"This" elements in the gearbox called "dogs". It can be repaired, but you need to use a precision grinder and grind at the right angle - 3-5° as I well remember.

Does it have a detent spring for gear position? On BSA singles that can cause a jump out of gear. If you fixed clutch is the shaft loose moving gears out of sync?
