Tesla Battery Removal - How Easy is It ?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Tesla Model 3 battery removal. Removing a Tesla Model 3 battery as part of a bigger project to build an interactive EV training vehicle. This Part Two deals with all the fasteners and components underneath the car. Part One (another video) deals with the fasteners on the topside/inside the vehicle.

    From what I could see there is little protection for the bottom of the battery unit. A small bend or puncture could be the beginning of a future fire.

    if a BEV battery fails it’s normally some electronic part or a fuse or even just the sealing the umbrella valves need service after 8 years. Can also be some few bad cells so you can open the lid with oscillating tool with a special Milwaukee blade. Replace one or two modules and recalibration easy fix. Don’t need to replace whole pack.

    Yes. Each Tesla motor has an electric oil pump that keeps all the bearings and gears in the drive unit lubricated. I’ve heard that the filter should never have to be changed because, unlike a petrol engine, the electric motor doesn’t create any combustion gases to contaminate the oil and filter.

    @@dwnrange7812 My Model 3 has one permanent magnet motor and one induction motor. Both motors have self-contained pressurized oil lubrication systems and each has its own oil filter. The oil on each motor also flows through a heat exchanger that allows the cooling system to remove any excess heat from the motors. These are state of the art motors with the potential to run for 1 million miles without needing any service according to company founder Elon Musk. If you are interested in knowing more there is a KZread channel called Munro Live that disassembled the motors (and the rest of the car too) and explains how they work.

    If you are going to charge your EV inside your garage, then install a smoke alarm over your car that is interconnected to the other smoke alarms in your house. That way, when the battery goes into thermal runaway whilst charging - and don't delude yourself that "that will never happen to me" - at least you will be woken up so you dont burn to death in your sleep. And despite what Musk says, it happens to LFP batteries, too.

    What a disaster! The Tesla originally supposed to be designed for quick battery swapping. Obviously that Idea went away. Years ago I was an engineer working with battery/electric fork lift trucks. They were designed for quick battery swapping. That was the way to keep the trucks in operation. That battery looked very vulnerable to damage and ultimately fire.

    It more interesting how expensive it is to replace the batteries !How many EV buyers can afford a battery replacement if it costs 30000 dollars or more !Replacement could be real if something hit the battery case while driving which has occurred in USA.The repair cost more than buying a new EV car of the same brand eg. Kia ionic 5 .Many EV driver would not be able to buy for a new battery replacement if something like this happens striking the battery case from down under .

    It’s not dead yet but when batteries get to about 80% energy density as oil/gas/diesel then oil will only be for rockets and jet engines. It’s coming slowly but surely. Them carbon nanotube batteries gonna be the end all to ice. People just don’t understand simply plugging in at your home for waaaay cheaper and waking up to a full tank of battery, they can’t comprehend it and until they experience it and how badass a Tesla is, they gonna hate. Haters gonna hate until they see and then they gonna be on the band wagon.

    If anyone was thinking there’s nothing to break on an EV, just study the incredibly complex cooling systems to the battery, motors, inverters, onboard charger, MCU, etc. Leaks on ICE cars are a big concern, and trust me, there’s way more opportunities for leaks on EV’s. Yikes.

  • @hopefwam

    No one thinks that. But certainly there are way less moving parts on an EV. There are over 10k moving parts in ice which will highly likely break or leak and way less on an EV. But for sure something will break but lesser chances.

    @@hopefwam Perfectly agree on that. The main difference is, if for any reasons, the electronics related battery management, or even the battery cooling is involved, it could be catastropic to the wallet. Spills on an ICE vehicle are a bit cheaper to fix, because it mostly does not need a complete replacement of a critical/expensive component. The closest it comes to is the engine and transmission issue, still relatively cheaper to fix, with refurbised parts. Just some 💭

  • @aware2action

    @aware2action

    @@howardj602 I do agree with the average life of an ICE vehicle. But most of these vehicles are used in backup duty, with total mileage around 150K. Whereas, you could put easily 400K miles within 8 yrs on an EV. New batteries cost about 20K, but there should be cheaper options in the refurbished market. Also there is lot less maintenance cost during that time as well. Definitely BEV's can be made cheaper, without all the fluff as some made in China in the low 20Ks.

  • @hvu6037

    @hvu6037

    ICE engines and transmissions are cheaper because they're more numerous now. As more EVs are produced, more components are also manufactured and costs will come down simply due to economies of scales.

    What a dreadful hunk of crappy cheap design. A massive monolithic battery pack is cheaper and easier to build than doing it properly I guess. If the batteries were in at least four individual drop down boxes that were sealed and insulated from each other and no massive openings into the cabin and a proper seperate replaceable impact absorbing armour plate/s protecting them these massive virtue signalling wanker mobiles would be significantly safer and somewhat cheaper to repair.
