Tesla Model X: What I Learned After 6 Months of Ownership | Review & Impressions

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We took delivery of our 2023 Tesla Model X Refresh 6 months ago now. Although it seems that time has flown by, we have put nearly 10k miles on the Model X, and have learned a lot about the car. There are many things to love about the refresh Model X, but there are also some things that could be better.
After 6 months and 9k miles, I have had a chance to calculate our total cost of ownership of our Model X. I have taken this information and compared it to a similar ICE vehicle, in this case, an Audi Q7. I have to estimate costs to the best of my ability as I dont actually have to pay for supercharging due to referral miles awarded over the years. After comparing the 2, there is nearly $2k in savings just in electricity vs gas.
On the other hand, our Model X was delivered after nearly $20k in price reductions. Unfortunately the Model X has come down another $20k since then and now qualifies for the EV tax credit. This additional $7,500 is only available for the 5 passenger Model X with no additional options. That said, you are now able to select any color you like for no additional cost. So although my configuration would not qualify for the EV Tax Credit, it certainly has an impact on the used car values for all Model X's.
The highlights of the Model X include a plush ride, fast acceleration, reasonably efficient in comparison to the Model Y, impressively fast charging, HW4 upgrades, premium soft touch materials with a better build quality than before and great storage and passenger space.
On the flip side, the car is starting to present some rattles and squeaks, service appointments are about 1 month out to fix issues, depreciation is massive, despite now coming standard with a wheel the turn signal and horn are still in inconvenient locations, the falcon doors have already had some issues and the Model X as a whole is very expensive.
No car is going to be perfect, and when you step into the limited world of EV's, there are sometimes even more compromises. That said, assuming the Model X is in budget, this car is amazing. It is super fast and comes with Tesla's untouchable Supercharging network. The overall comfort and charging speed really are the highlights, and in an electric car, those are 2 very important things.
In the end, its bigger, more comfortable, faster, better charging smoother riding SUV. It does come at a larger price tag, and will come with more issues in reliability, but can offer an amazing driving experience. It will be hard to overcome the value and reliability of the Model Y, so if you can afford it, it may be worth seriously considering to enjoy the various features exclusive to the Model X.

Our 2019 100D (Pre Raven) has been amazing for past 4 yrs, put 50k on it. Just needed a 12V after 44months (warranty) and tires around 45k, otherwise has been SOLID! Now just need to sell it. Squeezed in a $79,990 “Tax Edition” Model X right before end of 2023. So far the 2023 has been awesome, none of the issues you described. Great video!

I traded my X to take advantage of transferring FSD to the new car. Love the new X! It Supercharges unbelievably fast! Just finished a 2000 mile road trip, and it worked great! Pro tip: when I traded, I configured my new X, got a price, but then checked to see if there were any “inventory” cars available. And there was! I was able to find one with EXACTLY the configuration I wanted (color, wheels, 5 seats, round steering wheel) for $10,000 less than ordering one, plus it was available immediately!

I really appreciate your videos! The camera work and narration are among the best of these types of channels. With the huge price drop, I have ordered a Model X. I've had a M3 and MY (my current car). Each has had a few minor issues. However, they have never compromised the safety of the car or left me stranded. I've had that experience with new gas powered vehicles! I only would consider a Tesla because of the superior charging experience and the incredible software. I am renting FSD. While expensive, I enjoy the heck out of using it everywhere. Keep up the great work!

Great video. The MX is tempting since the price reduction. My MS driver seat also used to squeak. I bought Lithium Grease off Amzn, removed the head rest, and greased up the back plate all around. Hasn't squeaked since. Also the seat belt latch can rub on the seat, you can put foam or grease between the latch and seat to solve that issue.

I have a 2018 Model X with currently 222,000 relatively problem free miles. I have the 22in wheels, but my tires only had to be replaced at around 70k miles. Never had issues with the Falcon doors. At 190k I had to replace bushings on the front driver side suspension. That's about it. Unfortunately, while on the freeway, a truck's wheel came off and caused a fair amount of damage. Due to the high mileage, my insurance declared the car totalled. I'll be getting another Model x, hopefully that lasts over 200 thousand miles as well. Model x is well worth the money for performance and flexing 😁

We sold our 2017 Model X 100D last year… absolutely loved that car. Bought a Model Y Performance due to the prices of a new Model X. However, while we love the Model Y and it is the best in its segment in terms of price, space and overall package, it is a big downgrade if you have gotten used to all the extras you get in a Model X. Miss the screen in front of the driver, miss the bigger seats, miss the falcon doors (amazing in tight parking spaces with kids or stuff in the back), miss the regular electric doors in the front (I still put my foot on the brake a year later expecting my door to close 😢), and we miss the extra space. We might have to save up for a new Model X in a couple of years, nothing in the electric market beats the overall package you get for that price imo.

May I ask why you sold it? I’m looking around at used 2016-18 Model X’s since the price gap for newer ones are too much. Should I go ahead and buy one? I currently have a Mazda CX9. The falcon doors and space is what is attracting me but I heard Teslas battery doesn’t do well in the winter. Just scared of going away from gas.

We have a 2022 Model X Plaid and have a little over 29k miles on it (Took delivery on September of 2022). Home is off grid (100% solar) we have saved literally thousands on gas. So far after 1.5 years of ownership we have saved tons of cash in comparison. Have had Tesla EVs for 5 years and have a total savings of over $35k in saving for gas between the two (based on how much we drive it). Fortunately, have not had any issues with any of the teslas in the past 5 years and battery degradation has been miraculously 0 for both cars... Model 3 had some paint issues (Which tesla fixed), Y was perfect (no issues at all) and the Model X we had was just a falcon wing door alignment but that's it. Most maintenance we have had so far has just been Tires.

A friend bought the MX soon after its first version was released and he still enjoys it. I don't know his repair experience but those early ones may have had more than today's issues. I decided on the MY and received it in March 2022 and it has performed very well. With the all season Michelin tires, it has handled Colorado winters, torrential rain, high winds and summer heat absolutely flawlessly. I don't need the extra room in the MX and am also glad I skipped the falcon doors for their complexity. I would not choose the MX even with today's HW4 as I still don't need those extra features. The cost is still not worth the issues to my mind so overall, if I were to trade in the MY, I would choose the refreshed MY once it is released especially with HW4 once it has matured a couple years.

I rented a model X plaid on turo for a road trip. I loved the experience however hearing the falcon wing doors squeaking and rattling every time you go over a bump seems like a big miss. And the driver display would randomly just shut off for no reason and there was nothing you could do to get it back on other than hope. At these price points they need to sort these things out.

My 2021 Model 3 LR had both its front seats squeaked horribly. The passenger one ended up being replaced as it was broken from the factory and the drivers seat was fixed in service appointments, but it took 3 appointments to get fixed. Nothing is more frustrating than a squeaky seat!

I just love driving our MXP. Drove SF to LA twice and still want to drive it 😅. Bought ours same time between price drops but with 6 seats for $3500 more got the Plaid. Love the yoke because you can hang your hands on it. You have to practice using turn signals. We upgraded from 2018 M3 because it’s noisy and the X feels twice as good. Falcon doors are awesome just needs coordinated announces opening and closing. We keep cars over 100k and way after warranty so fyi we found out one headlight is $2400 😳. No other issues except range is 70% but charging is pleasant. Looking into rear camber arms.

I have a Might as well, like the rest of the world I’m waiting on the cybertruck. The X vs. Y is easy. If you can easily afford to have so much money tied up buy the X. A selling point for me is the speedometer. The removal of the signal stalks ( and other buttons we are all used to) represents a no go, as much as the yolk did. Can only imagine the time Hertz has spent teaching people to operate these cars just to get them out of the lot. Sure I can learn, and I may be able to teach my wife, but as a senior, .... why? Do not have the interest, spent all my energy over the years figuring out DOS and dip switch settings and generations of printer and video and phone charging cables. Progress I had no choice but to follow. But, I can still get an EV I can get into that have the controls that have worked well for many decades (while trying to remember not to put gas in it). Difference for the sake of being different is a sales gimmick that probably best works on the young. Big Tesla fan for all the other reasons though.

Great video. So far (fingers crossed) I have not had the squeaks and rattles you mentioned. Many of the panels are not aligned properly, but that doesn't bother me. At the tail end of my free FSD it was finally enabled. After several hair-raising mishaps, I don't trust it and won't bother with it until the software for Hardware 4 catches up with Hardware 3. The noise deadening feature makes it's own noises. And I was only slightly bummed that I paid more for it than current buyers. I have had the same experience on buying and selling houses. I love the car. I wouldn't go back to the bumpy Model Y or Model 3. I am enjoying the free supercharging I get for three years. And I also really like the extra features you mentioned. I’ve owned a Model S (leased) which I gave back for a Model X (pre-Raven) in 2018. I love my Tesla, but I wouldn’t do the Model X again simply because of the gull wing doors. They are cool and they get attention, but they are also a real pain. I’ve lived in Tampa, Orlando, and Nashville and while I’m not comparing Apples to Apples the Orlando Service Center is hands down the worst service center I’ve been to from a customer perspective. I’ve had a lot of issues with my Model X from delivery paint issues to wrong configuration. I’ve been locked out of the vehicle twice because the 12 v battery died with no warning. I had the HV battery fail and needed replacement in the middle of the pandemic which took 3 months. It also took more effort than it should have to get Tesla to make it right. All that said though I’d still pick a Tesla every day of the week. The service side needs work, but in some centers you would never know this is an issue such as Nashville (at least in my experience). If you are in Orlando it is a huge issue. They can fix those things though and I view them as a temporary inconvenience. I do worry about all these companies adopting the Tesla chargers and Superchargers getting congested, but that really doesn’t affect me too much since 90% of my charging is at home. But as I said, I can’t imagine my next car not being a Tesla.

But if you would like to buy a car in this area, you can only take the X or the new Q8 55. I chose the X because of the price drop, in the other situation I would bought the Q8. Possible for the future a used one could be a solution. If you would like to go really cheap, you need to take a Dacia. In Germany under 6000€ (ModelX 100T€, Q8 80T€ plus options around 100T€ and more). Smal car without anything and low fuel consumption.

Another rather simple request is Tesla do not update the app so the original gps memorization of the pot holes can continue which is a great feature but they removed it, another issue is the AC turns on both front and back at once and most of the time this ginormous car has no body at the back this can really increase the range if both the front and back don't turn on at once, I really recommend putting multiple charging ports on this big car for convenience of the driver, also for 90k I really expected a premium charger with cable management robotics but nothing like that which doesn't take away from the supercharger network which is fantastic but at home I'm struggling with a cord that's pretty unfuturistic for such a futuristic car, the car just stops in middle of the road dead if you accidentally press over the air updates that is very dangerous Tesla can just call me and I can draw them a wireless charger circuit it's very easy to do and it will eliminate all the cords etc the future is certainly cooler than we expect if the voice ofncustomer is heard

I just ordered a Tesla Model X (11/10/23). I’m concerned about the car after watching your video today. Can you explain why you accepted the delivery of your car with paint issues? You can’t fix that correctly, like you said, unless, you re-paint the whole vehicle. I would be horrified if there is something in the fine print that allows Tesla to deliver cars in this condition. If I were to get your car, in that condition, I would have tried to reject the car and wait for a new one. Why did you accept this? There is no way to fix it later. Please explain to me why you did this. Honestly, like your headline says. Thanks for your video thumbs 👍

Wow, that consumption is high. I have a 2022 Model X Plaid and I average 271 wh/mile over 22k miles and that includes over 20 drag strip 9 second runs.

yea, our cars pretty much live on the highway though. My average speed is probably right at the top end of the cars out there for each of them.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy I drive a lot early morning (probably 70% of my miles) and I just run the fan, not the AC. That saves a lot of electrons.. My commute usually averages 240 wh/mile as traffic is often backed up and without AC, that means I'm running super efficient.. On a 80 mph road trip with AC, I get 350 - 370 wh/mile but I don't do a lot of road trips. I do 1 pedal driving as well. No need to drive aggressive in day to day driving. Aggressive only when I'm racing down in Mexico 😀or at the track.

My seat squeak was solved by raising the seat an inch, I like to keep it at the lowest setting

Do you have to lose an inch of fat to compensate the higher seat position? 😬

Do you think there is going to be a new model X at the end of 2023? I am thinking of getting a model X Plaid with the new price drop but am really troubled with the idea of getting one and after a few months there will be a new model.

More likely to cancel the X and S than come out with a new version. It’s an ever shrinking part of their business and nothing but a hassle for them, especially with the much lower profits with huge price cuts.

They won't have a new model any time soon, they just got the HW4 refresh. The focus will be to start model 3 refresh in the US and ramp up Cyber truck.

no, there's no work being done on a refresh to the X/S right now, and it takes quite some time to do a redesign.

They moved the horn to the center so Tesla is listening. On my 2022 MYP, my lifetime wh/mi after 17+K miles is 276 and that is after 3 long road trips. Anything over 300 is not the norm for me, so 370+ is heart-stopping. But that's a by-product of the 22" tires/wheels. I'd save the $$$ and stick with the base 19s.
