I remember buying The Great Radio Controversy on cassette when it was released. I pulled out and unfolded the sleeve and noticed it had a lot of wording on it for a rock LP. I proceeded to read about a Nikola Tesla and what he had done. I was fascinated. I was in 6th grade and had never heard of that guy, not in school or tv or anywhere. Funny how an underrated rock band taught me a great deal of forgotten (...or erased) history.

When I was in high school, we had a career center for 11th and 12th graders. I followed in my big brother's shoes (as always) and spent my junior year in the electronics course. It was because of this band that I did my final essay on Nikola Tesla and the work he did at Niagara Falls.

If I had a time machine, I'd download this song to it, go back to the day before Tesla died and play it for him. Tell him everything about the future, his legacy today. It so pains me to think he died peniless, probably thinking that Edison and Marconi had won, he would be forgotten. He almost was, but thanks to the band Tesla and others like them, he wasn't. For those that don't know, he unerringly predicted modern smartphones, even the internet in 1926. From Collider Magazine: "When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole. We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do this will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket" Nikola Tesla January 30th, 1926

Nikola Tesla literally should own intellectual copyrights to about 120 different gadgets & items used today in modern life, along with .......OH, GEE, & relay powerlines from transformers to convert A C free electricity to provide the globe free power, & radio-wave & micro wave theory of ANY/ALL kinds, ( 1 of Marconi's attorneys screwed Tesla there), Magnetic coils, and helo craft, they even found basic diagrams in his safe for an "Electric Coil rifle" which is the great GrandFather of the rail gun, (!!!!), etc., the guy was so SOOO far "outside the genius box" he terrified most people, but he was so brilliant, so close to being TOO SMART, 1 of his flaws in life (due to his brilliance) he never saw things thru if he hit a snag, and that cost him dearly in life but it shouldn't have..!!...But trust me boyz and girlz, had Nikola Tesla not been who he was and so devoted to science and invention etc.,& rugged enough to stick with his own belief's while being laughed at or having scumbags like westinghouse spend MILLIONS a yr back then in the 20's trying to smear him, we'd live in a markedly poorer and MUCH more drab world, even today!!Chef David, Monday, 5/29/17, 6:00pm..........................///////////

Simple, as the song says, he was never out to sell. So that's how Thomas Edison and Marconi (don't even know or care what his first name was) destroyed him as they did. They stole his inventions, discredited him. The only thing Edison actually invented was the electric chair, and he did so by hooking up cats and dogs to an electrical grid to try to "prove" why Tesla's AC current invention was too dangerous and we should use his DC current invention instead. Thing is, AC will throw you and you are much more likely to survive touching it (depending on the amperage. I have a friend that stuck a paperclip in an wall socket and it literally flung him across the entire room. He was fine, as the amperage wasn't too high) hence why he had to strap the cats and dogs down (and why someone in a electric chair jerks so much.) DC you don't need to do that as it does the opposite. You can't let go, and you fry. So many don't realize it because of how he 'erased' Tesla, but he failed to convince anyone to use DC instead of AC. What's powering your home right now? Tesla's AC not Edison's DC.

I know Led Zep used odd times, but Tesla was the only 80's rock band I know to use odd meters (other than 3's) with such confidence and groove. Later, Soundgarden (my favorite band) really played with odd times to great effect, but I will always love how Tesla seamlessly throws in odd measures, and Jeff Keith keeps the melody in tact over them. Good stuff! Shows their intelligence.

  • @SaintD382

@@Scott45fl12345 I think he's referring to the "skipped" beat in the pre-chorus of the song ("Man outta time, man outta time"). If you count the beats in that part, there are four in the first measure, but only _three_ in the second measure. They omit (or "skip") the last beat of that measure, effectively changing the time signature from 4/4 (four beats per measure) to 3/4 (three beats per measure) for a brief moment. The Beatles experimented with this too, and Rush did it on several songs. Queensryche too, and Dream Theater.

@@Scott45fl12345 He is talking about the musical structure of the song. As to saying music, for the most part, is on a rhythmic time scale .... (1 -anda 2 -anda 3 -anda -4.)..the structure of the song...as he is making a reference to the "odd" time signature's of the song. for the most part, your everyday song is in counts of 4.

Like a lot of others, I really got into the band Tesla in '87....Modern Day Cowboy was the first song I liked. Then I saw them on tour with Def Leppard - Awesome Show! These guys kicked Ass! I love every song they made on their first 3 albums. Any of you that's interested, should watch the PBS documentary on Nikola Tesla "Master of Lightning".....The man was a Genius. He invented MANY of the things we take for granted today, and most people don't even know his Name.... Inventor of the Radio, AC motors and electrical system, X-ray, fluorescent lights and the CFL bulbs they make us use now!....And - WIRELESS technology (remote control devices which led to cell phones, etc...and Tesla claimed that wireless Power was possible).....plus many other things and rumors that the gov't shut him down, his later ideas/inventions would've made power, radio and telephone available everywhere and Very, very cheap! 4:55 for a partial list of Nikola Tesla's contributions to the Modern World. Tesla (the band) 1st album was released almost 30 years ago (1986...whoa I'm old), nobody was talking about Nikola Tesla the Inventor and this Band was - On the literal end, it was/is Knowledge vs Education - All the good info isn't in school textbooks. How many bands (Rush comes to mind) inspire a kid to go to a Library? This band. Read "Man out of Time" by Margaret Chaney. Get into Tesla's albums (the first 3 especially) and Nikola and prepare to have your Mind and Body Rocked!!!!
