Tested: 1 year review, Cannondale Scalpel Si Carbon 3 bike check

Спорт

After one year with the 2017 Cannondale Scalpel Si Carbon 3 I've put together this in-depth review. I've covered ride characteristics and it's strengths along with it's weaknesses. I've raced this Scalpel Si in XCO and marathon events and ridden it some full on gravity trails at places like Derby in Tasmania. After 1,200kms on this bike I feel like I know it pretty well. I hope you get something out of this review!

    Thanks for this practical review. I just now am incorporating mountain biking into my riding to supplement my road riding. I just turned 60 and ride 100-150 miles per week pretty hard. I have some local trails nearby that I ride with an experienced rider I can't keep up with using my entry level trek 3700 mob predictably. Hate to say it did a really bad endo and learned a painful lesson descending. My LBS is great and I trust him sas he's a highly accomplished rider and mechanic who grew up on the trails I ride and will be riding. His specialty is cross country. I just started talking to him about a new mob for Springtime with the HABIT 3 and he advised a scapula for something lighter on these trails to have more fun. That's where we left off as I'm researching this whole thing deeper now. I just need to climb, descend and handle moderate obstacles like tree roots, some tree limbs across the trails and some minor rock piles. You hit on. the choices in the video as whether to go with the scapula is, se or a HABIT. Thinking it comes down to the travel needs- small, medium or large in that order and whether the lefty is a costly maintenance item necessary or not. Also whether the se would leave me disappointed saying- crap why didn't I get the Lefty? I won't be doing any jumping, just in creasing my speed as I get more skills. Long question, but your review really covers this situation... what do you think? Jim

    Sounds like you need a smaller travel bike. I’d go for the scalpel si or se. They’ll climb a lot better than the habit. The lefty is a great fork and in my opinion if you stay on top of maintenance it’s as good, if not better than its competitors in the performance fork space

    @@longandwinding Thanks. That backs up the recommendation from LBS pro. The next detail will be whether a scapel 4 or 5 which will be carbon or aluminum and component level or a se vs si. Trails freezing thawing and muddy. here in ny so only a few opportunities to mtb next couple of months. Thanks again.

    Play at the backend could be worse case than just worn out bearings. In my case bearings were ok but I had to replace carbon link, thanks god it was covered by warranty. After some research I came to conclusion that there are two design/manufacture flaws one may experience with scalpel si frame: play/wear at the carbon link, play/crack at the main pivot. I have a friend who's frame cracked at the main pivot.

    What dropper post have you installed? I have the exact model but am not sure yet. Thinking of the PNW Loam 31.6 170mm. Also, I dont see any open/external openings to run an internal cable. Where is the dang thing? lol Thanks for this in-depth review, btw. Helps me get to know my bike better.

    Hey Wyatt, I never ran a dropper on this bike, but I’m pretty sure there is the capability to route one internally

    @@longandwinding Thanks for responding. I’m pretty good at research and have yet to find a single person running an internal dropper on this year/model. The only exit point for a cable that I can find would exist is used by the RockShox fork lockout lever cable. All the pros I’ve found riding this bike don’t run a dropper as I’m assuming due to the additional weight and their skill level.

    @@longandwinding Actally after removing the seat post all together and looking down into the drains there’s a “dummy” cable sheathing already installed. I should have counted the cables going to the bar controls. If anyone else is curious, after measuring, size medium max insertion is 240mm from the top of the seat post collar.

    Why does it only have one suspension fork. Is it to save weight

  • @longandwinding

    @longandwinding

    4 жыл бұрын

    It saves weight, is stiffer and the fork works better under braking load

    @@longandwinding The bikeradar long term review bike, same year as this but team spec, had the frame crack and be replaced. Symptom was loose backend. Several people in the comments say they have had the same. You should probably consider checking your frame near bottom bracket pivot. Hope it's nothing, though! kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKGbxqucfq-pZco.html
