for paper towels
Are you sure when it was upright the bottom was pushed closed as well as the top. I felt it wasn't quite closed properly at the bottom.
@ki85squared
11 ай бұрын
This is why the "lay it on its side" technique worked. The door not being closed mean uneven roller pressure. I wish James would have noticed this, but I can't blame him. The device should detect the door being closed when both sides are latched.

He had issues because he didnt follow the manual. They clearly show the dispenser on its side when loading/programming.
When James said "were off on a roll here now", I waited for him to look at the camera with a deadpan look on his face and say, pun not intended, lol.
one of the main differences seems to be you are holding the paper towel by the top edge creating some tension as it tries to retract the towel when it is standing up. When you put it on its side you were leaving it alone and it was supported evenly by the table so it could retract evenly. I think you were kind of messing it up
Thanks for the review. It reminded me that I have to put paper towels on my shopping list for tomorrow. 😊
Ice wizard of paper towels. Overly complex and tries to solve a problem that doesn't exist
“I think we’re on a roll here!” Congratulations on success but mostly for the pun.😂
That's awesome that you figured out how to make it work! 😂
You actually gave that product value now, we appreciate it playa
If want you want is a hands free towel dispenser, you can get a commercial unit pretty cheap. all of the units google shows when searching "electric towel dispenser" come in at under a hundred Dollars They use the cheap bulk brown paper rolls you tend to see in public restrooms, so the running costs will be lower as well.
This would be a pretty neat $40 product. Could help reduce use if you have a paper towel hog at the house.
So I noticed you often held the paper towel outward before it pulled it in. There might be enough tension there to cause it to bunch up. Can you try just closing it and not touching the towel?
Freakin' Reviews has finally transcended "reading the instructions", Now you MAKE the instructions.
Thank you for a very entertaining review!
I own the under the cabinet model. I really hated it at first due to all the problems I was having. Quickly learned if you're not using bounty it doesn't work well. You also have to learn to made a quick and clean pull when you use it.
Truly a solution for people who are afraid of germs and viruses. Might as well buy one of those public bathroom paper towel dispensers! The towels will last longer because you can get larger rolls and the size is usually between a half and full sheet of normal paper towel rolls. Only thing I'm unsure of is what type of quality you can get the public bathroom paper towel rolls. Most I've seen are pretty low end "paper-y" rather than high end "cloth-y".
This is the perfect product to tell the world "I have too much money; please take some from me"!
It appeared to me that the problem was, you were holding the towel before it retracted, which caused it to bunch. After you tear the towel, you shouldn’t need to hold the excess and guide it back in.
I wonder if it's the holding/touching the paper towels plus gravity causing a misalignment when first putting the roll in that screws with it, that's why the side loading works so well, especially because the papertowels are even supported on the first retraction
Lol. This reminds me of when I was a kid back in 1967 and my Grandpa gave my sister an old camera to take pictures at Expo 67 in Montreal. This camera took film on a roll which had to be loaded and fed through various sprockets and spring tensioners before closing the door. Try as we might we could never get the film to load properly. It would either jam or wind backwards and the picture number usually just stayed at 24. And although my sister pointed it at various attractions and pressed the shutter button, we never did get any pictures of Expo 67.
Definitely the best idea for paper towel holder. Is those ones that click as you pull so it gives tension. Simple easy and nothing to mess with like this hahaha
This is a very mature technology that you see in just about every single public bathroom. To see this fail so hard means these people have no clue how to engineer a product like this
There are already so many kitchen gadgets that require an outlet, I would never consider buying an electric paper towel dispenser
Must be very satisfying to figure out a way to make it work consistently

“I think we’re on a roll here”.
About 98% of these gadgets are solutions looking for problems that just don't exist.
I have to think it would get worse the closer to the end of the roll you got too considering as you said, theres no spool for the paper towel roll. Id think long term the only way for it to be consistent would be laying down but then its so much counter top real estate.
People are that lazy that they are willing to spend 120 dollars on a paper towel dispenser.
"I think we're on a ROLL here!" Indeed we are!
The real fail is anyone that would spend $120.00 for a paper towel dispenser.
"Off on a roll here now..." I see what you did there.
I think part of it is that it needs the towels to be almost perfectly straight when you tear it. If you tear the towel so that the remaining towels go towards the top or bottom it catches and then causes it to "jam" up a bit. I wouldn't go for a $120 paper towel dispenser but it was a fun review to watch.

This one of those things that I say "why do anyone need it?" about. Almost feels like more of hassle than pulling one or two sheets of from a normal dispenser.
It seems to me that the problem is that you have to senter the towels in the slot 100% perfect before closing the lid, or the dispenser will pull on the towels and crumple the paper. Or manby the dispenser only works vertical.

Looks like there is a second latch on the bottom side of the door when standing up. The gap isn't even and I'm guessing the rollers aren't contacting on both sides evenly, that's why it's bunching. Close the door tighter until you hear a click on both sides is my suggestion.
I'd save that money, and buy beer.
The only purpose of this is the quick dopamine some people get after buying something
Finally that my printer has been working correctly, this thing comes into existence!

They created a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.
Looking at the manual they only show it being loaded while on its side not when it is standing up. So that means you are suppose to use it laying down because it was originally designed to be mounted under the cabinet.
It looks like standing up it doesn't like the softer/thinner paper. And it looks like nothing I would ever buy. 😅 😂
Kudos for how patient and encouraging you were towards it as I could see it was trying. Still, $120 and all that fussing to get it to work - I'll stick with the one which came installed under the cabinet with the house when I bought it.
