Tesla Model Y Road Trip 1,000 Miles to Florida May 2022

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After moving to Florida, we had to leave our Tesla Model Y in Indiana and come back to get it at some point. I left the roof rack on the car and filled the Tesla with a number of loose items that we didn't load into the truck.
After about 2 weeks, I was finally able to get a last minute flight to Indiana to pick up the Model Y and drive it down to Florida. My dad was kind enough to drive the Tesla to the airport parking garage, where they plugged it in and I arrived to a nearly fully charged Tesla.
This was last minute and meant that I was in Indy late at night. It was 1,000 miles to get to the rental house in central Florida, which means a number of stops along the way. I have traveled this route many times, but have never done a long trip with the roof rack on top of the car.
Overall, the Tesla Model Y performed flawlessly as usual, and the range hit by having the roof rack was slightly less than expected. At an average under 370 wh/mi, while doing 80 MPH for most of the trip, this was another successful trip.

I used to stop in Cordele all the time for my trips from Orlando up to the Atlanta metro area - but since they added Fort Valley (Buc-ees!) and several other V3 stops nearby, the Cordele stop is less common - especially since it is a solid mile off the highway. That grocery store does have bathrooms and it is nice to grab some fruit to eat while waiting on charging. I have also tried getting service at that Sonic - but not the best experience last time. I actually really like that Jasper charging location - V3, right off the highway, snacks, bathrooms, fast food (Wendy's), and charging stalls away from everything else (low risk of ICE-ing). Only catch is that the Tesla nav wants to route you through town for some reason (perhaps just me) - weird. I try to avoid Ocala if I can. Charging a bit longer in Jasper to make it to the Service Plaza is normally how I do it. Tesla nav can be a little conservative sometimes and insist in stopping earlier - sometimes I have to manually reset the trip midway in the drive for Tesla to calibrate for the longer leg. I wish this was more configurable.

Does the hitch mount effect backing up to tesla chargers at all? Serious question. We take delivery of our MY sometime in February and we're considered a hitch mount, but weren't sure if that complicates things for charging at all. The hitch mount would be preferred as our other vehicle, a Toyota highlander, would also see the hitch mount used at times and that car is definitely a bit too tall to access the cargo on top. It would also eliminate having to buy roof racks for either vehicle!

Almost all EVs have a "charge curve" where the battery charges more slowly the closer to full it gets. So, simply put, if you have to add 100kWh to the car battery during a very long road trip, you can do it in one of three ways (efficiency in this is related to time spent charging): Least efficient: Stop when the battery is half-full and top it off to 100%. You basically spend all of your time at the slow end of the charge curve. Not very efficient: Stop when the battery is mostly empty and top it off to 100%. You spend a lot of time at the slow end of the charge curve. Reasonably efficient: Stop when the battery is mostly empty and charge it to 80%. Most efficient: Stop when the battery is mostly empty and charge it *just enough* to make it to the next convenient charging station. Note: If your Supercharger stops are way off the highway, making charging stops frequently can become less efficient due to the time spent getting to the station. So the best trip plans involve balancing the number of stops (more = more time spent at higher charge rates, fewer = less time spent getting to stations and hooking up to them). Of course, if you are stopping for lunch halfway and have an hour or more to kill, then stopping in the middle and charging empty-to-full becomes optimal again. Always think of ways to make your charging time be time you are also spending doing something else, like bathroom breaks, snacks, walks, and meals.

  • @acolon8999

I drive from Connecticut to Florida usually twice a year in my Model Y. Getting to the Supercharger in the single digits and unplugging at around 70% reduces the total time for the trip. Unless you are having a meal at a restaurant whit waiting, then let it charge until you are finished with your meal. Also make sure that when driving to a supercharger the vehicle is navigating to it because it will precondition the battery which improves the charging speed drastically specially when the temperature is low.

I can’t judge the size, but it looks like it would fit if you slide it in backwards. And if your trunk was full, maybe throw some of those items in the box to save some space. I wonder how much faster and cheaper the trip would have been.

I don't worry at all about how far I can go on a charge. I only need enough range to get to the next Supercharger and the car worries about which one that will be. For local trips I have my Chevy Bolt (which, by the way, I HIGHLY recommend as a commuter - it's probably the best value-for-dollar in reasonably long range EVs out there, but is greatly hampered by very slow DCFC - it is capable of doing road trips if you are very patient - I've done it before and it's "okay").
