A "constant state of usefulness" for vehicles using FSD is great and super efficient until it's time to evacuate for a hurricane. Then there aren't enough vehicles to get everyone out and people die. And if you're counting on mass transit to save the day, think back to the subway systems during covid and the unused school buses during Hurricane Katrina. The first big disaster will cause people to scream, "The government should DO SOMETHING about this!"

If you have ever used a cordless power drill you know you would never switch to a gas and oil powered drill. It’s really that simple. Electric vehicles just had to become functional and practical enough. And they (at least Tesla vehicles) have.

Also, it is a fairy tale that oil is from dinosaurs. Oil is made from decaying organic matter not from only dinosaurs. So there are pockets of oil that have recently been found (which are some of the biggest finds ever) and oil fields yet to be discovered. I believe in the both at the same time method. Yanking the cord at once will destroy the world economy since it is all dependent and runs on oil. There will be a massive world wide depression if you yank all the oil out at once. Which is not good for anyone. Keep producing oil while working on all alternatives. For me electric vehicles have a lot of downside as well since the batteries are made of very toxic metals. Hydrogen fuel cell cars were used in California for over a decade without problems and there only out put is water out of the tailpipe. However I am not against electric cars just everyone calling them the savior when they are obviously not.

Autonomous driving will not result in cars being used 24 or even 22 hours per day. Very few cars are needed between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and many cars are needed during the typical rush hours. Since cars will be able to cross intersections just sometimes slowing down to allow vehicles that approached the crossing road a split second before yours. All these will shorten your driving time significantly allowing even less cars since one will stay in the road system less time.

I’m surprised autonomy doesn’t get more air time. For instance, how often does SUV get dirt on tyres, need traction on all wheels. We don’t need individually owned recreational, off-road vehicles - just a rental fleet, and probably stored closer to where they’ll be driven. This way they don’t need to be capable of 120 mph & 2 sec 0-60mph. Our culture needs a rethink, a re-set.

Another way to solve electric long distance travel with trucks and cars, is install charging coils in the center of each lane of the interstate highway system. Install solar panels, wind turbines, or small scale Thorium nuclear reactors along the interstate to power the charging coils. Electric vehicles can have smaller battery packs and charge on the fly. Cars entering the interstate highway have to have a credit card registered to pay for charging on the fly. It can work by cameras taking pictures of the license plates like the toll systems in Florida. The solar panels and wind turbines need the storage batteries to power the charging coils at night or when the wind does not blow. This way a car or truck can go from the east coast to the west coast without stopping to charge the vehicle.

I dont know about you but I cant drive more than 150 miles without a bathroom break, so driving non stop across the USA is a little irrelevant and unnecessary. Whilst I stop for my bathroom break, a snack etc my Tesla can add 175 miles of range in 10-12 minutes, enough to get me to my next bathroom break.

To change to solar energy now would require massive amounts of space to build a lot of solar farms. Are people not complaining we are out of space now?

The biggest issue with having YOUR car used by OTHER people, does not sound like a plan that anyone would go for. Personal ownership of property is something you cannot overlook. Would you want the car you are paying good money for that you are earning and the car just drives away on its own to take others to and from places. What about damages to your vehicle? Who would pay for that. Big whole in this theory.

At some point landlords (or HOAs) are going to respond to demand from the increasing number of EV-owning tenants (or condo owners) to put in Level 2 charging stations (which don't cost all that much to install, generally less one month's rent - one time). If you park on the street, municipal governments need to respond to EV-owning residents.

Your math does not account for "Rush Hour" work schedules when most of the people travel to and from work at the same time. Also private cars are not a great share use case, only Hertz or Uber type companies where the owners are set up to both clean and recharge between rides, and having a single vehicle damaged can be managed.

A nuclear power plant alongside a coal plant and a chemical plant can take the CO2 from the air and the flue gases from the coal plant and via a number of chemical processes, create various hydrocarbons to make plastics, fibers, and liquids. No reason you cannot create gasoline, Diesel fuel, and lube oils. See Fischer-Tropsch process.

By law the batteries have an eight year 100,000 mile warranty. Some degradation is allowed but most owners say the batteries hold up quite well and give service far beyond the warranty.

And flying cars are coming soon...🤷‍♂😳🤣 P.S. It's March and it's snowing at my Great Lakes home...FYI: NO SUNSHINE 🤦‍♂🙄😉

Robotaxi is for uber, it is not for private share unless people know each others like a family or friends who share a car.

First we need battery tech (aluminum?) that is less destructive for the environment, and less carbon intensive. Then we need to switch the power grid to nuclear (be it fission or fusion), and add a lot of production of power. Then we can talk about EV only -.- Otherwise it's just a pipe dream, a dangerous one at that.

I understand the rationale of all vehicles as taxi. I completely think its a horrible idea to expect people will want to pay out their hard-earned income to a vehicle that other people damage from use. Reality is people ruin the vehicles they rent. Without the owner in the vehicle during the rented ride, cars will get vandalized, seats torn or written on with ink, etc. additionally, I enjoy driving my car and don’t want sticky ice cream hands and muddy dog claws all over the inside. So here’s an incentive to speed transition to EV. Take gasoline trade-in to offset the cost of going electric. Recycle the trade in rather than resell it.

1) stationary batteries are needed asap. 2) unused, parked, cars should be able to act as stationary batteries, while powerwalls remain unavailable. 3) electric vans, with FSD (!) are important. 4) subsidies on diesel & petrol must go away NOW! 5) taxation on aviation. 6) make cargo shipping green.

This Tesla Taxi system with owner vehicles is I think being over estimated as I would not ever let my vehicle pick up complete strangers, as I really love my Tesla, so why would I want to expose it to strangers without me even in it???

The problem is that to change the long term economics of a vehicle, you have to change the mind set of people. For one, I'm not going to have my only method of transport running around acting as a taxi where any John Doe can damage or steal it.

This is that part i dont see alot of people talking about ... getting to a point of no more personal vehicles is going to be a feat to overcome. Getting the everyday person to switch from having a fully personal car to ride sharing everywhere is going to be hard

We will never run out of oil because if we burn it all the Earth will fry before we can finish it.

What will Tesla’s valuation be in 2030 if only 1/2 of what they are trying to do, comes true? Cars, solar, battery energy storage, heat pumps, Optimus, FSD and general AI. It’s only 7 years away and new car sales are on track to be 50% by the end of 2025. The Two new Tesla plants (Mexico and Indonesia) will get us to the the 2025/50% mark. There will be autonomous car taxi fleets but most people won’t put their car into that. It will be large companies that run those fleets and many people will use those services rather than own cars.

I can see a person subscribing to a automated car thru a car rental company like a taxi company because people don´t like strangers riding in their car.

Quite ambitious and hopeful. I'm just trying to figure out what sector of this chain to go into, in order to be part of this plan. Profitable and noble plan. Even just buying and patronizing the products is playing a good part, I just to do want more. Whole new industries springing out here. Good presentation.

Oil comes from plants(and preexisting bacteria) mostly. When this planet started, the atmosphere was 30 to 50 percent CO2. Plants got here and over the millenia ate it all and created the 20% oxygen, and made CO2 a trace gas. All the plants got buried, and became solid and liquid carbon (coal and oil). Plants are in a starvation equilibrium with CO2. Since we started burning it we have bumped it from 0.027% to 0.04%. in that time plant leaf cover has expanded 15%.

We were bought up in a car worship culture. I’m one and have had many, many hot rods I built myself. And yes, people will use their phones while the car self drives and occasionally watch the scenery go by.

The idea that the public will share cars does not sound that promising.Musk's idea would be self-driving taxis. The problem is that we would not know what kind of taxi we would get or if one was available. I suppose in densely populated areas that could work. But for example in LA where it is not unusual to drive for half an hour or more to work, a taxi may not be that useful. Taxis would pick up working people at home and drive them to work in town centers. Taxis would then distribute back to homes where the wife does shopping. Later taxis would go back into town to pick up people when they got off work and take them home. And so a taxi in LA would travel about twice the distance as a car owned by someone just to take that person to work.

It would be cheaper and faster when batteries become a bit more energy dense and 3rd party companies start pumping out conversion kits. Plenty of vehicles out there with burnt out engines but everything else in working conditions. Of course, it's illegal in many places.

Not cheaper and not faster. Tesla Shangai produces 3,000 per day. Per DAY. Imagine having kits for thousands of different models of cars, how to fit them. And at the end any other part of the cars will eventually fail first, like brakes, direction, etc, etc.

@@PureAlbania The solution isn't to replace all ICE cars with new EV ones, converting is a good way to reuse existing equipment and since most cars for the past 15 years stick to ever more similar platforms making conversion kits more accessible. Ok, maybe not cheaper and faster but better than having piles of cars at the junkyard because of a bunch of parts that can be bolted out.

Fewer auto accidents = fewer cars required for the global fleet. It also means that many auto body technicians will be out of work.

Every industry dies at some point. If humans always took into account the job market every time a new innovation came along we’d still be using primitive technology.

$7T - the amount we would otherwise spend on replacing ICEVs and ICEV factories - the amount we'd spend on extracting, refining and distributing petroleum - the amount we'd spend on health problems caused by petroleum air pollution. Add it the higher cost of maintaining ICEVs. Switching to EVs is simply an excellent investment in lower future costs. And I included nothing to cover the cost of extreme climate change.

@@tixximmi1 It is very unlikely that the vast majority of EV and grid storage batteries will use any cobalt or nickle. Right now the winning chemistry is lithium iron phosphate (LFP) due to low material cost, non-flammability, and very long cycle life. More exotic chemistries will be limited to things like airplanes and performance cars where energy stored per weight/volume is an issue. Lithium mining is a non-problem. Much simply involves pumping lithium brine out of wells. Drill a hole, pump it out. And remember, we only have to mine the lithium, iron, and phosphate once. They are not consumed like petroleum and coal. Mine and refine them once and the recover/reuse them over and over and over. Redwood Materials is already recovering 95% of materials from used lithium batteries. The closer that gets pushed to 100%, the less future mining will be needed. It's not clear but it may be the case that we will be able to use sodium in place of lithium and the ocean is full of sodium.

No. Feet are personal. Horse is a personal vehicle. Car is a personal vehicle. People will not go for a shared vehicle scheme unless they are forced to do so by people with guns. It is also INCORRECT that oil is a limited resource. It is constantly renewing via seasonal vegetation cycles and etc., naturally. And it is enough for humanity for as far forward into the future as is our maximum potential population. So while it _might be_ a good idea to go EV for some of us, don't expect it to meet the envisioned dream this video suggests.

Several inaccuracies, but good video. There are approximately 2 billion internal combustion engines in the world but not 2 billion vehicles. The Musk numbers are good estimates of what exists today. Fixed motors and ship motors and such account for something like 600 million of the 2 billion. And, of course, all self driving cars would not come close averaging 22 hours a day of use. Most cars would sit idle during the night. Yes, a lot of merchandise deliveries would be made at night but maximum capacity usage would only be for a few hours around morning and evening rush hours. Finally, it is dumb to reduce stock holdings more and more as stocks fall in value. The further down they go, the more aggressive the buyers should become. True, the big houses are recommending lower allocations to stocks, but the big houses work for the benefit of billionaires, not for the benefit of retail investors.

Think also about how much damage to the earth battery's production and recycling does for a now. How much fossil fuel needs to get burned to produce the electric energy? Unless there will be found another way of doing it...

Robo-taxies are not going to follow the night&day cycle around the globe. There is variance in demand during the day, during the week, during holidays, in summer and winter, in cities, in the countryside. To scale down the average usage period of a car to 20 hours of uptime per day for a robo-taxi is a waste of time. Future structures of automated transport have to grow as the transition is steadily happening.

The reason we all have cars, is because the people selling fuel wanted it to happen. Some of your words are equally confused. We just don’t know which ones. AI may have killed us long before this vision can be realized.

The problem with the robotaxi concept may prove to be the 'taxi' part, not the 'robo' part. Will people fully or mostly transition to using taxis? One thing I'm pretty sure of is that the sales pitch Elon makes about your EV being worth six figures once it is autonomous is 90% bunk. Look into the Turo experiences Tesla owners are having right now: 90% of their renters are somewhere between good and excellent. The 10% are a nightmare - something anyone who has tried being a small-time landlord would have predicted. Unless you want to make renting out your EV a full time thing, you are going to tire of having strangers trash your car - and chasing them down to hold them responsible will be a time-consuming, frustrating experience. A taxi business based on autonomous EVs may work out great, but most people aren't going to want to run taxi businesses. So the question is, what percentage of current private transportation will move to taxis?

I agree, all wonderful in theory but in reality, it's a pipe dream - or if we become like Klaus, you will own nothing and love it / eat your bugs now. Looking at history I don't see this working as the working class are not allowed to make money.

As much as I love electric vehicles I have to also point out that we wouldnt need such enourmous investments into making more cars if ours cities werent car dependant sprawls. But car manufacturers would find a way to make that "not safe"

From what I observe, Elon is not rigid. He is all go for innovation and new technology for the benefit of humanity and sustainability. Unfortunately, this video misrepresents Elon's goal. Elon is all about transition to sustainability, but for longevity, we need fusion, more efficient state batteries, and other technologies. But somehow this video is antagonistic toward these ESSENTIAL technologies. Please don't spread this mindset.
