You guys are absolute badasses for being able to be in that heat!!! I can’t stand being in any temperature higher than 75F

This clip sneaked by while I wasn't lookin. Its Sydney, its summertime, we're racing and we're getting thermal shut downs in ambient 35C temps. Having played about (amateur) with cooling fans and solutions, since none of the manufacturer solutions do very much right now (Losi, X-Ray). This clip confirms what I found so far, if you want to cool the motor, the fan has to blow on to the motor can directly, then it works very well. The drama is finding a way to mount the fan so it can do that. So far all attempts work well but succumb to the extreme G forces of racing. However, in interest of finding a solution, testing continues as time permits. Necessity being the mother of invention. Great clip though, to see actual real world testing and recording the results. Good juob guys.

So it sound like any fan configuration is better than none👍🏼

Oklahoma is so strapped for good hobby shops! We need you!

What we do is put thw fan behind the motor on an angle and secure with double sided tape then i make a shroud out of plastic and secure to the fan with double sided tape also. For the low profile Bodies this is the best option. You need to cut the back of the body around the fan to maximize air flow. Also i like to use a body reamer and make some holes on the opposite side to let some of the hot air escape and i also make some holes in the front windshield to let some air flow through the body.

Man that is HOT! If my motor gets over 140F I consider it too hot. Anything over 180F is bad news. I'm really surprised the fan couldn't keep the motor below 180F, even with 100F ambient. I'd say back off timing or go down a pinion if it's that hot with a fan.

Wish you guys did this on a TLR 22 5.0! Trying to look up fan mount options and there doesn’t seem to be many to pick from.

I run waterfall and drilled some holes in the body above the fan 👌👌👌

Maybe you try the rear-side mounted Fan again while its shooting out of the car, also with holes in the front window? thats what i'm running in my 1/8scale buggy and my temps dropped by like 20°C in 30+°C ambient!

Hey guys you can also shave the stock fan mount down a bit to fit in the factory location but turn to the back of car. Drill screw hole through and can mount the fan on the rear

I drilled a 1 inch hole in my windshield on my brushed losi 22 sct. Ran a hose to the motor, like air ram style. I run 3s which really makes it haul ass. Have not checked to see if it makes a difference yet due to rain. Budget was zero lol..

I would expect the water fall brace to perform better. With the fan mounted behind the motor and pushing the air forward, this fan must fight the air that is coming into the body from forward movement. If you could shroud this fan it would perform better and how I am building mine.

Have you tried to flip the fan where it pull the hot motor air off it instead of the fan drawing/pulling air to the motor or vice versa? Simply which is better pull or push fan?

Pushing colder air on it. Just lowers temps...thats the whole idea...pulling the hot air will just recycle it Inside the body...not lowering Temps

What battery was used in the test. I'm taking. Mine out sunday for its first shake down run but ures looks alot quicker. I'm running 17.5 on a 69/31 as recommended in the manual. My battery is a 2s 7.6v HV. Be interested to know if you've gpsd in ures in a 7.4v

Is the fan blowing ?

The only downside to mounting the fan like this is durability. I tried this one time and after a Wednesday night club race the fan had stopped working. Not to it working over time or anything, but from crashing upside down. Due to the fan being right underneath the body, it's the first thing that gets hit when landing upside down. I ended up putting the fan back on the side of the car instead, but would like to try putting it on the back corner of the car at some point since that showed to be the best placement for cooling the motor down.

I would be interested to know if the fan direction makes a difference…? Which way were you guys going..? I assume at the motor..?

Each test was with the fan blowing on the motor. Blowing away from the motor would be interesting to test but we didn't try that. -Brett

Quick question Can I run a 12v 0.6A rated cooling fan on a 12.6v 12A power supply or will it smoke up?

I'm thinking that should be ok. The fan will probably work at 12.6V without issue but will it shorten the lifespan of the fan? Maybe; but I don't think it will burn up. Hope that helps. -Brett

Hey Sam. We may not be able to ship LiPo's internationally because the shipping carriers considered them hazardous. Other than LiPo's, most everything else we should be able to ship to you. Even if you source LiPo's from a local shop, I would recommend looking for packs with high C Ratings; 60C and above if you can help it. Please avoid 50C or below as they may not be able to keep up with a powerful 1520 motor/esc system. Good luck! -Brett

Anyone ever said you look like Cody King. Lol serious question, how do you adjust brake strength, with the m11x? What is the trim setting for brakes? On an electric buggy?

You'll want to check out the ESC for the brake strength programming. All competition grade ESC's will have this function and will allow you to easily adjust the strength with a program card or something similar. The throttle trim button on the transmitter really only adjusts the neutral point up and down between throttle and breaks, but not the strength of the breaks. -Brett

Lol. Cody is a great guy and we raced a lot together back in the day. He was a teenager back then! I was in Thailand when he won the worlds also, awesome race. As for brake strength I have my radio close to 90 and use the ESC to set it so I still can dial in a bit more. For 2wd it’s usually about 80% in the ESC.

The extra port on the receiver. Any extra channel or the the AUX port will do. If you don't have an open port because of the transponder, a Y-Splitter cable can be used to plug the transponder on one side, and then the fan on the other: www.amainhobbies.com/eflite-3-yharness-ultra-lightweight-eflryh3ul/p56868 -Brett

I think you can get a Y-Splitter and connect the fan with the transponder. Get those plastic ice cubes keep them well frozen and tie one/two up with a rubber band behind the fans for the run...Keep clear off 100°C(boiling temp)parts and it will deliver much needed cold for a few minutes...!!!

No, these racing motors are meant to withstand these temperatures, I would hope anyone who comments here knows at least that these racing motors are meant to be run very hard, so they are made to withstand these temps

@Amain Tried the waterfall mount and fan on my b6.2 after watching this video and it made my car handle horribly, ruined months of setup. Car didn’t fly well, body didn’t fit, zero traction in corners. Wouldn’t recommend it.

You guys need to cut air holes in the body or even better cut the front window out of it. You will get better air flow to everything plus with the fan blowing in the car. It has really no where to go out quickly and remove heat. Yes it will take some out but not as well. We go through a lot in the rc boats when guys do not cut holes in the cowling to get air in and out. Suffocates the 2 stroke motors real bad. Example is 2x the air outlet as you have coming in. Try it and I think you might even see a bigger difference in it. I do realize you are running on carpet and some guys will run the setup in dirt which now you will have dirt being flung into the car through the window from the front cars. Walls can be done to divert the dirt but at same time still get good air into it.

If you don't cool the motors there is no way to keep the testing method consistent. Starting temperature NEEDS to be consistent among all tests for the data to have value. -Brett

Same concept eith testing cooling on computer cpu's the most reliable results of how effective the cooling is comes from bringing the loop or heat sink.upto equilibrium operating temperature first and then the different cooling methods show more reliably. Perhaps a makeshift treadmill with a constant resistance could be cobbled together. Without any cooling the motor should reach a temperature at which it holds constant under its own output and cooling. Then adjust the fan positions or compennants accordingly and reasses. Bringinf the motor upto temp as part of the test brings in many more variables. Having the motor hot from.the start of the test doesn't represent real world as well but it does control the experiment much better.

Anything over 180f means risk of damaging magnets over time.

Gentlemen may I know why you blow on fire instead of sucking or depriving it of oxygen.... seriously I run all my fans in exhaust fashion. Heat rises... you want to remove it not blow 101 degrees ambient on it. Also, you need a heat sink that touches every inch of the motor if possible and fins at least half inch with a fan sucking heat away and out somewhere there needs to be flow. IMHO
