Great video Steve - lots of info. Just bought a 68 MX (first EV) and getting CCS fitted at Newcastle Service Centre on Friday, £200. Main reason is to give more charging options and 'future proofing' in case Tesla do decide to install V3 Super Charging in rural Northumberland!😂

Nice one Steve, very funny. Your a super chilled dude, the problems with the chargers and the reserved £67 every time I connected would have made me explode like a small atomic weapon. I need that stuff your taking for your throat. I’ve just got the date for the delivery of the Tesla 3, I’m excited but my pea like brain is pulsing with the complexity and apps you need to get chargers in play. I wish the muppets that provide these chargers would talk to each other rather than think ‘let’s be clever and do it our way’

Really nice video and useful! I got my first electric car (a Tesla model S) 3 days ago. It's a p85d 2015, i am thinking about doing the CCS adapter upgrade myself. This maybe a stupid question but, can you still charge with the type 2 socket att v2 supercharges like before you did the upgrade? Sorry for any typos, i am from Sweden so English is not my native language.

The V3 version can give models 3 charging speeds up to 250 kw an hour, the retrofitted old ones can not. The old V1 and V2 chargers work in pairs and share a certain power. Thats why you dont park on 2b when 2a is taken and so on. From what I have heard the V3 give max power despite if a car is charging next to your mirrors. So with V3 you can park a Model S or X where you want and still get the cars maximum chargespeed eaven if the stall next to you is taken or not, thats if you have the adapter with a compatible car (that you mentioned in the video ). Im sorry for my English! Cheers from Sweden!

New instavolts have chademo as well. Instavolt are great though. Second most dependable network after Tesla's and the only other than Tesla's I approach knowing they almost certainly will work (and installed in pairs too usually so not likely to both be in use) Geniepoint work OK too for me but I use an RFID card (an old Ecotricity one I've linked) but problem is there's usually only a single charger. Same problem as Polar there. Actually even Ecotricity works OK normally for me (Tesla Model 3 performance so CCS) Ionity pricing is a joke.

Anyone else having an issue where i go to a v3 supercharger, no matter what the peak charging rate will never go past 103 KW? and when it does it will go to 103KW for ONE SECOND and then drop back down again, this makes the v3 superchargers the worse ones to go to and makes them quite disappointing because i was hoping to get better speeds if im honest...

Ive been informed that I can use the SuCs for free which is great, but the nearest Type 2s are on the other side of the country 💩, so would be great to know if I can use CCS - Im going to have a proper rummage through the car to see if there is an adaptor.

Genuine disbelief at the cost per kWh. I think I’ve said it before but realistically I don’t see any cost above 25p/kWh being value for money as the average miles/kWh on vehicles currently mean any charge 30p and above you’re getting to the same cost as fuel and EV owners already take the hit on the cars costing more. The other part of your statement Steve regarding electric becoming more in use as we move to more EVs I don’t think should justify electric going up either, more investment in solar and other renewables makes this one of the cheapest fuel sources as tech progresses. Hopefully there will be more standards across providers and the likes going forward but Tesla have really got things nailed on from the start. Good charge network, 24p/kWh and really simple plug and play useage. I hope other manufacturers catch up. Still loving my egolf but when the lease ends it’s a tesla if the other car makers and charge providers haven’t got their shit together.

  • @SteveJulien

You’re right. Tesla charging is by far the easiest of them all by a country mile. It took IONITY about 4 days to remove the £335 hold from my card. Instavolt is a favourite as well, I don’t mind 35p occasionally but you’re right. Tesla at 24p is spot on.

@@SteveJulien not sure if you have them in your area but PodPoint are fantastic too. I’ve never had issue with them in this area. They have rapid chargers at Lidl stores for 23p/kWh. Simple enough to use via app and any Lidl store that can’t take the juice of a rapid charger have free 7kwh points ( not sure anyone spends that long in Lidl though? 🤷🏻‍♂️). I got my EO Mini home charger from EDF. It’s not great but does the job. EDF now provide Pod-Point home chargers and only wish they did them when I got my point installed (or that I did some research before trusting it all through EDF)

There's an argument that part of Tesla's USP is the charge network, so owners of other car manufacturers shouldn't be able to use Tesla's chargers. Equally Ionity is owned by multiple manufacturers offering their customers a discounted rate (28p per kwh instead of 70p for example). Seems fair dos that Tesla owners should pay more to charge on Ionity's chargers. BUT with my etron you can't just be an Audi customer and access the cheaper rate. You gotta subscribe to Aud's e-charging service as well! This is £16 per month for a minimum of 12 months if you want the 28p Ionity rate. Almost £200 per year to access a rate that should come with the car. Then you have the actual charge cost on top of that (£15 or so for my etron 50) each time. The subscription gives you a handy rfid card and a flat 39p DC charge rate at all major charging companies. But it's a bit mad and maddening!!

I think it's not a matter of costs. I think it's a matter of giving the Model 3 more charge points exclusively for them. Tesla think there will be much much more M3 on the road than MS or X so they (M3s) will need much more charge spots. By making this, Tesla drives their clients to the chargers they want you to go giving more chances to charge to their new king of the hill, Model 3. But...who knows... Elon thoughts are sometimes....
